About this episode
Sometimes the problem isn't what you're saying.
It's how quickly you're saying it.
We rush through explanations.
We answer before the other person has finished.
We fill silence before anyone has had time to think.
And we mistake speed for clarity.
Speak at the Speed of Understanding explores the value of slowing down enough for your words to actually be understood.
Good communication isn't a race.
Sometimes the most important part of a conversation is the pause between one sentence and the next.
Give people time to process.
Let them ask questions.
Notice when someone looks confused.
Don't keep adding words simply because the other person hasn't responded yet.
Speaking more slowly doesn't mean being less intelligent.
It can mean you're more interested in being understood than in simply getting the words out.
This matters especially when conversations involve emotions, conflict, instructions, or complicated ideas.
A rushed explanation can create confusion.
A thoughtful pause can prevent it.
You don't need to fill every silence.
You don't need to prove how much you know.
You don't need to say everything at once.
Say what matters.
Pause.
Listen.
Then continue if there's something useful left to say.
The goal isn't to speak slowly for the sake of speaking slowly.
It's to communicate at a pace the other person can actually follow.
Sometimes clarity begins when you stop trying to get to the end of the sentence.
