Pre-Planning to Survive an Active Shooter: Four Strategies
When it comes to personal safety, being prepared is crucial. In the unfortunate event of an active shooter situation, having a plan in place can make a significant difference. By focusing on self-awareness, situation awareness, location familiarity, and pre-planning, you can enhance your chances of staying safe. Let's dive into these four strategies:
1. Self Awareness
Where are you physically. If not the exact address, take note to your location, that you are at the corner of A and B. Where should you park before entering the location. Assess activity before you go in, does it look like business as usual.
2. Situation Awareness
Once you enter a location, it's essential to quickly assess the situation. Pay attention to entry points and exit points, as well as any potential hiding spots or barriers that could provide cover. Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings at all times. This heightened situational awareness can help you identify potential threats and take appropriate action.
3. Location Familiarity
Familiarity with the layout of a building can be a valuable asset in an active shooter situation. Take the time to pre-plan and familiarize yourself with the building's layout, including the exits and alternative escape routes. Knowing where to go and how to navigate the space efficiently can save precious seconds and potentially save lives.
4. Pre-Planning
Pre-planning is a proactive approach to personal safety. Consider different scenarios and develop a plan for each one. Identify potential escape routes and safe areas where you can seek shelter. Discuss your plan with others who may be with you, such as family members or colleagues, and establish a communication strategy. By pre-planning, you can act quickly and decisively in a high-stress situation.
Remember, personal safety is a serious matter, and it's important to stay informed and updated on best practices for active shooter situations. Stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and always prioritize your well-being and the well-being of others.
