About this episode
Sometimes we know we've changed before we're willing to admit it.
We keep looking backward for permission to become someone different.
We want the people who knew the old version of us to understand the new one.
We want our past choices to somehow validate the person we're becoming.
But change doesn't always come with approval.
Stop Asking The Past To Approve Your Change explores the difficulty of moving forward when part of you is still waiting for the past to give you permission.
You don't need everyone from your past to understand who you are now.
You don't need an old relationship to validate your growth.
You don't need to remain loyal to an outdated version of yourself simply because people became comfortable with it.
Growth can make old patterns feel strange.
The things you once tolerated may no longer fit.
The goals you once chased may no longer matter.
The person you were may have made choices that today's version of you would never make.
That's not necessarily hypocrisy.
Sometimes it's evidence that you've learned.
You can respect who you were without becoming who you were again.
The past can teach you.
It can explain you.
It can even remind you how far you've come.
But it doesn't get to decide who you're allowed to become.
You don't need permission from yesterday to change today.
Sometimes the healthiest thing you can say is:
"That was who I was. This is who I'm becoming."
Let the past remain part of your story without requiring it to approve the next chapter.
