States, DirecTV Sue to Block Nexstar-Tegna Merger

The deal, announced last August for $6.2 billion, would create the largest local TV owner with 265 stations across, 40 states in the District of Columbia. Earlier this week, the Democratic-led attorneys general from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, and Virginia fouled in federal court in Sacramento, California. Direct TV added its own suit there, claiming the merger aims to jack of fees they pay for content. Critics warned it would drive up cable and satellite bills for everyday viewers while hurting local journalism. In 31 markets where the company's overlap, newsrooms could consolidate, reducing competition for stories and cutting jobs and struggling local media. Star argues the merger lets them better challenge big legacy networks and tech giants.
