Sylvie, eight things I learned at Bears Training Camp, including a breakout season for Rome or Dunes. Written by Mark Silverman. This article is being read by an automated voice brought to you by Everlet. Ryan Poles, three word spoke volumes. When asked if Kyler Gordon will play for the Bears again, the first words out of the GM's mouth were, I don't know. The Gordon injury mystery remains one of the oddest stories
in my 31 seasons covering the Bears. While there still is no clarity surrounding one of the most important players on the defense, Training Camp did offer answers on several things as the Bears prepared to defend their NFC North Crown. Here are the things I learned. Whether you think the Bears will lead the NFL in points scored on offense or you're concerned about the defense and left tackle, you cannot debate the feeling of legitimate hope. Hope is the most powerful feeling a fan can have, and with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams in place, the Bears should always be in contention. It's an unfamiliar feeling, but one we can all get used to. Ben Johnson is even better than you know. One Detroit talk show host told me back when Ben was hired that he's not some nerdy offensive play collar and he was right. Johnson has instilled toughness on both sides of the ball, accountability within the locker room, and has become the true leader at Hallis Hall. Yet this is no dictatorship. Johnson has showcased his assistant coaches through media availability
and by giving them the chance to call pre-season plays. His ability to communicate while demanding excellence is everything we've dreamed about in a Chicago head coach. In year one, Caleb was simply a member of the Bears. In year two, he became the playmaker for most of us we're hoping for. In year three, this is Caleb's team. There's a palpable difference in his leadership and Williams has earned it. Johnson said that his quarterback had some goofy to him, last year, and has since matured. Caleb is now an extension of the head coach and demands that everyone pull on the same end of the rope. They'll need to, since the offense could be asked to score 30 plus points in some games. We'll see how much Caleb's accuracy and consistency improve, but it's obvious to me he's a better leader and his teammates want to follow him. Romo Duns is flying under the radar. Fans have raved about Luther Burton, Colston, Loveland, Zavion, Thomas, and others, but Odunza had a spectacular camp. The foot looks completely healthy and Odunza is playing fast.
I'm expecting a breakout season. Don Dre Swift has come a long way since signing with the Bears. Swift ran with much more decisiveness last season, trusting his blockers. There was a thought that Swift wasn't a Ben Johnson guy after Detroit moved on from him, while Johnson was the offensive coordinator. Even if Kyle Monegai is healthy, I'm expecting a career year from Swift. Contrary to popular belief, Johnson values the run as much as any play-caller in the league, and Swift will be ready after the entire building marveled at his camp performance. Jordan Van Den Berg is the real deal. The rookie six-round pick will show he wasn't just the flavor of the month in camp. The effort, athleticism, and strength are top-notch. Van Den Berg will have to continue earning Dennis Allen's trust, and the playing time may not come right away, but the Bears have found something here. Tyson Begent is a premier backup. The role of a good second-string quarterback is defined by his ability to keep the rig on the road for a few games while the starter gets healthy.
We all hope Caleb plays all 17 regular season games, but if he doesn't, Begent's quick processing, knowledge of Ben's offense, underrated athleticism and popularity with his teammates will be money well spent. Ozzy Trapilo needs to be studied in a lab for his super-healing properties. We still don't know when he'll be ready to play, but his rehab has resulted in the opposite outcome of Kyler Gordon's. We may not know if Gordon will ever play for the Bears again, but we learned that Trapilo's desire and determination are top-notch. Mark Silverman shares his opinions on the Bears Weekly for Shaw Local. Tune in and listen to the Waddle and Silvie Show Weekdays from 2-6 PM on ESPN 1000.
