Japan's Haiabusa 2 spacecraft just did something that's never been done before, bouncing a laser off an asteroid while zooming past it at over 11,000 miles per hour. The probe fired its laser twice at an asteroid called Torifune, hitting it from about 12 and 9 miles away. Here's what's really impressive. Those target spots on the asteroid's surface were only about 100 feet wide. The experiment happened back in July, and it'll help space agencies figure out better ways to study asteroids up close in future missions. Here's a story that matters. A Fisherwoman in Papua New Guinea just helped rediscover a fish, scientists hadn't seen in 40 years. On June 18th, 2026, Helen Asu was fishing with a traditional hand net near her village when she caught the spinach pipefish, a freshwater relative of seahorses that's found only in the sepic river. This six inch fish uses its long snout to catch prey while hiding among water lilies. Now scientists are excited to study this species that's been missing since 1985. Time to test your memory. Alright, more news coming up. Also making headlines. Scientists in Canada just figured out why snake embryos curl into tight-clockwise spirals. It's because their spines grow way faster than their guts can keep up. The researchers studied over 900 embryo images and found the spiral twist gives the spine room to grow while it's staying connected to the digestive system. The Tutsumiashita from the Canadian Museum of Nature says it's like a strap buckling when one side gets longer. And that's exactly what's happening inside those eggs. Back in the headlines, scientists in South Dakota have picked up a puzzling signal from that luck Zeppelin detector that might be our first real glimpse of dark matter. This mysterious stuff makes up most of the universe, but we've never seen it directly.
What's surprising is that the signal suggests dark matter interacts with regular matter in a more complex way than expected. For years, particle physics seemed stuck after finding the Higgs boson in 2012, but this discovery shows we might not need bigger machines, just more creative approaches. Next up, mathematicians have been exploring the Langlands program for decades, trying to uncover hidden connections between different areas of math like secret tunnels in a huge city. David Benzvi from the University of Texas, Austin, says most mathematicians have heard of it, but don't fully get it. This program sometimes called a grand unified theory of mathematics, because it hints that all these separate math topics might actually be linked in ways we're just beginning to understand.
