Solve the Reality Not the Word Game

About this episode

Sometimes a problem becomes harder because we're arguing about how to describe it instead of dealing with what is actually happening.

One person calls it disrespect.

Another calls it a misunderstanding.

Someone says they're being ignored.

Someone else says they're simply busy.

The words change.

The reality doesn't.

Solve the Reality Not the Word Game explores the difference between arguing over labels and actually identifying the problem underneath them.

A disagreement can become a battle over terminology.

Was it an ultimatum or a boundary?

Was it criticism or feedback?

Was it avoidance or needing space?

Was it failure or simply a result you didn't want?

These distinctions can matter.

But sometimes they become a distraction.

You can spend an hour proving what something should be called while doing nothing about what needs to change.

Instead, ask:

What actually happened?

What is the consequence?

What do we need to change?

What would make the situation better?

If two people use different words for the same underlying problem, finding the perfect label may not solve anything.

You don't always need agreement about the vocabulary before you can address the reality.

Maybe communication broke down.

Fix the communication.

Maybe expectations were unclear.

Clarify them.

Maybe a boundary was crossed.

Address the boundary.

Maybe the arrangement simply isn't working.

Change the arrangement.

The goal isn't to win the argument about what happened.

The goal is to understand what happened well enough to respond intelligently.

Words can clarify reality.

But they can also become a game people play to avoid confronting it.

Don't let a disagreement about definitions become an excuse to ignore consequences.

Solve the problem underneath the language.

Name it honestly.

Address it directly.

Then move forward.

Solve the reality.

Not the word game.
