2:01But you carry it everywhere you go. Yep. You turn back for it if you've forgotten it. Oh hell yeah. I can't live without my phone. My boarding pass is on there. Every single thing is on there. So as we're raising kids, we, you know, let's keep them off the stuff as long as possible. It's a, and you should. Yeah. No, I absolutely. That's we're in that struggle. Right. Because they will just watch the tablet all the way. Yeah. I can honestly tell you I tried to do something that I thought was about art and music. And I mother bleeped us in a way that I just him. So I just, I'm too stupid for words. By giving them the iPod. The iPod was this thing that I thought I want you to have access to. You'd have access to music. You can play songs when you're at you can play and you can get books that will read to you at night while you're in bed. That's what I thought we were getting this for. And only that.

3:01And I should have known kids will. They game everything. They game every system. That's what they spend their time figuring out. Yeah. How can I make this do more? I'm a kid. And I know my friends are also doing right. So the good news is you're not alone parents trying to keep your kid off the stuff. Yeah. The bad news is it's too late. They're already infected. They got it. A new study out of the University of North Carolina that observed the phone habits of nearly 100 students between the ages of 11 and 18. Of course, all those kids have phones. That's part of the study. But the question was how many of those hundred students went the whole school day without using their phone and the answer is zero percent. Not one student went the day without digging into their phone for one reason or another.

4:03Absolutely not surprising. Students grabbed their phones an average of 64 times during the school day. Oh my gosh. And the average team, you know what though? You do it too and you don't realize it. I do it too. Yep. Sometimes I will tell you I'm doing it because I'm trying to do a story or whatever. But I also at the end of the show find myself like purging the like what we've just done. All right. Now I'm a civilian again. I'm back into it. I'm checking back in on my life. And every meeting that we have with our guy Matt, he goes put your phone down, Ben. It's because I'm now why I have freed myself to dig in. Like I start picking up. What's going on? What's happening now? Right. Let me have to pick up. Yeah, let me see. Let's do it. Yeah. All this stuff. Yes. And so I'm wrong. I'm not saying I deserve that time. But I am saying we all do it. And the kids do it too. 64 times in a school day. That's nothing. That's not that much.

5:03No. That's just all the time. Yeah. I don't know what they expected to find, but that's I'm not surprised at all. I feel lucky that my kids were. When did it come out? Oh, seven or something? And we didn't have the iPhone. Yeah. Yeah. We didn't have iPhones or anything until I don't think I got an iPhone. I had my Blackberry still until you came back. I think maybe. Well, we ended up repping. Yeah. iPhone. Maybe like, oh, nine or something. And got free ones handed to us. So we were, you know, full of them. Diane, yeah. And I also was still on a Blackberry at that point. I loved my Blackberry. I was fine with it. I liked the keyboard. It was great. I miss my keyboard every day. I had the phone. Two phones in a row where you could slide up the screen. And you had the full horizontal keyboard. Oh, yeah. Oh, man, I miss that every day. You can't type without looking anymore, especially with my fingernails. Well, auto correct is great. So I like when I, I like when it pre guesses what my next word is and leaves extra letters in the way when I don't type that.

6:05I'm like, I can't wait to fix this. But I feel really lucky. I think I, kids generation, they at least got a childhood that, yeah, there were cell phones, but they were for phone calls. And some that, some like that digital texting where you'd use, you know, you'd have to hit three times to get the letter that you wanted to. During this test, again, this was a study of a hundred students. And the students grabbed their phones in average of 64 times during the school day. The average teen logged on for more than two hours of screen time during school. Wow. That's the, I am surprised by that as well. I also feel like that's a wow. Do kids take any notes on their, on their iPhones? I think there's some reason that they would use it scholastically. Certainly in high school. I don't know this, but I'm going to just sort of venture the guess. I think by high school teachers are saying, here's your stuff.

7:06You can take a picture of it so you know your homework for the week or whatever. And I think that's probably pretty normal. Yeah. But I wouldn't think they're doing that in middle school. Right. I teach a three hour class every week. And I, no cell phones are allowed ever except for on breaks. So they have to keep them in their backpack. That's what I tell them. High schoolers use their phones more than middle schoolers averaging 23 minutes of screen time per hour. Wow. While in school. That is. That is a lot. That is a. I wonder if there'll be a Renaissance. I always think the pendulum swings. I was going to say this when Bob said what she said about her phone. There I recently saw a thing where there's a new phone coming out that does have the old keyboard. The old, you know, thumb keyboard that we're all used to. I don't think people will be able to go back though. Like I think about going back and then I say to myself, you know what I need?

8:09I need my maps. I just do. Right. Like I can live without some, I don't game on it. I don't have any games on it. Yeah. I try not to play any games on it because I will. Kill an hour with a game. I also am very much into talk to text now because I just the keyboard so annoying. So I blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, period. Send, you know. Anyway, young people, 0% of them made it through the school day without touching their phone. And no one was surprised when you finally hand that when you finally give after you say to yourself. Just for emergencies. Oh my gosh. My life is busy enough without fighting my kid over whether or not they get a phone. All right. Wake up with Sarah and Vinnie. They're great.
