Number one, well, it's been a wacky weather stretch and it gets wackier today for other parts of the country. We are waking up to temperatures in the teens or below right now in corporate woods. It is 12 degrees, feeling like negative eight degrees. This after we were out in t-shirts on Saturday, playing a little t-ball in the backyard. Go figure. So we got the cold blast and there are slick roads across Kansas City this morning. So definitely take your time as you're going to work. There was blizzards up to our north and then today the same weather system is expected to bring severe weather across much of the southeast and mid-Atlantic with a level four at a five severe risk Monday afternoon for parts of South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. And a level three at a five risk is in place from Georgia into Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey. So it's the same line of storms that came through yesterday.
We got a little bit of snow here, depending on where you're at around Kansas City. And now is racing eastward with winds up to 80 miles an hour and they're expected to be strong severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings as it moves east today. So this is something that is going to impact potentially well over 100 million Americans along the east coast and it started here yesterday. Number two. Right next up here on the six at six, it is that time of year. March madness is officially underway after selections Sunday yesterday. KU is taking on Cal Baptist on Friday at 845 in San Diego in a four versus 13 matchup. And if KU wins, they're likely to play St. John's in a four five game, which would be one of the best games of the weekend. If you get bill self against Rick Patino in that second round, that would be just fantastic
drama. And then on the other side of the bracket, Missouri getting a 10 seed against seven seed Miami. They will play on Friday night in St. Louis at nine 10. So it's best to take a nap on Friday. If you want to watch the late games where our two local teams are going to end up playing on Friday night late tip loss for both of our local teams. And for those wondering, yes, my villain of a wild cats are back in the big dance as well. Let's go, baby. They are in eight seed taking on nine seed Utah State. They are playing on Friday afternoon at three o'clock. So their first time in the tournament since the J right arrow four years ago now. So it's good to see them dancing as well that they win. They'll take on most likely number one seed Arizona. So I'll just take one win. Just give me one win. That's all I need. Number three. All right. Next up in hour six at six. Let's go to mission where a burglary at the target mission ended in an officer involved shooting early on Sunday.
After police say a suspect fired at an officer that was right near the old station here that we had a KC amount used to go into that target all the time. Mission police were called at about 440 in the morning yesterday to a burglary in progress at the target on broadmore in mission. Officers set up a perimeter around the store. They saw a person behind the store carrying duffel bags confronted the suspect who ran away. During a chase, the suspect fired a handgun at the officer shooting multiple rounds. The officer returned fire and hit the suspect. The officers then gave first aid at the scene and the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening. No officers were hurt. Can I just remind you on what happened here? Police show up to a burglary. They get shot at. They then shoot the suspect. They perform first aid and the suspect is expected to survive.
Just your reminder, I think it's good to have one of these once in a while that the defund the police crowd is so lost, is so confused and is so hateful. When these men and women are literally keeping our businesses and our homes safe, taking on gunfire, people are shooting at them trying to kill them. That suspect had killed a cop. You think that person would really would have cared? No, they were shooting at a police officer. Police returned fire. They hit the person and then they render first aid and they get them to a hospital. Were there expected to survive? How many of us are doing that? Unbelievable. So that was in mission over the weekend and it's being investigated now by the Johnson County officer involved critical incident team. Number four, well, sadly, another officer involved shooting this one in Lee's summit where an officer actually got hurt during an arrest to best buy. The suspect is on the run.
Lee's summit cop was treated for minor injuries. After being hurt while trying to arrest a suspected shoplifter saturday afternoon outside a best buy. This was 345 in the afternoon. Northwest chipman road, I 470 and 50 highway reports of a shoplifter. Police said a woman had reportedly stolen several items at target before driving to best buy officers were given descriptions of the suspect and her vehicle. An officer then found the woman as she walked out a best buy tried to detain her, but she ignored commands got into her vehicle. As the officer tried to continue to arrest her, the woman started the car, put it in reverse and backed up at a high speed. The officer was caught between the vehicle and the open driver's door dragged as the car hit a portable sign cross several lanes of traffic and struck a curb on a sidewalk in front of the store. When the vehicle hit the curb, the officer fell and was struck by the driver's door, the suspect then sped out of the parking lot. The suspect remains at large, but the police do know her identity and the officer was taken
to a local hospital, treated and released. I hope that when they get the suspect, Melissa Johnson, the Jackson County prosecutor, hammers, hammers, the suspect number five. And next up, we will go to Kansas City, where KCPD find two people dead inside of a Northland apartment. This was near North Annie, Oak Road in northeast 42nd Street, 430 yesterday morning. Officers got there. They heard gunshots from inside a nearby apartment. Officers enter the apartment, found a man and a woman who had both been shot. Both people died at the scene. Detectives are not looking for a person of interest right now. Of course, believing that the two people involved in the apartment were the ones who were part of the shooting. How it happened? What unfolded is still left to the investigation. Number six. And last, but certainly not least, or I guess it really depends who you ask. The Oscars happened last night. They were going on. Yeah. I watched a little bit wanted to see what it was all about did not come off hyper political.
The best picture, one battle after another, best director Paul Thomas Anderson for one battle after another, best actress and a leading role, Jesse Buckley, hamnet, and best actor and a leading role, Michael B. Jordan in centers. Those are your top winners from the Oscars. Best night, and that is your six at six.
