This is Global News Today, every region, every story, every day. A New World Happiness Report from the University of Oxford shows heavy social media use is linked to big drops in happiness for young people. 15-year-old girls spinning more than 5 hours a day on it face the biggest declines in life satisfaction. The study tracks ratings from 0 to 10 on how people feel about their lives. Young adults under 25 in English-speaking countries and Western Europe have seen their scores fall by nearly one full point over the past decade. Those using social media less than one hour a day report the highest well-being levels. In places like the Middle East and South America, heavy social media use ties to better well-being, and youth happiness hasn't dropped. Researchers point to stronger family and social connections there as a key factor. Finland tops the list as the happiest country for the ninth straight year, with other Nordic nations like Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway in the bus. Top 10.
Their success comes from even wealth distribution, strong welfare systems, and long healthy life spans. Costa Rica jumped to fourth place this year, up from 23rd and 2023, thanks to solid social ties. The United Kingdom sits at 29th, matching its lowest rank ever, while calling for more real social interaction online. Thanks to our sponsor for helping bring you this episode.
