Syrian Colonel Charged with War Crimes in UK Court

0:00On March 10th, a former Syrian colonel named Salem Al-Salem has appeared in a London court facing charges of crimes against humanity. This marks the first prosecution of its kind in England and Wales. The 58-year-old faces three counts of murder as a crime against humanity, three counts of torture, and one count related to murder. These stem from alleged actions during Syria's crackdown on protests in 2011, Al-Salem served as a colonel in Syrian Air Force Intelligence and reportedly led efforts to suppress demonstrations in Jobar, a suburb of Damascus, that violence helped spark the uprising against Bashar al-Assad, which turned into a civil war and ended with Assad's overthrow in 2024. Al-Salem fled to the United Kingdom afterward. In court on Tuesday, he joined via video link due to motor neuron disease, appearing housebound with a breathing tube, the magistrate excused him from stating his name but denied requests to hide his identity, saying opposed no extra risk.

Al-Salem remains on bail under a 24-hour curfew while investigations continue.
