Sickle Cell Unit in London Stays Open with Extra Funding

It ran as a pilot from September to January, giving quick treatment to avoid full emergency room stays. Barts Health NHS Trust announced an extra 1 million pounds in funding to keep the unit going. Officials highlighted better community outreach and more capacity for red cell exchange transfusions which cut complications and boost quality of life. The Sickle Cell Society broke the news on Instagram, drawing cheers from dozens in the comments. Community members celebrated the teamwork that saved the service. Sickle Cell Disease hits black and Caribbean groups hardest, causing painful and dangerous crises. This follows an initial 2 million pound investment to launch the unit and reduce hospital admissions. The new money extends care through 2027.
