Today I joined by not Big Dom as in the Bodyguard up in Philadelphia. I kicked off the sidelines. I call him Big Dom because he is from 9290 game. He's a producer and host there in the Atlanta area. He is here to talk Steer's Falcons. We're going to start doing what we talk to the Opsis sideline. We'll see if we can have you to bait too. I don't know if we'll go skip Bayless and Steven A Smith here. Yeah, try to stay away from that. How are you doing this week? You see you're representing the gear there but I understand you are still a fan yourself. Despite my obvious gear, I do have to represent for the market and everything. I am a Steer's fan. My dad did a really good job of brainwashing me at a young age and making sure that I bled black and gold.

If you do listen to me here, I'm not into the game. I talk a lot of Falcons but I sneak in some Steer's in there when they let me occasionally. I'm really excited. I'm happy to be on and I'm happy to talk to Steelers. Certainly everyone knows about a game which is fantastic. It's clear they made a great choice bringing on a Steer and a station. You covered a Falcons extensively. We're here regular seasons only a couple days away from a record of this. Let's talk Steer's Falcons. First order of business, I would like to hear your reaction on the big decision. Drop this morning. Monday morning that two atago by Loha is going to be the starting quarterback. Do you think it was going to take that way all along? What's your thought? I think it was funny.

I've talked about this a little bit. It feels like I've done a lot of hula hooping almost. At first I was very much like, hey, it needs to be Pinnix. Everything that Pinnix was saying a couple of months ago was like he was aiming to be there for week one. I'm under the impression that this year the most important thing for the Falcons is to figure out if Pinnix is going to be your quarterback of the future. That was kind of my initial thought process. Then things started to creep forward and we started to get closer to regular season. We went through training camp and even though two of it didn't look great, it still just sounded like they were expecting to really be cautious with Michael Pinnix's junior, which I'm not mad at. I wasn't surprised when they named two of the starter. I think it is a little... for the Falcons faithful, it's a little rough because you want to see Pinnix get this full season.

You want to see him get this full opportunity to really assess what he is, what he is. But you're going to have to wait a couple of weeks in my opinion. I think that they want to wait until he's ready. That's something that Kevin Stifansky kind of mentioned. He had a press conference earlier, around 1030, where he kind of mentioned that this wasn't them closing the door on the quarterback competition. So to speak, this really was a decision based on Pinnix's readiness and him being fully grasping the offense, getting those reps in practice and actually feeling confident in his knee. I guess a good insight because I live here in Atlanta markets, so the big thing I heard was two of us were just so bad in the preseason. I'm saying you can't sew up and down. It was hard to give him the starting job and then hearing Pinnix physically at least being cleared to presume 11-11 action.

I would have really surprised, but that makes a lot of sense that they want to slow roll it. Last thing they want, especially with this injury history, is to do something that's going to put an all you longer. So to that point, I feel like that sentiment was also kind of felt here. And I feel like in a perfect world, I think the Falcons would have loved for two of them to come in here, be super cheap and just be a good veteran who would allow. I think in the perfect world, the Falcons would not have started Pinnix week one. I think from the plan all along for them was we want to make sure he's fully healthy. And I feel like in a perfect world, two of them come in and play as well. And it's like, all right, we can put two out there for a couple of weeks and now we really have to deal with the storm. The issue was two of them went out there and played really poorly. And every time you saw him go out, go out there on the field, he was fumbling a snap, looking hesitant, not getting the ball out quickly. He did have moments, especially in that third preseason game where he was kind of able to move the ball.

Their offense looked a little bit better and he was able to kind of keep things on schedule. But I think two of his poor play made it more of a conversation than they wanted it to be. And I think at the end of the day, they just came down to the simple fact of, hey, look, we want to make Pinnix is 100% ready. Has the reps, has gotten in there with the ones, has the practice and we don't want to throw him out there if he's not feeling confident and feeling healthy. So that's, that to me is what it came down to, but it is, that sentiment was very much felt of, hey, look, two is playing so poorly, you have to throw him out there week one. No, certainly. It was kind of funny just while we're talking about quarterbacks, it feels like the biggest performer of the preseason was this undrafted free agent who actually that's right about at the big lead. Jack Strand.

I don't know, let me ask you this, if you know, as someone lives in Atlanta, I want the problems to do well. Not this one, but I want them to do well because Atlanta's the vibes are up when the problems are well. But if things don't go well with to a or with Pinnix, do you think there's a chance Jack Strand gets opportunities late in the season. I, in the big strand believer, I like Jack Strand a lot. I was actually pushing for a little tongue in cheek, but I was actually kind of on the train of like, hey, I wouldn't be my, be mad at him being QB2 behind Pinnix. But realistically, I don't know if there's a pathway to him getting on the field this year, just because the Falcons did make the decision to keep all four quarterbacks. So you're keeping Pinnix, you're keeping two or you're keeping Cooper Rush and Jack Strand is going to be QB4. I feel like they want the veteran experience because I think even though you want to evaluate what Pinnix is, you are in a situation where the NFC South is very winnable.

So you're going to be kind of in this position where you're always looking to compete. And that's why I think they want to have as many veteran guys in that room. So Jack Strand, unless it's an unmitigated disaster and like everyone goes down with injuries, Jack Strand probably will not see the field this year. But I don't think that it's something that's out of the realm of possibility for him to at some point be a legitimate contributor in some probably backup role. Absolutely. Well, now we're kind of talking about the mountain's division. Let's kind of talk about division of familiarity. The Alpins head coach is of course Kevin Stevens. He has pretty familiar with the Steelers. Grant is not this version of the Steelers because my Tomlin no longer had coach in terms of my McCarthy. So both of these teams have new head coaches with. But you know, McCarthy is a Pittsburgh guy. Kevin Stevens keeps coaching against the Steelers. So with that being said, where do you think that puts the Falcons in their division with your head coaches and then how much advantage do you think it's possibly give to Falcons come Sunday?

I think Kevin Stevens is a good coach. I think for what he had in Cleveland and getting any sort of success out of Cleveland is a credit in his own. So I think he's kind of he's proven his chops a little bit there. I think that from the rest of the division, at least in the NSC South, I think that he does bring a nice different flavor from what we've had here the past couple of times. I know that a big criticism of Rahim Morris was that he kind of was quote uncle A Rob Rod guy and just kind of the you know too much of a team player, not really a decision maker. I don't think he's going to have that issue with Kevin Stephansky. I think he has a system. He knows what he wants to run. I think that he's going to come in and establish that early. I think that you see what he was able to get out of Cleveland. You know, like they're often with even despite their quarterback was able at times to really get things going.

He's coming into a situation here in Atlanta where he has probably the best set of skill players that he's ever had in B-Jong, Drake London. If Kyle Fitz can really emerge himself this season as a consistent top five tied in. Obviously the addition is Zach Raya branch via the draft. So you have a lot at your disposal. It's kind of just the question of can the quarterback get everything involved and that's what we're going to see. Kevin Stephansky kind of going from one weird quarterback competition to another here, but we'll see how he can manage this one. I think that going into Sunday, I think it helps that he kind of knows what to expect a little bit with the Steelers. What's very interesting is that I think Patrick Graham makes this Steelers defense look a lot different, which I'm very excited for at least me as a Steeler fan. I think that you'll see a little bit more kind of packages, exotic glitzes, things like that and just kind of a little bit of the mad scientist stuff that we saw.

He was able to get a lot out of those defenses in Vegas. So I'm excited to see what that looks like, but I think that's going to be the fun matchup is. Can Kevin Stephansky in this offense keep to a safe and block up front and if they can make it work against the Steelers D? I love that you bring up the Falcons skill positions in that and how it's going to match up because Steelers, I mean, granted they have some aging key guys. They have some really on the rise of young guys, you know, you talk about some like they're curvy on the edge, you talk about it Wilson as a linebacker. So we're the junior who we don't know for sure. Let's talk about Joey really quickly. What's the you tell me because I'm freaking out as a fan you tell me when is this deal going to end?

I think you know, Alan and I talked on the live space is last week. Or no, it was actually Brandon who brought this up last week with last Wednesday. He said that you know, the cam Hayward and Troy Paulamolo deals in 2025 or 2011 or 2011. Sorry. You know, receptively those got done to 11 hours like the day before or even a day of. So if it gets done, I think it's going to be a close call, but personally, I'm not overly optimistic. But with that being said, I just don't know if quarter hides enough leverage because isn't like the leaving on Bell situation where you know the franchise tags is unsigned. So he's doing anything other than rescinded, but they don't want to do that. He's under contracts like he can. You know, he's freaking injury early once, but it does that too much like eventually. I want to say his contract could potentially toll, which.

Yeah, yeah, because then it just boys and then you're still got that contract here. I think it's something where he had to he would have to at least suit up for 11 names. And then he would be able to sit out for like the last six if he really wanted to go that route. I don't think you don't I don't think you're going to go that route. I am a little annoyed again, just as a stealer fan. I'm a little annoyed that they're playing this kind of hard ball with Joey Porter Jr. This is like this is a prospect you've literally been waiting for for over a decade like you like Joey Porter had a kid. This is what we were excited about the kids started throwing that he's really good. Winter Penn State has been in pitch like. It feels like there's anyone who should get a no brain or deal. It's him and especially because he's lived up to it in my opinion. He's one of the five best BBs in the league, but hopefully it like I said, maybe it's done at the 11th hour, but we'll see. No, for sure. Now with that being said, can I certainly back to the skill position parts?

What matchups? I feel like the obvious one's going to be Joey Porter Jr. versus Drake one down because one's going to probably be a little motivated, especially after the talk that Porter talked a couple of years ago. Say basically he was just running cardio all day. What are two matchups that you think for the Falcons offense versus the Steelers defense will be on it. You know that individual level will be the ones that could decide this one. I think the big thing is going to be Kyle Pitt. Steelers defense over the past few years has had a little bit of an issue. Defending tight ends tight ends typically get big yards up the middle against their defense again. Patrick Graham said enough as a defensive coordinator there. Hopefully that you know maybe they've gotten that fixed, but Kyle Pitt. I think he's such an X factor for this team because he had a good season last year when you look at his statistics. But if you really look at it on a week to week basis, it was like five games at the end of the year where like 60% of his production came from outside of that.

He was very much a walking zero from like for a majority of the season. So if he can establish himself in an offense where they're going to want to try to get the ball out of two of his hands quickly. I think Pitt lining up against flying backers whether that stayed Wilson. Whoever it is Patrick Queen, if they can make those matchups and they can keep up with this and not allow him to have those type of huge impact games like he did last year against Tampa Bay where he has three touchdowns on like 150 yards. That I think will be a big part of it is just kind of seeing how much Kyle Pitt actually plays a part in this offense now that he has gotten that new deal. Secondly, it's going to be the old line, specifically I'm looking at Jawan Taylor. He's going to be lining up at right tackle and he still seems to have that false start jumping issue.

It popped up in the one previous season game that he had two false starts. So it seems to be an issue you're going to be lined up against. Feed they what you're going to be lined up occasionally against Nick Herbig, Alex Heismiss. You are either going to be jumping off the line or you're going to get beat if you can't get your feet set and really get anchored. So I think that's going to be the key there because if you can keep two of us, that's the thing with two of being named the starter to his extremely accurate. And the best thing for the Falcons offense is getting the ball out of his hands quickly. Don't have him hold the ball where he has to try and look through and go through a ton of reads. Have him make quick decisions where he can get the ball out to be John on you know screens and quick flats. Get the ball out to Drake London. Get the ball to pit in motion. So that way they can kind of do a lot of the creating afterwards like you saw in Miami with Tyree Kill and Jalen Watt.

So that to me I think is the big thing is if Kyle fits really can win those matchups against the linebackers across the middle of the field at times and also can the offensive line. And specifically do want to say they really hold up and keep to a upright for his majority of the game. Absolutely. We've talked a lot about the offense. Let's put it back in his defense because if they have their top two edge rushers, I would say this is this has the makings of a top five defense. I'm telling you I really really really like this defense and it sucks that Jalen Walker goes down. You're going to have him gone for the entire season with the torn ACL. You will get James Chris Jr. back serving the eight game suspension. So he'll be back for week nine, which will be in international game against the Cincinnati Bengals. So I'll say hopefully we can do you all a favor that week. But it's interesting. I think they've done. They did a good job. I think in my opinion this off season of trying to patch the pass rush. You had a really great season for the first time in a long time.

Atlanta as far as getting sex last season this year. The majority of that sex production is gone. So it's a lot of new faces. Like I said, you're going to be missing James. James is junior, but you go out and get the area Smith back out of retirement. You've got some options. I actually really love what I've seen out of the young pieces, especially the young linebackers guys like Kendall Daniels and Harold Park in his junior have looked really, really well in training camp and pre season. So I think that if they can kind of hold things down to start the season, it'll be fun to see what that that defense can look like moving forward, especially from the pass rush standpoint. And then the run game, I think, will be much improved. The rush defense was atrocious last year. They were really getting the up the middle. You went and replaced some of this limber athletic guys and just got some big hog my knees up front. And in the defense line looks different. It looks like they're built to stop the run finally. So I like what they have up front. And then the secondary I'm really excited about Jesse based junior AVI and AJ Torell.

You're going to get Billy Bowman junior back Xavier Watts. You got I think this secondary has the makings to be really good. Xavier Watts was fantastic last year. I watched him. What I attended the Falcons versus the Rams. I mean, he was a game changer that didn't. He didn't have all the stats, but everywhere. Yeah, everywhere. I mean, he made a huge out of you balls lose. He made a few tackles. I mean, I believe he had one like scoop scoop up where he stepped out of bounds. Yeah, I kind of get scooping scooping for you. But he kind of yeah. That that him and Jesse Bay to also was familiar with the Steelers he played for the most of one point. Yeah. To me, that is if they're not in the top of safety duos, they've got to be the best safety duo. I was I was going to say I think the Falcons have a legitimate like no fly zone type of secondary. I think that you can make a case that this is one of the five best secondaries in the league.

Especially if you can get a beyond to develop. So probably be working a lot in the slot with the spine to see his extremely physical. I love his tape coming out of clumsiness. So I'm that's the the area of this defense probably the area. The one area if you had to ask me which position group I am most excited about on this team offense or defense for the Falcons is the secondary hands that. Absolutely and I think it's funny you know for years the Steelers will always caring brothers and out of Falcons get their turn with the. The action there you go absolutely do you think anyone's going to get early snaps or do you think he's going to be worked into defense. So that will be interesting to see like I said he he also kind of was coming back I dealt with some injury stuff early on with practice and training camps. So I think they will ease him back in but I don't think it will take long. If he's in that I would I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't you probably won't start week one.

I wouldn't be surprised if by week three he's starting. Sounds a lot like a Joey Porter junior plan back in exactly. So I think it's a little bit of a big picture. We talked about individual matchups we talked a little bit about you know kind of advanced and whatnot. I think what stands out to me with the Falcons from a non on field personnel is they have two. So I think that's a whole run selections on their coaching staff. That's Jeff Holbert as if that's a coordinator and Bill Callahan as offensive line coach. I mean when Cleveland was good like really good with that offensive line from like 2020 to 2022 2023. Callahan was the head coach the offensive line coach coach under Kevin Stephansky. So I think that's a big that kind of acquisition is for Atlanta.

So I think one keeping I'll mention Greg Holbert really quickly. Just keeping him and keeping that continuity on that side of the ball. I think it was so important. It would have been very easy to say all right we're getting rid of bringing more. So we're going to clean house get rid of everyone else. I think that's a big part of the fact that this defense is going to carry over a lot of the terminology and philosophy and everything. Even if the faces are different and you do have some different pieces there. I think that continuity is really great for that side of the ball especially after having one of the best. Sac performances that you did from in franchise history last year. So that point I think is huge as far as Bill Callahan. I think because I feel like last year. It felt like the offense was really predicated on as far as a run game. It was inside zone left inside zone right and that was basically it.

I'm really excited to see him one if he if there's anyone that can get you want to let us stop jumping off sides. It should be him. But if he can if he can solidify that but just you have an offensive line that's pretty set. You know like a grind you are getting up there in a certain parts of a mask use on the left side is getting up there. But you have an offensive line that you've invested in you have an offensive line that you paid money to. If you can really get this unit to gel and like I said no matter who is going to be taking snaps for you at quarterback. Neither Michael Phoenix Jr. or to a tongue of I will have proven that they can stay healthy for a full NFL season to this point in their career. So you're going to need this offensive line to be solidified. I think back to it a name that the stealer that stealer fans will be able to appreciate Mike Munchek and what he was able to do for the stealers. Oh lion for so long. That's kind of what the Falcons are hoping they're getting in Bill Callahan here.

And so far like I said I'm really excited to see the new look offense and what fans he can do. Especially in the run game. I think B. Jean is going to have a really really really big year this season. But that offensive line is going to be the key for everything. Absolutely no definitely. You know it's funny kind of mentioned the past rush aspect of the Falcons and how tough that's been for them. Especially like it feels like since their Super Bowl run back to 2016 offensive lines same same thing when when they went to Super Bowl. They have a really good offensive one. So it's the sounds like it's going to be a big hit the quarterback situation who knows that that got the pieces. You know it's funny. It feels like there's there's just a lot of uncertainty with that that aspect of it because it's like there's it feels like things are in place. It's just you don't know if you have the right driver and it's like it's a really nice car.

I just don't know if you have the right driver. I don't know if you have the person who can really steer it. So we'll see. Absolutely. Well we want I want to thank you for joining us. One more question and it's going to be a prediction question. But I would love for you to take the opportunity to have self folks you know how to follow you and. I could told them that you're on 19 on the game but you know are you on. X or Twitter. Yeah I still call it Twitter but you can follow me. I think the tag is right in there. I think I'm pointing that it correctly here. There you go. At Dom you are alive that's Dom D.O.M. and then the letter U and then the letter R and then the word live. That's basically my handles anywhere on socials like I said I am on 92 90 game down here in Atlanta Georgia sports radio. So on the audacity network from Monday nights 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. with the football season coming up. So we'll be doing like more so midnight to 1 a.m. because we'll have Monday night football going on.

And also outside of football if you want to check out I do do some WNBA talk as well. So I have the dream report that I record weekly with my partner in a while. So you can check all that stuff out there like I said on sports radio 90 to you on the game in the audacity app. And get all the podcasts and all that good stuff. Absolutely. Everyone can probably hear the. He's got the night to 9 p.m. on an audacity app. Yeah, it's because it works. You know, you just knows it like that. So wrap everything up. What's the big prediction? Who wins? Yeah. What's the final score? So it's funny. I wanted to wait until it's to play the win lost game with this with the schedule and everything for the Falcons. And now that I kind of have all of the answers, I'm going to do that on my show later tonight. One of the things though, I don't think the Falcons win any game that to a start. I am out onto it to be completely honest.

I to his to his head moments in the preseason, but I think that overall, if you are hoping that there is any sliver of the guy that was there in 2023, you're fooling yourself. It's not there anymore. I'm sorry. So if you're asking me, I think that this deal is defense. One going on the road playing in high and field. And yes, I will call it high and field. I know that it's at pressure stadium now. You'll give a lot of brownie points. But going up to high and field, I think it's going to be tough. I guess, especially, I'm really excited for the Steelers defense. I think the offense will be much improved on the Steelers side. The key for the Falcons, I guess it can you keep to a upright if you can. Can you how much damage can be John doing? Can Kyle pit in the middle of the field? So if you're asking me, my prediction, I have a Steelers win final score.

I'll go Steelers 27 Falcons 13. Sounds like a pretty solid score. I mean, Pittsburgh doesn't get over 30 points too often. I think it feels like a bit of a car to the Magic will kick in there. We'll see. No, certainly. Well, I appreciate your time, Dom. Everyone be sure to check him out on 19 out of game and on X. And I will probably hear you tonight for 19 out of day to be honest. Absolutely. Absolutely. Absolutely. Thank you for joining me. Absolutely. And folks want thank you all for tuning in to the Steelers night shift on Steelers now. We will be live on spaces on Tuesday nights. We have a regular broadcast on Wednesday. Don't forget to check out the morning rush in the afternoon drive. But for Dom and I here on this recording on Monday night, but we'll publish this on Thursday. Well, hope you all have a good night and we will see how it goes someday.
