About this episode
Sometimes an argument keeps going because nobody is actually arguing about the same problem.
You're debating the wording.
The definition.
Who technically said what.
Who was right about one sentence.
Who remembers the conversation differently.
And meanwhile, the actual problem is sitting untouched.
Solve the Reality Not the Word Game explores what happens when we stop trying to win the argument and start trying to understand what is actually happening.
Words matter.
But words are supposed to describe reality—not replace it.
If someone says, "You never listen," the useful question isn't necessarily whether "never" is technically accurate.
The useful question is:
Do they feel unheard, and why?
If someone says, "You don't care," arguing about whether you care may miss the point.
Ask:
What happened that made them experience it that way?
And the same works in reverse.
You don't have to accept an inaccurate accusation simply because someone feels strongly about it.
You can separate the wording from the underlying issue.
Ask:
What are we actually trying to solve?
What happened in reality?
What outcome do we both want?
What part of this argument changes anything?
This is especially important in conflict.
Arguments often become competitions over language because language is easier to fight about than reality.
It's easier to prove someone used the wrong word than to admit the relationship has a problem.
It's easier to defend your intention than examine the effect of your behavior.
It's easier to argue about who started it than decide how to stop it.
But solving reality requires a different kind of honesty.
You may have been technically correct and still contributed to the problem.
Someone else may have described something badly and still be pointing toward something real.
Both things can be true.
The goal isn't to eliminate disagreement.
It's to make disagreement useful.
Stop asking:
"Who won the argument?"
Start asking:
"What is actually happening here?"
Then solve that.
Because reality doesn't care who had the better wording.
Reality only responds to what you actually do.
Solve the reality.
Not the word game.
