One Rental At A Time — Should You Listen to Stephen Bartlett? Let's Discuss. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Should you listen to Stephen Bartlett? The YouTube channel is called The Diary of a CEO. There are lots of options out there for you, but should you add Stephen Bartlett to the rolladex and see what he's got going on? Bo, you were just at the Vault conference put on by Patrick Bethe David and you had the opportunity to see Stephen speak. What's the deal with Stephen? Yeah, I didn't get to go to the full conference. I had clicked on a link, months back and one of their, one of Pat rep called me like probably 50 times and I'm like, dude, I'm so busy, I can't go. And he said, just buy a general mission ticket, go for one day, it's going to be worth it. And I essentially did that. And I went yesterday and granted they have like platinum and CEO. People were paying like 18, 20 grand a ticket for these, you know, most, and it's at the MGM Marina, okay? So I didn't
know this, but yesterday, Stephen Bartlett was one of the featured guests. And I had listened to his book Unautable before and I was like, yeah, this guy is impressive. But let me tell you something, when I heard him riff yesterday, I have not been that impressed. Wow, I don't think in a very, very long time. I would put him up there with any thought leader entrepreneur I've ever listened to. And I will make that statement on record. That guy is truly amazing. He's probably like 30 something. I mean, I mean, he is amazing. And I'm going to follow him more and more now. But, you know, high level. He gave you eight things, right? There were eight things that he kind of tried to communicate. Is that right? Yeah. Yeah. So basically, the way he drew his YouTube channel from zero to now 20 million people, he tests every freaking thing. So stop guessing and start testing. One of Stephen's biggest themes was
testing instead of relying entirely on intuition. Right? That's why he's it's not that he's the greatest interviewer. It's he tests and he's okay with failing. He wants to fail fast. He talked about that. That's his second thing I took away. Can you can you outfail your competition? It's he's he pulled up research papers. It's shown that if you can fail more than your competition, you're going to end up winning because you're fit. He like moves so quickly. He also talked about how everything is moving so much faster in in business in social media and technology that you have to be moving quick. You can't listen to what somebody told you a year ago. Right. Because he's on the the train of like all of this kind of automation today. I he runs a nine figure investment fund. And he uses he uses an AI. That's the only person in his business that manages everything. I mean,
the guy is like it's number three. The 1% improvements matter. There probably wasn't one thing that made the diary of CEO successful. It appears to have been hundreds of thousands of improvements stacked on top of one another. He talked about that. He said most people won't do the 1% they won't save the $1 per day over a long period of time. He made that a big point and that's why he's constantly winning at the things and it makes a lot of sense. Right. Like he just constantly stacking over a long period of time. He says number four, you have to earn attention. You can create the greatest content in the world, but nobody benefits from it if it if nobody clicks it. Right. Same thing with a business. A great product with terrible positioning can lose to an inferior product with much clearer positioning. Number five, how versus who? This might be the biggest lesson for established
business owners. Entrepreneurs constantly ask, how do I do this? At a certain point, the better question comes, who can do this better than me? Steve spends 30 to 40 hours a week recruiting and growing his organization, hiring people from like Amazon. He told us a story how he stopped one of the Amazon's people and finally flew there and met with her and got her to so he's big on cultural index. He's constantly hiring and growing. That's what he's doing. And number six, culture isn't what's written on the wall. Culture becomes visible when things go wrong. Customer's angry. What does the employee do? So he's really big on people that have, he gives him cultural index and if they're alignment, then they would probably get hired if not, they're not getting hired. I mean, that's his, you know, he wants people that have same mentality as him. And actually, what was interesting, Patrick, Bet David's second control of, I think it's called
Lion Holdings, they were doing a bit yesterday. And it's amazing what Pat has done, right? He's just sold his insurance company for 350 million give or take. Pat is a guy that I really admire. I don't kind of believe, I don't follow some of his political views, but from a business mind, I love his concept. He's a real like business guy and he's impressive as well. So that's why I also went to like him. Number seven, become a better listener. This one applies directly to podcasting. Steven really kind of stressed that his whole thing with his gasses that he's really letting them speak and he's going with it. He doesn't prepare questions, right? Like he goes in and he uses kind of his intuitive nature to let the podcast go. So he does a lot of the interesting things. And he has AI now. He's created the AI now that can out edit and he's statistically proven that
through his testing because he tests everything that AI now edits his videos better than humans do. So he was able to scale down his production people that way. And he's like got to statistically proven. And he also a big point. He made was that he referenced the guy in the 70s that broke the four minute mile. And he said, why is it after he did it within a couple of weeks, 11 other people did it? And I thought I forgot what the theory was, but it's like about like a brick wall, right? Like people out to brick wall can't go past it. He always was told like on numerous occasions, no, that idea won't work, that idea won't work. And everything he's proven them. I mean, he's failed before, of course, a lot, but he's proven that. So he pushes past the the brick walls. And then number eight, build something you actually want to keep doing. A big point he kept on reference to referencing is that like he gets people that reach out that
are the biggest, the biggest Hollywood stars. And if it's not alignment, he doesn't have them on the show. He uses AI actually to figure out like which people would be a good fit. And then he has all these algorithms. So like I can't even do it just this, but I'm telling you, I was in awe listening to this guy. And I'm not, you know, you're not easily impressed. Yeah, I was thinking I'm not usually a fanboy, but I am a fanboy of this guy. Like I really think that he's going to do huge things in this world. He's very well connected, very well spoken, and very impressive. So I'm going to kind of, I have all these notes here. I'm going to unpack his notes a little bit more. I'm actually going to do some more studying of him because I think he's that smart. And I think he's worth studying. So if you're not, if you're not following him, I would successfully do from maybe not to watch his podcast for that purpose, but to get an understanding of how his mind works because I think like people like him, like that guy in my mind will easily become a
multi-multipollinear. Wow. He's that good. Yeah. That is. Well, here are the eight that I wrote down. Testing, not guessing. I love that. Number two, fail fast. Don't, you know, lots of people overthink. Right. I think it was Cody Sanchez said one time the reason she can go so fast is because she'll fail three times before somebody else even starts. At least I think that was her. One in one percent improvement matters. I love that approach. There's a lot of us that go out there and try to just swing for the fences. If you just do one percent a day for, you know, 30 days, that's, that's a lot of compounding improvement. You have to earn attention. I thought that was very well said. How versus who? Absolutely. I think in the beginning, everybody starts with how, but it really does boil down. Real exponential growth is who? Culture is visible when things go wrong. I love that. Right. You're, you're, you're really tested not in the good times in the bad times. Better listener. That's a big thing for podcasters and something I was horrible at in the beginning. I always wanted to interject and cut people off and, you know, all of that. I'm trying to be
better, but not, not great yet. And then finally build something you want to keep going. That's, that's a big one for me. Right. I still get excited every day. I know I'm talking to you at 10, 30 on Wednesday and, you know, mad at 10. And as long as that keeps being fun for me, we're going to keep doing it. So I love this list. And I will do, I will make a special attempt to go see Stephen Bartlett speak one time. Please do. I mean, it's great. I mean, he get literally. And it's funny because like you're the complete opposite from your podcast perspective, right? Like, like, you know, like if he had, if he was working on your podcast, you would have probably 10 million subscribers because he's like, he's that, he's that intentional. But I think that also proves a point to me is that I mean, obviously we can't be a jack of all like, like that's not our focus. Like, you know, to like, hey, I need to get the perfect thumbnail, the perfect title, the perfect description, the perfect any any split testing all that, right? Like that's his like he goes super deep, right? And that's might not be your or mine. But if you're out there and you like, you're make,
like your, your goal is your livelihood. And it depends on your YouTube channel. Then yeah, you got to go deeper. But it is what it did make me realize is that whatever we're trying to do in life, and that's our main focus, we got to go really, really deep with it, right? Like you can't just be like a, a, a weekend warrior real estate person. If you want to be a real estate investor, you need to be like new listing hits the market. You need to be like in your zip code. You need to be looking at that. Like you have to, you have to have that place today for 10 years. Yes, exactly. There you go. That's it. That's it. There you go. Bo you are amazing. If somebody wanted to reach out to you and talk shop, what do they do? They usually see the thing that it's coming. It's coming. Coming. Any it was go to one rental meeting.com, one rental meeting.com. And then Zubar always goes, oh, it's amazing. You bought a domain name. Yeah. I just for a 13 bucks a year.
