ST G25 - Guardians 8, Reds 6 (Reds Keeping SIX Starters, Will Benson Makes Roster, Bullpen Mostly Picked)

Coming up just a bit, myself and Corey Phillips talked about another busy day of Reds news on Tuesday, but first let's recap some cactus league baseball. The Reds lost 8-6 to the Guardians, Reds have now lost 3 straight games back to 512 in 12 this spring. Nick Lidolo started for the Reds on a game on TV, a rare game, of course, was on during the world baseball classic final just classic spring training baseball where it just seemed

1:01like every time they broadcast the game on TV, it's like kind of the worst time to do it. But nonetheless, it was on TV, so that was good. Interesting thing, it was actually the Guardians broadcast, but the Guardians does not have TV broadcasters. They were broadcasting the game with their radio team overlay, the great Tom Hamilton on the call. It seemed like it was probably a low budget operation. The graphics and everything looked good still, but it was not their TV announcers. I like to see more of that in spring training. It seems like why not do that. So that was cool to see. But nonetheless, Nick Lidolo pitching for the Reds, he got off to a fantastic start. He retired the first 5 batters he faced and 11 of the first 12 batters before he gave him a homer to Reese Hines. Now Lidolo struck out the final batter to get through four really strong, and he's just that one run allowed a solo home run to Reese Hosskins, but in the fit that all kind of in haywire, he gave a bleed off walk, then the next batter reached on it aired.

2:02The ball was absolutely smoked though. I met McLean and then Lidolo would strike out the next batter, but then he gave a two RBI double to Travis Bazzana. Lidolo would get Juan to fly out, but his day would be done. And a line for Lidolo, four and two-thirds innings, three hits, two earn runs. One walk, seven strikeouts, overall, a pretty good day for Nick Lidolo. Here's what he had to say after the game. It felt good and everything, even after the area that I think it was crazy I gave it. The one hit to Bazzana, other than that, you know, that felt pretty good about it. I felt like it was better. It was a step forward, another one might rhythm a little bit better. Still feeling like I could control the count better overall, but you know, it was definitely a step forward, you know, got up to, I don't almost, I think, 80. So it puts me in a good spot going into Sunday. Graham Ashcraft gave up a double to the first batter that he faced, the ball was absolutely tattooed, one-fifteen off the bat, but then Ashcraft really settled it. He struck out the next three batters in order.

3:03That saw three straight scores outings for Graham Ashcraft at the really difficult start this spring, so that is certainly good to see. Another near perfect performance from Sam Moll, a batter reached on an air, but Moll got a double play and got through the inning without any damage at all. Sam Moll has yet to allow a run now and eight innings the spring with ten strikeouts. He does have six walks, but very encouraging spring from Sam Moll. Brock Burke on the other hand, it was a really rough day. He gave up three hits, three walks and five earn runs. Brock Burke has now allowed a run in three straight outings after a strong start this spring. Brock Burke, one of the players that we'll talk about coming up that was secured a roster spot on opening day. Now, I'll be a Marta hit his third home run. It was 425 feet one on off the bat. Marta told him now he's got an OPS of nearly 900, which just really seems crazy to think because he was struggling so bad early this spring, but you see the small sample, let's

4:07swing it back. Joey Marta playing his best baseball of this spring. L.A.D. The cruise was one for three, Matt McLean, O for three, South Stewart, O for two with a walk. As was Tyler Stevenson, also over two with a walk, Brian Hayes, O for one with a walk, Steer and Hinds, both O for two, and then some prospects that had a good days came Collier, got a hit. He was one for two. You're like confident, absolutely smoked a ball. He was two for two. And how about Alfredo Alcantara? He had a home run and also walked great day off the bench for Alfredo Alcantara, player who finished the year at the Daytona Tour Tugas last year, but a player that really kind of started to rise up to the rankings, certainly looked really good on Tuesday night. One of the notes before we get to our conversation today, Hunter Green, back with the Reds, he spoke with the media about his elbow injury. I've been dealing with discomfort for a while, and obviously through the course of

5:07the season and feeling certain things in areas, especially as an elbow as a pitcher, you think that it's just, maybe I'm just feeling a little bit of inflammation or discomfort and it's to be expected because we're pitchers, and obviously it's a lot on the body. So I think I've always, like that's always been there, you know, the bone spurs came up as chronic, so there's no time stamp just when it formed, but it's been there. So it's nice to kind of feel a difference, and it's really early, so I still feel it, it's still uncomfortable and swollen, but there's already a lot of freedom. So going into spring, even though I felt it, I was like, maybe this is me ramping up again getting ready for season, I'm about to see a lot of my trainers, we're gonna have a bunch of recovery modalities and things that I can work on to try and flush out, whatever the inflammation is that I'm feeling right now, see if I can get through it. And unfortunately it continued to get worse and knowing how the season is and the expectations not just under me, but as a team, it makes sense to continue to pitch, I'm literally feeling

6:08a stabbing pain in my elbow every single pitch, and we throw thousands and thousands and thousands of pitchers. Not just, we're not just talking on the big league field, we're talking movements, catch play, long tall stays in between, so it's just not realistic. My mind was telling me push, push, push, and that's how we are, this competitive players, but the reality just isn't there for me to perform at a high level and to get through a full season, especially playoffs because some of us in the world are going for it. All right, let's go and get to my conversation with Corey Phillips. We started off talking about AU Haney, Oswarez, the game winning hit for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic Final as they beat the United States three to two. Take a listen. All right, Corey, let's start off talking about the World Baseball Classic. I kind of got torn in between how much I could really get into it or not. The negative is like seeing like the USA pitching tonight, it's like this is the best that the USA has to offer. It's kind of hard to like be fully invested in it, but at the end of the game, you see

7:09the Venezuela players crying and you see how much it means to them and the pride. So I kind of get torn in the middle of like, is this so great or is this kind of still an exhibition? I kind of had some fun in our discord, you know, around people about it, call it an exhibition, being a little bit of a heel on that. But nonetheless, it was great to see our guy, AU Haney, Oswarez, back-to-back days, have huge hits. He had, me and Greg talked about this yesterday, Corey. He had struggled in the spring, he had struggled in the World Baseball Classic coming on the heels of struggling after getting traded to Seattle, again, two games of the middle whole lot, but it's nice to see him as we're getting ready for the regular season coming up with some big hits. And more than anything, I think you're really seeing kind of the leadership that he can bring to this team. Yeah, you're exactly right. We all know what Genos Warez has brought to the other squads that we had to sit and watch him hit home or after home or when wishing he was still back in Cincinnati.

8:10So hopefully he can bring some of that pop back to our lineup. And like you say, just his leadership, his clubhouse personality, it's just, it's going to go a long way as far as the reds. And especially on the back end of the year, it seemed like we started to fall off after the All-Star break last year and we were kind of missing that leadership. So hopefully with guys like Geno and the clubhouse man, it'll make a big difference and kind of push these guys over the edge. It's, tonight just reminded me how much I love this dude. Like he is just one of the all-time great dudes. You know, when a player gets traded, he kind of forgets that kind of stuff. You know, it's like, yeah, he's gone, you know, I've focused on the team we have now. Man, you see him tonight and how much it meant to him this game, this whole, this whole tournament. It's like, man, I'm glad that guy's on our side. I don't know what to expect from him this year. We've dissected it all. I'm just excited. He's on the reds. I think he certainly can help the reds. We'll see how it plays out. But I'm excited to see Swarris. Man, I want to be great if he does this like a three-run bomb on an opening day.

And well, there actually isn't a battle because everyone did chase burns, rent louder, and brain of Williamson all make the rush. So I'm going to break this down. This is a trolley goalsmith that an incredible job breaking all this down. I'm going to read through this so you know exactly what we're looking at here. So Andrew Abbott and Nicola Dolo and Brady Singer are going to start the opening series against the Boston Red Sox that's next weekend. And then one of Burns, louder or Williamson, they're going to start the first game against

11:18the pirates. That's on that next Monday. And then in game, and then another one will start game two, Abbott will start game three. So whichever one of Burns, louder or Williamson doesn't make the start against the Pittsburgh pirates will be available in game one and we're game two of that series as a piggyback starter long reliever tandem. Right now the order of the rotation in spring training has gone Burns, louder, Williamson, Burns has been a day ahead of louder on the pitching schedule. And so like the rest are not given this official name. Probably goes with his calling it a condensed six man rotation as the reds are saying it's not a it's not a six man rotation and it's not a piggyback rotation. And Charlie explains it's not a six man rotation because one of the reds are this is technically going to be pitching in relief. It's not a piggy piggyback tandem start situation because the schedule for the pitchers won't be completely set in advance, cut and dry or independent of circumstances going into that game also was something that is very short term.

12:22So Corey, you kind of your thoughts overall on this. I'm honestly I'm excited just because it's like even Charlie brought it up in the article. He said it's a good problem to have. Having that many pitchers is definitely a good problem to have. See him the boy Brandon Williamson has been throwing the ball in spring training. It's almost hard not to put the guy on the bus. Like he said, he was getting on that bus. Well, he most definitely proved his point. So in a sense, I've got a lot of questions, but at the same time, I like it. I like having that. I like having that flexibility, just kind of looking at the numbers with the few amount of left handers that we've got coming out of the bull pin. It almost feels like that's where Brandon Williamson kind of fits into this whole thing. But like you say, it's nice to have that flexibility too. If there's a match up to where the guys are struggling against the left handed pitcher, they've got a lot of lefties that day, whatever the case may be. Now Williamson becomes your starter and you've got louder chowder coming out of the bull pin or whatever the case is. So I like it. It's a little bit of chaos. I've got a lot of questions because not even really a lot of questions.

13:23My main question is they kept saying it's not a long term fix. This is something that's going to be short term and Charlie even brought it up in the article about giving a deadline of April 20th and they say they would have it figured out by then, where's the line there? What happens to make this all of a sudden get figured out because it's obviously not a hundred green. We're not going to have them till closer to the Alistair break anyway. So where's that line? What is it that has to happen to get this completely ironed out? I guess more questions than answers. But by the same token, I'm excited to have in that many good arms on the staff as never a bad thing. Yeah. First off, I think it's all credit to Brennan Williamson is I do not think the Reds went to camp expecting Williamson to be in the rotation if they had enough healthy pitchers. But I think he just pitched so well that he kind of forced their hand and you know what man, you love to see that like he absolutely deserved it. And you look at these three guys, it's like, you're going to look any of them in the eye and be like, yeah, sorry, you're going to go on a triple A and start like no one deserve that.

14:23As far as like kind of how this whole works out, I think it's important to know that there's a lot of off days early in the year. Now, this can all get thrown into pure chaos if there's rain outs. But we obviously have the off days. We always have the day after opening day. We have an off day again right after the pirate series. And then you do play a full week that first week in April, but you have another off day of that Monday, April 13th. So that is three off days in the first one, two, three, four, five, five series. You have three off days. So that makes it. I think a little bit easier to get by with only seven relievers because I think that would be a big issue is only having seven relievers. But the fact that you have all those off days, it's going to be easier to kind of keep those those relievers and I think right now, like Chase Burns is probably not going to be geared up for more than four, five innings max. So it kind of makes sense to have another guy there is fresh places for him louder in Williams.

15:23I think a probably stretch had a little bit longer, but I don't think either one of them you feel confident they're going to be six innings every time out. So I like that. I also I love the kind of the the comment like, yeah, we're not going to tell you what we're doing either like through the Pittsburgh Pirates, man. I love it that they're the team that doesn't know if they're facing burns louder or Williamson. Wait till the last minute you have to announce your starter. I love that concept, uh, mess those guys up as much as you can. I everyone's, you know, look at those red socks here as an opening week. I'm looking at the Pirates series, those three games. I want to beat the hell out of those Pirates, those first three games. I want to send a message to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Shut the tone. You had a cute offseason, but, uh, we're still the better team. We were better than you last year. Um, yeah, this is their division game. Let's go for it. I absolutely. And like you say, there's, I never really even thought about that trying to game plan for the Cincinnati Reds. Yarmbe comes a completely new headache when you don't know who's coming in as you're

16:24starting as you're starting pictures. So good luck with that because they could either be two of our right handed hoses or it could be Brandon Williamson, who's absolutely pitching his butt off right now. So good luck to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but not not so much. We're going to come in town and set the tone. I like, I like how you phrase that. And the Pittsburgh Pirates have two positions right now that are probably platoon positions, at least fan graphs is listing it that way. I think they're going to probably structure their lineup pretty much differently for right versus left. So when you have, you know, Williamson can go and it kind of can mess that up a little bit. The more you can do with that, um, the better I like that. I don't know why the Reds have always been so against the whole six man rotation. Like they've been pretty steadfast against it. Um, I would love to kind of hear Derek Johnson explain a little bit more detail like in an interview because I've just, I've seen the Milwaukee Brewers do this over and over again. And it works for them. Now, Derek Johnson and the Reds pitching was incredible last year as a reason

17:24the Reds make the playoffs. I'm not going to sit here and like try to point the finger at them. But I don't understand why they're always so against the six man rotation. Yeah, that's, that was kind of my thought too. I don't know what the ramifications are. They brought them up. If I get in that Charlie goes miss article that they were talking about that Francona was worried about rain out and stressing the pole pen and that sort of thing. But the amount of rest that it gives your next starter, especially with the inconsistency that we have in the back in those back three because we don't know what we're going to get out of louder who didn't pitch last year. Williamson coming off the injury and obviously what we know of chase burns. So having that inconsistency, I'm not sure if it if it's a hindrance or if it's a help because we don't know what we don't know yet. Yeah, we'll have to see how it plays out and, you know, how long they stick through that they were very clear that this is a short term solution. And what to see how it plays out again, you know, there's also a possibility. One of these starters has a shoulder that's or or something. If something comes up and they need to take a break and it solves itself and

18:27you're to a normal rotation very quickly. So we'll see how that shakes out. The other piece of this reds are pretty much announced the whole boot. But I'm kind of surprised they did still so quickly made so I think eight or there was nine spring training games left when they sort of made this news. So Pagan sat on Ashcraft Burke Phillips and Pierce Johnson all secure on the roster. I think probably the only two that maybe there was a little bit of a question would be Ashcraft and Phillips, but both those guys where it's kind of trusting I think more what they saw last year than what they certainly than what they saw this spring with you. They're one of those guys. Well, they have been better of late. So it appears right now, Corey, the final bullpen spot is going to be between Samuel, Kyle Nicholas, Zach Maxwell, Luis May, and Hagen Danner, me and Greg talking about this yesterday. I just I have a hard time believing they're going to do the DFA, Sam Moll, unless they work out a trade because I do think someone

19:28would trade for him right now. I think either it's Sam Moll or Sam Moll gets traded and you maybe want to keep Hagen Danner. I don't think they're going to put Kyle Nicholas on the roster. I know people were, I know me and Greg were talking about the yesterday. They were just having seen him at all. He was in the World Baseball Classic. He has an option. I think they're going to send him down a AAA fair or not. Like I just don't think they saw enough of him to really put him on the roster. And then Zach Maxwell and Luis May, I think they're pretty safely headed to AAA. Even though they both pitch much better. The last, I think there's both thrown each four consecutive scrolls outings. They just walked too many guys at this point. For Kona is not dealing with that. Yeah, if you're coming out of the bullpen, you've got to throw a stretch. And I think there's just not going to be much room for you at all. But like you said, it's pretty much in the cards that Sam Moll is going to be that other spot in the bullpen. Just like you say, to not have any options, number one, and then number two, and nothing to have another lefty besides Bert coming out of the bullpen. So I'm pretty sure it's Sam Moll

20:29unless something catastrophic happens in the next nine days. But I think I can agree with you there and kind of get on board with that. And with the Nicholas thing, it's, I don't even think he was getting much innings in the baseball, World Baseball Classic either. So give him a little bit more time to stretch out and triple A and get him ramped up and ready to go. And when the time calls for it. As like you said, those things are going to work themselves out. And they'll be a spot open before we know it. Hey, Hagen Daner, kind of the wild card. I always put up some really like impressive stuff plus numbers and, you know, a lot of the pitching analytic guys really like Hagen Daner. My guess is the Reds would probably like to hold on to him as long as possible this spring. I believe some of those type of players that are pictures, they actually can have like an opt out that is before you get there. So they can try to get on a team. So I don't, I don't know, Hagen Daner's contract. I don't think anyone's made that public knowledge. So that's something to kind of watch with him. But he's, I guess, maybe the wild card in that mix. But again, I just, I don't think they're cutting Samuel. He's looked really good this spring.

21:31He's looked really good at times. I think people forget he's been hurt last couple of years. But my god, that guy was incredible in 2023. I mean, he was untouchable. Yeah, that second half of that second half of 2023. He was, he was Mr. Consistent coming out of the bullpen. So if we get anything that looks, it even remotely like that, Sam Moe was worth, worth taking a shot on. In terms of we're going to did clarify that he said it would not be our right left thing. He would not be keeping a guy because he's lefty or not. I don't think that necessarily meant anything for Sam Moe, but that is probably worth bringing up as well. Uh, Will Benson. He is long. They said, Will Benson ain't going to be on this opening day roster. They added all these outfielders and boy, were they wrong, Corey. 23:39that absolute spark man and he's he gets tricky from time to time. Sometimes I'll disappear in the lineup. But when he's hot man, he is as hot as ever and I'll never ever forget that time he hit the game winning home run against the Dodgers and him slam in the bat in the whole nine. That was one of the most exciting times I've had as a reds fan. So my heart goes out for Willie B and I hope he makes the best of the situation, man, because he is he is deserved. I feel like he's gone through his ups and downs with the Reds organization and he has earned this right to be on the opening day roster and I hope he shines. I really do. Yeah, Benson had a great spring. As did JJ Blue Day in Nathaniel Low. It appears they haven't I don't think they've announced Dane Myers officially on the roster. I don't think they've announced no more to officially on the roster. But I think those two are probably pretty clearly in especially Dane Myers just because of how Willie hits lefties in this this lineup does have a lot of left handed batters. So it appears it comes down to JJ Blue Day in Nathaniel Low. I think they're going to go with Nathaniel Low just because I think they want to get JJ Blue Day every day at bats. He can be option to Louisville

24:45whereas Nathaniel Low cannot. We assume he would get picked up. He's looked solid this spring. He's a guy that has pretty good pedigree. It sucks for JJ Blue Day man. It is not fair at all. He had a great spring but the classic good problem to have in my opinion. I think you're right. I just having that flexibility with the second in-fielder on the bench with you depending on what happens with Spencer Steer and how you kind of how you kind of view him because these are utility guys but just having that extra in-fielder gives us a little bit more flexibility off coming off the bench. So I'm kind of leaning that way myself. I did see one on fan graphs that actually had JJ Blue Day starting as our left-fielder had been sitting steer on the bench and didn't have Nathaniel Low on it but I just I don't know it's just something feels off about that one. So I kind of leaning your way brother. I think Nathaniel Low kind of offers that big bat. He's another better in presence and a young lineup. So I'm kind of leaning that way myself but if it happens to be JJ Blue Day I can't act like I'll be I'll be mad about it because but there's a heck of a

25:48player man and I really like what you can bring to the roster as well. Yeah and you're really clearly need JJ Blue Day at some point this year. And so yeah I think I think for the the 2020-16 it makes more sense to kind of get him every day at bats and when is he going to play? If he's behind Benson on the dev chart where is he going to play? I mean like we're talking like he'd be struggling to get three or four at bats a week and he's still a young player like Nathaniel Low's older I think he can kind of you know relegate to a bench utility role. I think a little bit easier. I don't think it's going to mess him up as much as it would mess up a guy like JJ Blue Day who's been trying to refine this swing and all that kind of stuff. So for me it's a it's an easy difficult decision. It's an easy decision because of just the way that the roster shakes out it's a difficult decision because JJ Blue Day played his tail off and it was great. But so it was

26:48well Benson and that kind of is what it is. Okay you're you're exactly right. I don't even know why and this is just me being crazy and so I might just be talking off top of my head but it feels like Dane Myers might end up being like more of an everyday centerfielder at some point too. I feel like I feel like Frank Kuhner like having him in the lineup the way he handles the bat the way he walks and commands this strike zone. I can see I can see a day where Dane Myers is as a starting centerfielder and kind of moves TJ over into that left field corner and then of course we've got Martian right. I could see something like that happening but that's just me taking off top of my head being crazy but I like what Dane Myers brings man he's going to be a he's going to be a good threat there in centerfield and I like what he does at the plate. Yeah Dane Myers has really good at bats this spring entering play on Tuesday he had 11 walks was tied with three players for the most in a whole of Major League Baseball and spring training. So see the ball well I don't think he hits right into pitching well enough to play every day. His numbers he was right into pitching

27:49been pretty bad over the course of his career but he's it left he's really really well and he's a great defensive centerfielder. I think he's significantly better than TJ Friedon I think that will show the more you see him. So maybe he plays a little bit against right handed pitching just because of of of how good defensively he is but I think that would be the reason he would play over the the bad against right handed pitching but I'm excited about him I think he I think he's the kind of guy they could really be an underrated piece that has a role that just performs it and performs it really really well and the Reds didn't have enough of that was last year they had like some good players but they didn't have guys just filled that platoon role and just excelled in that role. I think Dane Myers can really excel in that role and not to mention I could see him coming in the game late like especially like the well they marty and well we marty look much better the plate of late but if the only marty doesn't clean it up defensively he's going to be

28:50getting subged out of the game in the eighth inning for Dane Myers early and off to my opinion. Yeah you're absolutely right I never even thought about that because like you said we don't know what we're getting in right field yet so if that's the going to rear it's ugly head I can see Dane Myers playing a lot there especially as a defensive substitution there in the late innings. Well Corey my friend this has been a lot of fun I've enjoyed chatting with you good to catch up with you we'll have you you want as a regular contributor here helping out probably on some weekends and a few select days throughout the summer yeah man there's a lot of fun. Brother I really appreciate it I couldn't be more excited to be back and just ready for some Reds baseball and some nice weather because man this Ohio crap that we're going through right now it's got me up and down and I'm just ready for some ready for some nice weather and some baseball for sure.
