St. Blaise (February 3) — From Dom Guéranger’s Liturgical Year

A meditation for the Feast of Saint Blaise, from Dom Guéranger’s “The Liturgical Year”. Saint Blaise was a bishop and martyr of the early fourth century, venerated as a courageous shepherd of souls during the persecutions of the Roman Empire. According to ancient tradition, he suffered imprisonment and death for the Faith, and on his way to martyrdom miraculously healed a child who was choking on a fishbone, an event that gave rise to the Church’s enduring devotion to him as a powerful intercessor against ailments of the throat. His cult spread rapidly in both East and West, and his feast is marked by the solemn blessing of throats with crossed candles, recalling his charity and God’s mercy working through him. Saint Blaise stands as a witness to steadfast faith, pastoral care, and the healing grace granted by God to those who remain faithful unto death.

Dom Prosper Guéranger (1805–1875) was a French Benedictine monk, liturgical scholar, and founder of the Solesmes Abbey, renowned for his pivotal role in reviving the Benedictine Order in France and restoring the Roman liturgy after the disruptions of the French Revolution. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot. A staunch defender of ultramontanism and traditional Catholic worship, he also championed the revival of Gregorian chant, significantly influencing the liturgical renewal movement.
