South West Aboriginal Medical Service Board Dismissed

0:00In Adelaide today, February 27th, the board of the Southwest Aboriginal Medical Service in Western Australia has been fully dismissed by the federal court. The judge ruled that the group used oppressive conduct and factional control to unfairly kick out members and a director. This health service for Aboriginal communities has over 1,200 members across New Wongar country in southern Western Australia. Treble have been brewing for 12 months at the organization. It boiled over when members and elders stormed the headquarters in Bunbury, demanding the removal of chair Philip Ugl and director Ernie Hill, lead plaintiff and director Leslie Ugl sued after she and 20 other members were expelled following a peaceful protest. Members who were expelled expressed pure joy at the court's decision. Former board member Donna Turvy called it a win for the community after a tough fight. She set it hands back control to the people who built the service and sets up proper governance moving forward. She also praised the staff for keeping operations running smoothly through the chaos.

1:03Late Thursday, judge Craig Colvin issued final orders vacating all board positions. He declared the expulsions invalid and set an annual general meeting for April 23rd to elect a new board. An independent lawyer, Craig Sanderson, will chair that meeting. Philip Ugl has taken leave and declined to comment. The service previously said it disagreed with parts of the ruling, but will cover the cost of the independent chair. No orders on legal costs were made, paving the way for a fresh start.
