Pleasure to be joined by our buddy Connor O'Gara. You know him for so many years. Of course, working over at Saturday down south now, he's hosting a new podcast, the OG kickoff with Connor and Will continuation of the podcast he's been doing for many years.

2:03Connor, welcome in, man. Good to have you. Good to be here. Yeah. It is strange. I have intros where I'll read off the very beginning. I'm doing the intro the same exact way. I should probably change it. Stop myself from saying, welcome this Saturday down south podcast and set off to say is the OG kickoff. And I feel okay doing that because the same podcast feed like we didn't, you know, have to ask people to like subscribe to a new channel with wherever they listen to their podcasts, which was great. And that was such a blessing. But yeah, it is a little bit strange. I do have to kind of stop myself and they're like, oh, yeah, all right, not with Saturday down south anymore. You know, we're doing our own thing. And yeah, it's been going well so far. What I like is for those who follow you over the years, you have a lot of different things y'all have done like film study and revisiting old old SEC games and things like that. But one of the things that you guys are doing is a draft pod and wanted to get you on because a few days ago, you did a draft pod drafting quarterbacks for the upcoming season. Now, quick caveat.

3:04You guys did all of college football. Today, I want to focus on just kind of the SEC guys, but you got the first overall pick. And I was a little surprised that you didn't go with what I think the general public, the consensus would be the number one quarterback, Arch Manning, you went with Trinidad Chambles. Why? I think he's just that dude. I think he's someone that is in a really favorable spot, despite the fact that he lost Lane Kiff and not sure if you've heard about that at all or if talked about that at any point. Lost Charlie West Jr. Get that still has the same offense. He's going to be running the same offense with John David Baker. He's spent three years on that staff with Lane Kiff and Adol Miss. And he's going to enter a situation in which he has the best one to punch in college football with he and Q on Lacey. He gets an offensive line that's experienced. And yes, there's a lot of turnover at receiver, but Trinidad Chambles was 20 seconds away from playing at a national championship. Like, I don't think we should lose sight of that. It did so without his head coach throughout the duration of the college football playoff.

4:05And I just think that what he showed, especially against pressure, especially in that Miami game is a reminder that this dude was special. This is a guy that finished eighth in the Highsman trophy voting, despite the fact that he did not come into the year as QB1. I don't think anybody knew who he was coming into this season unless you rate die hard into the weeds Ole Miss fan. And his rise while mediocre is not something that was just a flash in the pan. I think he showed real traits that make you think this is sustainable. This is a guy who gets it has a real feel for the position. So to me, both are flying. Give me Trinidad. Give me Trinidad over the field. All right. It's time for pushback. My only thing with Trinidad as a quarterback, 22 touchdown passes, only three picks last year. That was great. But I look at some of his games passing last season and games he started, right? Eight of the 13 games he started just won touchdown pass in those games. And of course, he threw three against the City of L4 against Mississippi State, both those teams are terrible. But I feel like if we're going to pin him the number one quarterback, you know, maybe

5:10would like some more multi touchdown pass games, is that being too nitpicky because he has the rushing ability to? Yeah. A little bit. Like, they gave it to Lacey when they got close. Yeah. Lacey set the Ole Miss record for single season rushing touchdowns and, you know, had what the third most touchdowns ever by an SEC player because he's just the finisher. And if you're in those spots and you have a running back that you can trust, that was something that Ole Miss was so desperate to find with their most talented roster ever in 2024. But they're fourth down or third and short or whatever it was, situations. They're like, all right, let's get JG Piggies out here. Like they didn't have an option like you on Lacey. So I think that's, that's kind of explained some of those numbers. But look, I think that he is just a guy that you trust in those clutch spots. And I would point to all those games and go, when and any of those games did you have the thought, man, turn it at Jamilist. This play is kind of preventing Ole Miss from being able to pull away from this one or man. He's having a grenade game. He didn't do that. So the floor to me is so high.

6:11And I think that he's going to have more interceptions this year. Like I think that'll come with the territory. And that's perfectly fine. If it still results in the same big time plays that he was able to make on a consistent basis in 2025. The, by comparison, you know, Archman, he had multi touchdown passing games in seven games last season. So where would you put Arch? Is he, would you say he's the number two best quarterback going into the SEC season this year? I have a three. Wow. I have a three. And that's controversial. I took him a second in our draft and I actually took him ahead of the guy that I have at second in the SEC. And I did that because I thought Will was going to take archmaning. So there's like some draft strategy there. Like I didn't think I'd get him back and I thought I'd be able to get these two guys. I've kind of stalked him slightly ahead of him. And I think that there are a lot of people that will probably money the waters a little bit and say NFL draft conversation factors into that. The degree of difficulty of the throws that these quarterbacks able to make it factors into that.

7:11I understand it. The surroundings. I think I would take Arch's surroundings over Gunner Stockton's surroundings, given that he just added Cam Coleman, you just added a pair of thousand yard rushers from the power conference level to that team. It's a more experienced offensive line. It's your two as a starter. Like I'm high on arch. I think he could have a season in which he gets to New York or he's 4,000 yard pass or 40 touchdowns. Like all that's very much on the table, given how limited he was at times this past season. The reason I don't think he right now deserves to be considered better than Gunner Stockton. He can't throw to his left. You know, Garrett Nussmeyer was pretty banged up last year, right? Garrett Nussmeyer had 32 completions on passes left of the hash. That's the same amount as Archmaning. That's a problem. He needs to figure out that part of his game still and he could have these games where he makes ridiculous throws and makes big time plays and I'm here for that. But he needs to do some of the easier things at a higher level. He struggled with those short yardage passes, your nine yards, those short yard passes that when yours could make with his eyes closed.

8:15He didn't do that. And it's funny because he did that very well the previous year. If you're going to master the Sarkeesian offense, you have to be able to master those concepts. So right now that's why I'm a little bit more skeptical. So I'm still sitting here saying, yeah, I mean, everything is still on the table for him. And now we at least have the context of a year of seeing what he does well and what he doesn't do well. It's just the thing to say he doesn't do well right now are probably being a little bit to ignore. Yeah, I was at that game in Lexington last year and one, their luckiest hell to go with the win. But like the simple throws, like he was throwing them at people's feet, throwing in the dirt. But it was funny when you mentioned the throwing it to the left. It made me think like, you know, how many times Ryan Wingo would come on a crossing round. It was like these like guys coming across. And I wonder if that was by design or was it, you know, is that Sarke going well, we're not going to throw it left. Let's get these guys moving to the right where it's a little bit easier for him to make those throws. Yeah. And then the first game of the year, the Ohio State game where there's the, that the mist throw there was a huge, huge point in that game.

9:17And I think that there are still a lot of those moments and I arch got better. Let's not, you know, pretend like he had the same sort of frustration throughout the entire season. Like he definitely got better. I still saw that side by side. And I saw what it looked like when he and Gunner were on the same field, albeit against different defenses. But Texas was the defense that was supposed to be better. Texas was the defense coming in that I said was the best unit in all of college football on either side of the ball. And the unit I felt best about and got her stocked pretty darn well against it. And I think that he made a lot more throws that I think would probably push back on the notion that he's got limited upside. I still think the accuracy down field can get a little bit better. I don't know that Georgia necessarily had those field stretchers. I think that they could be getting that with Isaiah Canyon coming over from Georgia Tech. I think he's an interesting ad. They're going to miss the presence of Zachariah Branch. But yeah, I mean, give me Gunner in another year with Mike Bubble, a guy that I have gone back and forth on. But I'll defend the job that he did this past season as the only offensive coordinator

10:18who was a bro those award finalists and a guy that I think made Gunner Stockton better and answered a lot of those questions that we had coming in the year. 13:23I know when I try to go off the top of my head, just read the card, stupid. Anyway, what did we get into the kind of I put all the SEC quarterbacks into like my own kind of categories here. And so I wanted to take a look at kind of the categories. And we'll start with the returning starters. And in my opinion, this is the print is a pretty strong group of like, and when I say returning starters, like guys who started the majority of last year, it's not all the year. That's Archmaning, Tritidad Chambles, Marcel Reed, Lenore Sellers, Gunner Stockton, and John Matier. I mean, that's six right there, Connor. It's pretty strong. I mean, I'd put that up against, I don't know, maybe the best six from the big 10. You know, ACC, all the other conferences. What do you make of that collective as a group? It's the same story that we've had the last two years where we've gone into a season thinking quarterback depth and the SEC is really good this year. I bet there are probably three guys in that group of returning starters that we will look back on this time next year and say they were wildly disappointing. That's just kind of the way that it works.

14:24And I don't know if that's just a byproduct of the NIL era, in which so many of those returning starters in the SEC are compensated heavily. Or if that is just, hey, this situation here, this situation there, it's a case by case basis, but you know, it does feel like a year in which the SEC should have a lot of quarterbacks who are vying for first round consideration, high-smotrophy consideration. I don't necessarily think that's changing at any time soon, but there are still guys in that returning starters group that I think you would point to and say, well, they need kind of a post height bounce back. I'll be at different points of hype, you know, arch being one of them, of course, and Lunora Sellers. What's going to happen this year in year three as a starter with all of the offensive line additions as well as all the offensive line injuries that they've already endured so far in the very early stages of camp here. And what does it look like with a new offensive coordinator with Kendall Briles coming in over from TCU after they just had a total disaster last year with Mike Schule? And then John Matier, who is John Matier? Is John Matier the guy that came over from Washington State with all this hype,

15:27all this build up with Ben Arbuckle who did great things before he got hurt and was the highest trophy favorite and then kind of faded down the stretch and made a lot more turnover where he plays like, who is he? Can he clean up some of those mechanical issues that he's had? He's got to improve the footwork. I think those questions are there, but this is probably as good as one will feel about a group of returning starters of, you know, in terms of like conference wide. I think the SEC would have a slight edge over the big 10. Maybe the big 10's got a better case to have the elite guys at the top, but I think that the depth maybe one through six is a little bit more favorable to the SEC. Yeah, I just look at one more sellers with Kendall Briles now as you see, I think helps. Matier is that hand fully healthy now to see the real John Matier. And then Marcel Reed got him so bad in the playoff game, but like you just, you know, does he get back to what he was the majority of the season? So as a group, I love that group. The next group I had was new faces, but experienced starters. And that's Sam Levitt at LSU and Byron Brown at Auburn. And like we've said with a lot of these guys, Conner, the transfer portal,

16:30when they've come to the SEC, I think the question is always, will it translate? And I think people seem to be a little bit more optimistic on Sam Levitt translating in LSU, because well, frankly, Lane Kiffin and Charlie Wyser caught in the plays. As opposed to Byron Brown at Auburn, who's got a lot of skins on the wall from his years at USF, but playing a, you know, a nine game SEC schedule, how does it translate? Two, maybe the two most intriguing players in all of college football this year, Sam Levitt and Byron Brown. Sam Levitt, if he were fully healthy, I think there would be an argument that he's the preseason highest metrophy favorite. I really do. But you know that he's going to miss those spring reps. You know that he's working his way back from the Liz Frank injury. That's how you say it, right? Liz Frank, I've only seen that spell. But he's coming into a situation that is, of course, favorable. He's going to have great surroundings. They've spent a lot on that roster over $40 million, according to Brian Kelly on series as of today. This is a team that has really nice receiving options for him to be able to throw the football to.

17:32Sam Levitt needs to improve, though. He needs to not be that guy that's running for his life. He needs to be a guy that's playing on on schedule, hit that back foot, make the on time throw. That's the thing that has made the Lane Kiffin offense so tough to defend at points. And can he be that guy that truly has faith in the system? And then same thing with Byron Brown, a guy who comes over really decorated. This will be year four for him in the outskullish offense. If you've seen him play at USF, you know he brings to the table. Physically, like you know he's going to be able to take a hit in the SEC. The question is, can all of those broken tackles that he was able to force when he had this thousand yard season, 13th FPS player ever, I think the next round had that had a 3,000 passing yard season, 1,000 rushing yard season. That can all of those broken tackles translate in this conference or can he improve throwing under pressure? Because he really struggled throwing under pressure. The adjusted completion percentage I think would have been last in the SEC. And I was against competition in the Americans. So what does it look like for him in this offense?

18:34Does he look comfortable? Does he play on time? I think that's going to be really important. These two guys have New York level ceilings. But I think the floor is like is it probably lower than we care to admit? Just because there are still some pretty heavy questions that they need to answer in 2026. The third group I have is New Starter's limited experience. These are guys who haven't played a ton of football. But I'm penciling in KJ Jackson. I think it won the Arkansas job. Camario Taylor obviously, you know, big time record there, Mississippi State. Kenny Menshi, who Kentucky stole, of course, was that Notre Dame stolen from Nebraska, Missouri with Austin Simmons who was the Ole Miss starter for a couple of games. And then, like I said, a limited experience. Jared Curtis had Vanderbilt. No experience. A high school kid coming in. But all Harold did is one of the top quarterbacks. So of that group, which one kind of intrigued you most? I'm most intrigued, probably by Kenny Menshi, because I think Kenny Menshi is a massive unknown. He is known in the way, almost like Bo Purbula last year,

19:38where the most conversation that he generated came once he hit the portal. And it came from the fact that he was committed to Nebraska. And then Kentucky swooped in after missing out on the San Levit sweepstakes and was able to get him to flip in the portal. And I think that there are a lot of questions about him. Given the fact that last year, he goes into a very highly competitive quarterback battle. More old-fashioned quarterback battle that played out at Notre Dame. One that results in CJ Carr winning that job. He gets the backup job, which probably would have ended up being third string behind Steve Angelli had he stayed. Instead, he transfers to Syracuse. And Notre Dame fans really liked him. And really thought this is a guy that could have been more than capable of running the Mike Dembrock offense in South Bend. But now you have Will Stein hand picking the quarterback. And it's almost one of those things that at this point, Will Stein with how well he has done with three different quarterbacks at Oregon. He has earned the right to just make us think, oh yeah, if he does it, just trust it.

20:38It's almost like when the Ravens would draft a defensive player, and you just go, oh yeah, that guy's going to figure out like, Steelers drafting a defensive player. You're like, okay, well, that's unfair. And that just instantly makes the player better. Will Stein has very quickly developed that reputation as a quarterback, Whisperer, Guru, whatever you want to call it. And they've done a lot to be able to overhaul the pieces around him to a very new look receiver room, added some pieces to the backfield. I'm really intrigued with CJ Baxter coming over from Texas. If he can stay healthy, all of these new star-studded offensive linemen that they were able to add via the transfer portal. So Kenny Minchie is the guy that I'm like, man, we're saying a lot of these things about Joe Burrow. When he came over from Ohio, say, tell us you. And that's not to say that that is all the sudden the ceiling. But if you're going to say, hey, this guy can't do this because of X, Y, and Z. I'd say, well, we did say all those things about Joe Burrow once upon a time. Yeah, it's interesting the connection, too, I didn't make. Joe Sloan, the OC at Kentucky, was with my Dan Brock at LSU when they coached, oh, Heisman, Trophy winner, Jayden Daniel. So maybe that was a phone call, Dan Brock went,

21:41hey, Joe, you may want to get Minchie, he's pretty damn good. So we'll see, the Kentucky is like the complete unknown. I have no idea. Like, you could tell me they're going to go eight and four, nine and three, you could tell me they're going to go six and six, five and seven, I have no idea. Now obviously the Alabama one, I think it's gonna get the biggest headlines between Austin, Mack and Keel and Russell. But Florida, there in Fylo and Tremel Jones, I think a lot of people assume Aaron Fylo coming over from Georgia Tech with the familiarity and buster-falkier system. But we've been hearing some positive things about Tremel Jones. And then they tend to see one with losing Joey Aguilar to the court battle. So it's gonna be George McIntyre and Faeson Brandon,

24:47who by the way, too very heralded quarterback. It's not exactly like they're going with a couple of three stars. They're both very highly talented quarterback. So which quarterback battle kind of grabs your attention? You know, I think the Alabama one for all the obvious readings you mentioned, it's gonna generate the headlines. Austin, Mack is considered this long-term project. This is year four for him with Kayland aboard, despite the fact that I think he hasn't turned 20 yet. And he's like still 19 somehow or something like that, which is just crazy. Whatever, I don't try to define like ages and whatnot at this stage of the game. But yeah, he's, I think in a spot that, I think if you looked at this through the traditional college football end, he'd say, all right, now it's Austin next time. I think he'll and Russell's gonna win the job. I do. I don't think that a guy like that, you recruit to have him sit on the bench for two years. Yes, it works with archmaning. Archmaning is in the manning's in general, if had a different sort of philosophical approach to quarterbacking, I think you know that very well. I think that there is going to be a lot of intrigue

25:48with that battle. But the Florida situation is fascinating because Aaron Philo comes over as this guy who was very different than Haines King. You know, if you recall that Miami game a couple of years ago where they hand Miami that big upset loss and they ultimately helped derail Miami's playoff chances, they basically used the two quarterback system when Haines King was banged up because Aaron Philo could throw the football. This is a guy that broke Trevor Lawrence's passing record in the state of Georgia and was highly productive as a thrower and did not fit in the mold of Haines King. Now coming over with Buster Faulkner, you have the familiarity in the system and this is a guy that still needs to kind of figure some things out mechanically speaking. It still throws off his back foot a little bit too much for my liking, but can he settle into that? And is this a guy that all of a sudden with those reps albeit limited reps is able to show, hey, I'm ready for the starting job. I think that there are a lot of people around Florida that would like to see Tremel Jones get that fair chance that fair opportunity not just default to the guy that came over with the coordinator, but we've seen coordinator quarterback continuity is big

26:52and this day and age in the transfer portal, credit Diego Pavia and Tim Beck for being able to start that trend. So I think that battle is one that's gonna play out and then it's based on Brandon. Is he gonna win that starting job, man? Like is there a chance that we're going to look up in August and go, wow, they are going with a freshman and they're just gonna kind of lean into this and take the good with the bad. There's a possibility that they do that. And maybe it's full like 2019 Gus Melzon or something like that with Bonix as a starter new Gus. I remember calling him a bunch of times that all season Marl and I used to do that. A little bit tongue in cheek, but yeah, I think that battle is not the one that they anticipated. I think that they had hoped to be able to make a big splash in the portal with a sand lab at with being able to get Tyson from going to the NFL draft, you know, whatever the case may be. This is not the battle that Josh Hypo anticipated, but it's a very pivotal battle that could end up defining his time in Knoxville. Has it Hypo earned the benefit of the doubt though? Like I trust him, whoever he goes with, I mean, like every quarterback he's at is put up numbers. So like even Joe Milton, one great,

27:52still put up numbers, you know? Yeah, one's the last time that Josh Hypo had a bad quarterback. You know, even UCF, he didn't have bad quarterbacks. Like he just kind of finds a way to figure it out. The question is, what does all the other stuff look like? Does it look like he has a defense that is too similar to last year? Because that's something that people have talked about. The gym knows defense year one. It takes time. Now we brought over a couple of those guys from Penn State. That's going to be really beneficial, but does it look like a team that has an identity? Because I think too much last year, it felt like Tennessee was just this hollow team. And I say hollow knowing that you shouldn't scoff at eight wins necessarily, but not all eight wins seasons are creatively. They're just not. In Tennessee, by virtue of not beating an FPS team with a winning record, felt like it had a hollow season. Lost those rivalry games while they beat Florida in the swamp at end of that street, but they lost the two big rivalry games that were against teams that mattered on their schedule. And I think that there is a sense that if Josh Hypole

28:54has a six and six type season, where all of the sudden the stands are empty, dating what it's going to have a decision to make. He's going to have a decision to make about a guy that's got a $27 million buyout that had his contract made improved four different times during his time at Tennessee. So what does all that look like? It's fascinating. And I think that this quarterback battle will have a huge stay in that. That's crazy. I was reading a PC other day. Somebody had Hypole in the hot sea. I'm like, on the hot sea, I guess. But Tennessee fans, they've, he raised the expectation. So fair and fair, you know, you're, you're, you're the guy. So he is Conner of course, you can check out the OG kickoff with Conner and will you guys are cracking out the, what, a couple episodes a week now, right? Two episodes a week.
