Sherwood Forest Trust's Heathland Fire Prevention Education

0:00On April 29th, Sherwood Forest Trust just kicked off a big education push in Mansfield schools to stop fires from wrecking Nottingham's Heathlands. The Heathland Fire Prevention Education Project runs through March 2028 and targets over 3,000 kids and their families with. Fire safety lessons and hands-on activities. They're teaming up with the Academy Transformation Trust, further education college, to roll out assemblies in secondary schools, sessions and primaries, and field trips to actual Heathland spots. It also covers family workshops, holiday fun, community events, and even volunteer gigs to build real protection vibes. Heathlands rank among the UK's rarest habitats, pack with night jars, lizards and tiger beetles, plus they store carbon in the soil, fires hit hard, scorching wildlife homes, and blasting that carbon back into the air, causing damage that sticks around for years. The goal is straight up prevention, cutting both accidental blazes and deliberate ones by schooling folks on why these spots matter ecologically and how fire risks them big time.
