Substitute Teacher Charged with Sexual Abuse in Alabama

0:00In Birmingham today, March 10th, a former Substitute teacher in Calhoun County, Alabama faces two charges of sexual abuse involving young students. Jeffrey Owen worked through an agency that supplies subs to schools, not directly for the local school board. The alleged abuse happened during the 2021-2022 school year at Weaver Elementary. The case started when one child reported the abuse and their sibling made similar claims. Parents took it to Weaver Police, who passed it to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office because of their school resource officer at the school. Owen was quickly arrested on those two counts. Sheriff Fallonhurst noted that it's not clear yet which other schools Owen might have worked at or when his seven gig ended. The county school superintendent confirmed Owen had subbed there years ago but hasn't been on any campus in a long time. Meanwhile, officials are digging deeper into Owen's work history to see if more victims are out there. No other reports have surfaced so far, but the investigation continues.
