Survival Medicine Hour: Wound Closure, EMPs, Herbal Teas
About this episode
Joe Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP, aka Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy, discuss various methods of wound closure and when it's acceptable to close and when it's not. Less invasive methods like Steri-Strips and Glues are discussed as important ways to stretch the longevity of more high-tech items like sutures and staples. Also, the electromagnetic pulse caused by a North Korean nuclear weapon exploded high above, say, Kansas, can wreak havoc on the electrical grid and certain electronics, but we've done little as a nation to harden civilian infrastructure against EMP attacks. Find out about what used to be thought as a very low likelihood event, but more possible, it seems, by the day as the sabers keep rattling. Lastly, using all the tools in the medical woodshed includes knowing the herbs in your own backyard that might have medicinal benefits. Dr. Alton thinks that herbal teas will be the easiest way for the medic to take advantage of nature's bounty in a long-term disaster where the medicines have all run out. Here are some of his and Amy's favorite teas (actually more accurately called "herbal infusions").
