Talkin’ NFL Offseason w/ Joe DeLeone

Let's welcome in our guide, Joe De Leon to talk a little NFL free agency, a little bit of the draft as well. Joe covers the NFL draft, college football and the NFL for eight is these sports. I know that you're just as geeked up for March Manus as us really quickly.

1:05Do you have your national champion picked out in your final four? I do. I was just saying to you guys beforehand, I'm going way too chalky because very clearly after last year, I think it's proven that the best teams are just going to keep winning. So I went with Duke. I think if they get healthy, there's a real plausible chance that they do end up going on a run. But as we all know, these college coaches, they'll just tell you what you want to hear that the players are coming back. I'm sure Shired didn't want to affect his seating whatsoever. But I really like Purdue. I really like Iowa State. And I don't know if I'm going to regret it, but I also really like Illinois. I don't trust Florida. The teams they got in the final four right now, but we're going to I'm sure I'm probably going to be wrong on all four of those. And none of this will matter in probably a couple of weeks. Very good. All right. So you you're making bread happy. The other members of our crew of Brandon Combs and Monty, they both have Illinois going down to VCU, which I thought was a little crazy. I at least got him going to the sweet 16 and losing against Houston. But anyway, let's get to some football here, Joe.

2:09What are you making the Baltimore Ravens a week removed from the Max Crosby debacle? They hold on to both their first round draft picks. They signed Trey Hendrickson instead, but did they do enough and they lost their stud center, Tyler Linderbaum lost tight N Isaiah likely, linebacker, Treymont Jones and fullbacker Patrick, a fullback Patrick record. What's the biggest needs now for the Ravens heading into the draft, assuming they don't make another big move here in free agency. And do you think at this very moment with new head coach Jesse mentor at the Ravens of the best team in the AFC North going into next season? Yeah. Well, first of all, I don't I think of the current state of this roster. I don't know if I could confidently say that this is the best team in the AFC North. I think that you mentioned there you're losing Linderbaum. You're plugging in Trey Hendrickson here to replace Max Crosby who you thought you were trading for. I feel like there's a lot of questions that need to be answered and there's a lot of case for there to be growing pains in the first year under Jesse mentor for this team.

3:10Really resetting. I feel like overall, there's a lot of things that need to get leveled out with this current team. Now, the one player that I'm keeping my eye on for them to potentially pick at 14th overall now that they still hold that pick. I wonder if they maybe consider taking a past pressure, but I really like the idea of Kenyans to dig the Oregon tight end is still the board for them to take them lost as they likely. And while I say likely was a solid receiving tight end for them, they can end up upgrading significantly. I think that the priority here is setting up Lamar Jackson to be as successful as possible while their defense underperform because it lacked a lot of depth and it got injured so quickly and a lot of those backups that stepped in didn't really perform at a high level. I think that the biggest key here for next year is trying to find another big playmaker to build a chemistry with Lamar other than that though. I don't think it's a bad premise for them to maybe consider taking a defensive tackle again, especially considering how quickly the group crumbled when it got banged up. Maybe that's Caden McDonald, maybe that's Peter Woods, whatever direction they decide to turn to.

4:14There's a lot of options for them sitting at that 14th overall spot. So deep man, all I can think of is every Jersey on him looks like a shmedium. That dude is just downright ridiculous. Joe, the cover is terribly bare for Malik Willis in the Miami Dolphins right now wide receiver post Jalen Waddle trade to Denver ready to that here in a minute with two first round draft picks for the Miami Dolphins at 11 and 30 overall. It seems inevitable. One will be spent on a pass catcher. Imagine for a second, you're a scout for the organization. What recommendation would you make at number 11 overall? Yeah, I think that they're going to be able to control the board at that slot for where they're picking because I just don't imagine that there's going to be a receiver that goes in the top 10 let alone more than one. If carnal tape theoretically goes in the top 10, it just doesn't seem very plausible that somebody else well, the funny thing too with these receivers in this class.

5:16They got a lot of hype before the combine and seemingly there's something wrong with all three of them that have been in that top 15 discussion that being the Kylie lemon who people are saying is weird and was really weird during the interviews and people were questioning his media availability. That's the knock on him. People were worried about carnal tape speed, which I'm not and then Jordan Tyson's injury history, which should be fine, but still there's a concern there. I think that they can go in any direction. The thing is either of those three receivers, it just depends on if they're able to pick any of those three. What the vision is for this offense going forward. I do think that the most ready to impact and step on the field would be Tate and Tyson to me has the highest upside because of the talent that he brings the table, the overall well rounded is just the injury history, which is naturally scare me. So any of those three players, I think makes the most sense to turn this dolphins team around yet to start doing it brick by brick. Yeah, no doubt about it. It got to get at least some suitable weapons here for Malik Willis Joe. So on the related know with Jalen Wattel now in Denver, your thoughts on his fit with the organization really the makeup of the Broncos overall, the AFC West is arguably the toughest division in the NFL based on the all season moves so far and more to come via the draft.

6:37Do you agree with that sentiment and how do the mile high horses stack up against Kansas City, the L.A. Chargers and Las Vegas? Do you think they're the front runner? Yeah, I think right now that this is the type of move that they needed to make to take themselves over the top and I just I see a lot, a lot of the commentary that they overpaid and they sent a lot of draft capital to go and get Jalen Wattel at the end of the day. Did they send more than just a first run pick? Yes, but to use your first run pick on a big time playmaker that has proven success proven production has been a home run threat, a play style that you don't have in your receiver room. Going with the known commodity is better than taking a swing on a rookie that you don't know is going to pan out or not and a lot of times receivers sometimes take like a year to to like really settle in not every guy is going to be Jamar Chase or Malik neighbors, especially if you're picking at the very end of the first round going and making them move to get a player that you want to have that immediate impact. I think is what was needed for them to really make that jump and I think that ultimately the rest of this draft.

7:47They need to seek out a replacement for John Franklin Myers that's going to be hard because he was one of the best past rushing defensive tackles in the NFL, but there are options for them. I think that if you they look on day two and on day three that you get creative one guy that I like on day three Caleb Proctor the defensive tackle from southeastern Louisiana has got a very similar skill set coming from a small program just like John Franklin Myers did you could end up getting a similar type of a boost to your defense. He's also cohosted the refino and Joe show and the hack city pod. Joe, let me ask you about a team that flew under the radar and free agency the Washington commanders. I love their big additions. Adafee Ohway you know coming off the edge after a great year with the chargers after he was traded from the Ravens they get linebacker Leo Chanel from the chiefs Chica Conquo at tight end.

8:49And I think they they you know really beefed up this defense that was such a big problem for them last year. Again so much is going to depend on Jaden Daniels health. They've got a new offense coordinator and David blow it's kind of like all the magic from a year and a half ago just kind of got wiped out here. I still think there's some more moves for them to be made but overall how would you grade the commanders off season and who do you think they should be targeting with their first round draft pick. Yeah I think that the commanders fall into the bucket of teams that have completely shifted expectations for what they're going to do in the first round and let alone this entire draft. It felt like that they had to just go all out on spending seemingly every single pick on new young defensive talent and I love what they did they had so much money to spend. And they went and got guys that were productive this past year they didn't overspend on them you mentioned Adafee Ohway. I think that Caleb on chase on for the cheap deal that they brought him and on was a smart move knowing what they've got with their interior defensive line group. I think that there is slow progression towards this defense getting back on track after being as abysmal as it was.

9:55What they can do at the seventh overall pick they can go in a million different directions if sunny styles on the board they could take sunny styles. I think that they should still consider if David Bailey or Ruben Bain is still there that it would be worth adding another past russure having three really good past russures is useful especially when your team was as inconsistent defensively as it was last year. But I do feel as though now it's far more in play for them to consider carnal Tate as the young receiver to add to the mix considering this receiver room is quite barren. But I also believe the one guy who if he falls in their lap which seems more and more plausible then taking Jeremiah love would make a lot of sense. They are a team that is trying to continue to ascend the young core and I can't imagine there's a lot of good landing spots for Jeremiah love. But if we're just talking about dynamic duo of two athletes standing next to each other there wouldn't be a better one in the NFL. You've got two four three athletes with Jay Daniels and Jeremiah love you can run option plays and never even have Jay Daniels hold the ball and keep the ball and defenses would still be scared for their lives of what is to come.

11:09There's just so much juice that would come out of that tandem and I think that they should very strongly consider it now that they have duct taped some of their defensive issues go and look at day two for adding other defensive pieces if Jeremiah love is on the board. Take Jeremiah love take yourself over the top become the best offense in the NFL and become unstoppable. Oh man oh that's sexy right there Jeremiah love it had me at that name to say the least all right Joe let's go out west and talk about the San Francisco 49ers they have revamped their receiving core with proven vets Mike Evans my cousin by the way not really. And Christian Kirk as a new weapons there for Brock party also the wide receiver additions and how they fit with this organization also they're drafting at number 27 overall what's the move for San Francisco. Do you think they're going to show up the offensive line that position or go elsewhere. First of all on receivers I Christian Kirk is fine I'm sure that Shanahan will get something out of him more than he was getting out when he was in Houston.

12:18Part of me has this inkling of a belief that Mike Evans is going to be like Julio when he throw on a Titans uniform and it's just going to be like oh yeah this isn't the same this isn't this isn't what it was because when you got these gigantic athletic freaks that we're just dominating everyone with their traits. It feels like the slow regression in athleticism catches up to guys like this and we saw it we started to see it his production has been going down and also his ability to stay healthy. It just I didn't love this move if you get the version of Mike Evans that we know that he is it's a move that takes you obviously over the top. And it's a move that makes your offense a lot more explosive especially at receiver with a known product but the problem with that is that you're a team last year they get banged up across the board constantly and you're adding a guy who's coming off of being unavailable so it just it makes me feel a little iffy I do think. That offense of line is the direction to go to especially with Trent Williams being as old as he is and coming towards the end of his career.

13:24Any direction at the back end of the first round maybe that's Blake Miller from Clemson who could play left tackle maybe it's Max. Yannachore the right tackle from Arizona state who doesn't need to play right away but could slowly work his way in maybe their team that goes a manual pregnant or chase besanthus the two interior offense of I'm in this class that I'm very big fan of. It's just a lot of different guys in the back end of the first round that they could strongly consider but I would imagine. Track Brock party and to have some youth on their offensive line should be one of their biggest priorities. Talking to Joe De Leon here for another two to three minutes or so Joe let's finish with the Minnesota Vikings because it's a big debate on our show here are they a playoff team with Kyler Murray on this roster assuming Kevin O'Connell gives him the starting job coming out of training camp and JJ McCarthy is reduced to the bench and again Minnesota went nine and eight last year with slop QB play Ryan Flores and that defense should once again be able to wreak havoc despite a questionable secondary they've got Jay jettos and Jordan Madison.

14:27This Kyler Murray have the goods still within him I don't think so I think he's the opposite of a leader I think his best days are behind him do you believe in Kyler Murray and as currently constructed are the Vikings apply off team this year. I think in a vacuum Kyler Murray is the type of quarterback that does get this team back on track but to the point that you just brought up what what kind of a leader are you getting out of Kyler Murray how focused is he how intent. How much intent does he have on turning this team into a consistent top tier winner if we get the early career version of Kyler where he was dynamic and explosive and his unique skill set was just impossible to figure out because of how compact and elusive he is if all those things come to fruition I think the Kevin O'Connell is going to have a field day but to this main point if he is drag and ask and he's just not that same level of intentional and detail oriented that premier quarterbacks in the league need to be then this is absolutely going to end up crashing and burning but if there is a coach that I think they can get something out of him it does feel like O'Connell it really does to this point though.

15:36Of what is the path for this team and what are they capable of the fact that they did go nine and eight last year because of how good their defense was it makes me have a lot of faith I think that if they find a young dynamic running back this year in the draft that they could end up really really boosting this offense alongside Kyler Murray I would also add I feel like if Jeremiah love is a player who's maybe sliding a little bit because of New Orleans and Kansas City finding running backs and for agency if he may make it to like pick ten or so is Minnesota a team that considers trading up and adding him to the mix and I think that that a lot of sense considering their limitations offensively last year and move for their future.
