3:10keeping this contract in mind because our brain has to be rewired to the sort of money that is now available with the salary cap jumps, including the big one this year and of course, expected big ones over the next few years. We've been discussing this all summer and I got to say I'm a little surprised Blake because you know, given how the connox have been cutting costs this off season, given our understanding that look ownership is not as interested in spending to the cap during the early years of the rebuild as they have have been in the past. But of course, this deal only kicks in this next season and he gets under the September 15th line. And that is a very important date. And you wouldn't be surprised if over the next 10 days, you see more of these long term extensions eight year extensions because of course, after September 50th, the max term slides to seven years from eight. He's delighted to be here long time. Let's hear from the man

4:13himself. Here's connox defenseman Zeve Williamson. He wanted eight years. It was pretty easy for me. I think when they came with the offer, you know, was in a hard decision to make and, you know, I think personally I wanted to be here for eight years. I didn't want it to be shorter and, you know, I'm really glad. I love the city. I love the fan base. You know, I love what where this organization's going. And, you know, like I said, I want to be a connox. I want to be here and hopefully, you know, the end goal is obviously a Stanley Cup and, you know, hopefully, you know, bring that back one day and, and you know, for all the years, just really give the fans and everyone here in Vancouver something to cheer for. Pretty easy decision. He says, hey, Zeve, you want $75 million? Yeah, I imagine it was a pretty easy decision. Like, yeah, I mean, we're going to talk about the gamble on the connox. I'm sure a lot. But, you know, there was a gamble on his side too. I don't think he's going to be in the Quin Hughes-Kelmacher

5:15tier at all in his career. But, you know, him, Zee Boyum, in his brain, he might think he can nibble at the edge of that tier. And if you do believe that, you are undercutting yourself, particularly in the last few years of this deal. You know, like put yours, we're talking, he's under contract till nine years from today. So you think about how good this player is going to be, theoretically, in seven more years, heck in six more years, him and his prime, 26 year old defenseman, based on economy and everything, man, like that, that players can be worth more than $9 million a year. So there is money being left on the table. I'm, I'm, I'm sure they justify it. Sanwell, we're gaining money big time in the next couple of years, because our, our resume doesn't speak to a $9 million dollar player just yet. And I suppose that's even, but Dave determined the math works out, I guess. And, and I question it a little

6:19bit. I, I question, I question a little bit on both sides, but from his, that's my question from his side is, are you leaving a bit of money on the table at the back end here? He turns 21 in December. He is now under contract until July 1st, 2035, everybody. So just you know, galaxy brain that for a second. Yeah. When this, when this contract begins at the start of next season, 27-28, it will be an 8.3% of the cap will be eaten up by Zibweim. We don't have exact cap numbers through the eight years needless to say, but declining to something in the realm of 5.5% when it's all said and done. And of course, in the early years of this contract, we suspect things can change. Maybe a bunch of young players discuss this with J-PAT actually on Thursday. Maybe there's a world where all these young players take massive steps forward in the next couple of years. But if you're operating under the

7:26premise that the Vancouver can ox probably aren't going to be very good over the next two to three years as they begin this rebuild, really the cap space doesn't matter in those years, right? Blake? Because we know they're not going to spend close to the cap. We don't know. We know they're not going to need cap space and maxing that out to get every last veteran at the deadline to be a playoff team or a contender. But you referenced it. This becomes one of the bigger bets in Vancouver, can ox franchise history, even in a rising cap environment. He had 26 points in 76 games in his rookie NHL season split between the Minnesota wild and Vancouver can ox. Of course, he came over last December as the key piece, one of four in the Queen Hughes trade to the wild. So he's not yet the point producer that his profile begets. And of course, he struggled defensively last year as just about every player did under Adam Futscreen and react.

8:29System. So philosophically, this new management team, Ryan Johnson and the Siddeen twins as co-presidents, they have revealed themselves. We talked to Jeff Merrick this week where he said, you know, there's a little bit, there's a bit of a difference between, you know, coloring between the lines and actually creating art, you know, sitting there on a blank slate. This is more creating art than it is coloring between the lines, right? It shows, it reveals something about this management group. They're making a bet. It shows that it is on trend with locking up young talent early and for term before that talent blossoms and becomes more expensive. And what a bet it is. I mean, Blake, we got a text yesterday from somebody in the league who said, if you had told me, William was signing for eight years, I would have thought the number began with a six or a seven. I was on golf course with a friend yesterday, a big hockey fan who I said, oh, William, eight years. And he said, seven something, eight something. I was like, how about nine something? Whoa,

9:32that was a little bit jarring. So here's Ryan Johnson in explaining this. And even he said, not too long ago, he would have had trouble getting his brain around this. I'll be honest with you. If he had asked me five years ago, if I would ever have considered something like this, my answer would have been immediately know. But I didn't want to get caught up in some archaic thinking of this. I wanted to get aggressive enough to knowing where the landscape is going. Some of these contracts that are going out is that if we could sit and really have a conversation about Zeeve the player, but also the person, and we could get to a number that maybe we felt that is maybe admittedly overpaying right now, but being a really good deal down the road. We were aggressive in exploring this as much as we could to see if we could get something done.

10:38Zeeve with Kurt Overhart and his group, they were excellent to deal with in the process was very good. Well, that's a tremendous statement on a few fronts. Like number one, the honesty of it off the top. You know, no way he would have done this not long ago. Overpaying right now, which I think is also fair. But I think the line that will resonate with Kinex fans and particularly because the last two management groups were a little bit out of step with NHL on trend business. Certainly the Jim Benning regime was, but even the Jim Rutherford regime to a degree was a courage of their convictions. We're going to do it our way sort of management style. This is very much on the new wave of NHL thinking. And I think for a lot of Kinex fans, they will be quite pleased to see they have a management group of people they know who are going down that pathway as opposed to carving out their own.

11:39Hey, I mean, even in the here and now and I still do agree he has been overpaid for the next couple of seasons for sure. Well, I wouldn't even say that. I'll only guarantee the first year because next year's on the ELC. And I think that by the end of two years from this date, he's probably a pretty good defenseman. That's right. So he's been overpaid in the here and now, but here we do have inflation already making its impact. Like this gaudy number is still less than half of Kail MacArthur's like in the here and now. So he needs to be half the player of Kail MacArthur to make his nine and a half million. I think he can do that. Like I think that is definitely the sweet spot in 12 months time. That's all he needs to be. And remember, this is the post COVID bump. This is the okay business is sort of back to the usual bump of the salary cap. Well, what is also some of the news that we're hearing? Atlanta's guaranteed now. They're going to be the

12:40second team in expansion Houston's coming in for sure as well. Expansion fees galore. We know what that does to hockey related revenue as well. The next five years are going to see rapid acceleration of the salary cap. We know that now with it with expansion, we can guarantee that because it's just free money. So I think it's safe to say that this is going to be at worst an average contract. I think for the Vancouver connects. I think that they are going to come on the end of things where minus the obvious catastrophic outcomes of injury. Like what are the chances there's another alias peterson? And I mean that derogatorally with a bit of a wink in that like an up and coming young player that just forgets how to play the game. We're going to have to buy twice in a row. Like I really don't. So it is a gamble for the connox. I actually think it's less of a gamble than

13:47we might take. If he goes down that road, God help us all. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Vancouver can stand as a city if that if that transpires. Okay, let's take a sampling of what folks around league are saying about this. Here's Shayna Goldman with the athletic who tweets the number on the William extension rightfully has some sticker shock and risk given how unproven he still is. But there's a path to him being worth this, especially as the salary kept continues to rise. Just feels a little early for this kind of leap on a deal starting in 27-28. And there's the player card on William as per the athletic. Here's Jay fresh, Jay fresh hockey. William is a young offensive defenseman who showed some very promising puck moving ability and flashes of his hockey IQ as a rookie. Still a lot of growing to do in other areas to become a true top pairing or even number one

14:47defenseman. Yeah, I mean, when he talks about those flashes of hockey IQ and ability, Blake, like we saw it right out of the shoot right after you're right in his first game as a Vancouver canock after he came over from the from the Minnesota wild in the trade for Quinn Hughes. They played the New Jersey Devils. William was a goal and an assist. It was two points in 19 minutes, nearly 20 minutes of hockey. He was a power play catalyst that night. You put a couple of shots on goal. May very well be his best game actually as a Vancouver canock or at least one of his best games. Believe it was his only multi point effort as a Vancouver canock after the trade. So, yeah, we saw the flashes immediately. There was some good and some bad after that. 15:52the shifting cap environment is such that bets like this are generally generally exclamation mark best practice. But there's a level of risk here worth acknowledging to perhaps more so than with like bets this summer. And look how good remember is age here, Matt. We do have to remember that this guy turned 20 in the middle of last year turning 21 in December. Like if this guy was a college player, he's probably coming out after this coming year. You know, like if you're not if you're not a top five pick, he was a college player, but he gave him to us. Yeah, so, he's so young. Like he's, you know, if you were getting this player at the age of 21, you wouldn't bat an eyelash and think, oh, he's coming to us so late. And this guy's already got a 26 point season basically under his belt as a Vancouver can. I think him coming into the league in the playoffs, whatever it is, however, you want to describe that a year ago, 14 months ago.

16:53I think put him in our brain early. And so it feels like he's older than he is. It feels like, oh, he should be arcing up better than that was his rookie year. We just experienced. And I'm not a huge Z. William truther, like I don't think again, I don't think he is anywhere close to tempting the McCarr Hughes tier of player. But again, you don't need them to and and nine and a half million dollars. You don't need him to be striving for that. You just need to be a very good player. And I think that he's on track to be that at the very least. I agree. I'll get more into the analysis when we get into our poll question here in a second. But first, let's get back to Ryan Johnson, who would say he was impressed with the player that he got to know after the trade from Minnesota last year. But he's really excited about the type of player that Z. William can become. Here's the

17:55Conucks general manager on maxing out the term for William. We felt strongly in Z. It is pedigree. He's a proven winner. We know we weren't this contract isn't about Z. The player today. Or tomorrow. It's where we see him in three, four, and five years. And so it was something that we felt if if both sides could come on agreement and make a commitment to each other, there was something we'd be excited to get done. Yeah, they talked also talked about how he's been a proven winner. He has had success at the, it was two years at the University of Denver, including a national championship season when he was a freshman and the second youngest player in all of division one hockey's had success with the United States at the international level as well. And look for his part. And he has said this from the jump. And he really burrowed himself into

19:02the hearts and minds of Conucks fans last season when he became a stronger and stronger voice, particularly post trade deadline where many both internally and externally were identifying William as part of the, I don't want to call it culture change yet, but the shift and the vibes that we were all talking about that the dressing room had to change. It became a better place to be. It became more healthier environment, if I can use a Ryan Johnson word for young players and on the go forward basis. And part of that was the reality of everybody in the room knowing what this is and what this isn't and what it isn't is a Stanley Cup contender and what it is is a rebuilding team whose future is bright or at least that's how they see it. Here's, well, he's a core piece of this rebuild now. This extension solidifies that. Here's Zeeb William on being a key piece of the Conucks operation going forward. Yeah, it's amazing. I mean, I think it's really special that

20:09we're all in the position that we're in and we get to dictate what the Vancouver Conucks look like, moving forward and what our seasons look like and wins and losses and the culture and everything. So I think that's a really unique position for all of us to be in and it's just awesome that I get to share that with all the guys. Yeah, it's answers like that that really endeared them to Conucks fans. Yeah, I mean, a good leader, good speaker. Could you envision him wearing the C someday potentially? Maybe he's that kind of a player. But yeah, I mean, I think the fact that he he fits into what the Siddheens picture as a true professional, I think that probably didn't hurt. His case to get this money by all accounts, the negotiation was a pretty easy one. The fact that it gets done this early, I think speaks to that a little bit. Obviously, they had the pressure point of the eight year deadline coming up here in the middle of September and that

21:11and that met something to the Conucks certainly. I mean, it can't be, we outlined at the top. This is a long time. This is this is a long, long time 2035. Oh my god. Like, I don't think a kid who's 20 can fathom got nine years from the moment. It almost reminds me, you know, we've had some fun with this. How like the USGA has picked the courses for the US open up until like 2050. And it's just like a little bit ridiculous. When I say 2035 for a hockey player, it sort of gives me the same vibe, right? Like really that far into the future. Here's Ryan Johnson again, about that environment that changed last year. The Buyam was a catalyst for that. And I love the part of this answer he says he wanted eight years to do it properly. Here's a here's RJ. He brought such an energy and a leadership type quality that you really don't find in a lot of

22:1520 year olds, which is astonishing. And so yes, it was a lot about his play and where we see he can go. Like I said, he's 20 years old, 21 in December, and understand and didn't need. I just had a conversation about it is that this is this is now a journey and we're going to support him and there's going to be adversity and there's going to be ups and downs, but he's going to he's going to make mistakes and he's going to have stretches, but but this is we know we're very confident in what he's going to be as a player, but even ultimately a lot of this commitment is who he is as a person, his ability impact address room and his overall desire to win is extremely evident. And so this this yes, we are committing to him, but beseeve really in his own words wanted to make a commitment to the city, to the province, to the fans. That's he he didn't want anything other than eight years so that he could do this and do it properly.

23:18Do we had properly that was a good good answer. There was a lot of good answers actually yesterday from both of these gentlemen because they're both pretty good communicators and look, there's been a degree of honesty with bliem since he got here both with regards to himself, both with regards to the task at hand for the Vancouver kiddox like he has spoken about the rebuild in the long term perhaps a little more readily than your typical hockey player would right because the typical hockey player I believe in the guys in this room we can be competitive get back in the race things like that. You weren't hearing that sort of messaging with Zebeweem he he undersed to it the big picture of the project at 19 right like so he this is a guy that that knows that he dipped his toe in earlier than most like this is not a lot of people that start their career as a teenager even in today's day and if we're we trust the young players a lot earlier like starting at 19 is really young he knows he's got an awful lot of time he does not need to be

24:21impatient and he knows that he got in worst case of the ground floor he might have got he might have jumped in on the first floor a little bit with a little bit of a head start and you know he can see the young players around him and and I think he he's probably got a pretty realistic you know like the realistic group of fans however bigger percentage point they are in the overall but that you know that that there's two to three years maybe of of finding identity and finding some wins but you know in the grand scheme of things if he's got nine years left as a connock and he needs to buy time for two and a half more years I think he thinks that's a worthwhile gamble to make. Yeah I mean I think for me I don't think anyone's going to put more pressure on themselves than myself and you know I've always believed in myself and you know what I can do in my abilities and you know the staff we have here and you know the people around this organization I think you know only good things are heard to come and you know I think you know pressure is also a privilege in a way and you know to be able to you know have that means you're probably doing something right and you know it's something you know I take as a challenge and you know try to do my best with. That's where the CLC year I think is helpful for him in that you know if he has a 32

27:35point year like it's an improvement that's not a wild improvement you can still point and well that's still but so we're with the rookie year deal like a year he's not expected to be a superstar just yet so he's got this one year where if he exceeds if he has a 50 point year then every calms down says okay he's he's on track if he doesn't it's okay this is supposed to be another one of his learning years in his rookie deal so I think this is a good year for him to to find himself. Yeah and those you on visual platforms there's the player card on Zeeb William his year to year totals a couple years at the US national team development program in Michigan of course he comes from San Diego California hardly a bastion of hockey talent in the Vancouver conucks in the unique position they have a couple of San Diego and since he's William and thatred Amco who made their way out of south south southern California like down near Mexico California and those amateur

28:35youth ranks up into well I mean just even for someone like that making the US national team development program right against all those kids from Michigan Minnesota Massachusetts so there's a couple years there we mentioned the two years that the University of Denver where he was better than a point per game player and a national champion then he gets it dropped in Blake mentioned that to those four playoff games with the Minnesota wild in the Stanley Cup playoffs 2020 five registers his first NHL point in the playoffs and then look it was 14 points in 31 games in Minnesota and without a ton of offensive opportunity right like that's a pretty good blue line in Minnesota including the youngster Brock favor like they had guys who were getting more favorable zone starts and minutes and power play opportunities than Zeeb William did in his 31 games with the wild to start last season the trade to the conox and it turns out to be 12 points in 45 games

33:53can play heavy minutes and tough matchups he then said to me okay if he doesn't quite get there maybe a Morgan Riley type player or buddy from West van who at his height was a tremendous offensive player power play quarterback really helped the Leafs there maybe wasn't the most perfect defender but was still darn darn good and good enough to hold down first pair minutes and then he said to me look the low end here is a player like she and Gostis bear where yeah he's an offensive catalyst I mean it's undeniable the offensive traits that he brings to the ice each and every night but a guy who isn't able to hold down the heavy minutes and the tough matchups and maybe has to be sheltered a little bit and play on a a second pair now I know you want to take on the Gostis bear thing because of course he's a Stanley Cup champion now and was nearly a point per game player this past season with the Carolina Hurricanes but I think it's fair to say you know he bounced around a

34:59little bit more early in his career and was viewed as more of like an empty cowries a little bit type point producing defenseman yeah and I get that and we've had like long ago months ago we we brought this up as sort of the the low end caution for for Zibouyum and I agreed with it at the time but you know like a upon further review you know Shane Gostis bear has got like a 65 point season under his belt you know like if this is the worst case scenario I don't know how terrible it is for the Vancouver Connacks it's a damn good player I mean it's a second-tier defense right his chief contract was a six year 27 million dollar deal signed with the flyers back in 2017 well guess where that contract started in terms of cap percentage it was at 6% already and and that you know that's an accomplished player at that point then already had a 65 point season under his belt and he was making 6% of of the cap so I I think again there's a gamble here

36:08I'm not saying this is without risk but I think it's a given where this league is headed and I think it's on a bit of a collision it's the league itself is trying to push the oval they're trying to make the cap as big as they possibly can you know agents are out they're saying where our cap is way below where it should be you know it's more players and agents than the league but yeah I hear what you say I mean the league likes it in terms of it being able to say oh look at how much our business is growing year to year but yes right right I would suspect there are some he perceived they want to be perceived as one of the big boys too so the more their players are being paid it's sort of yeah we're legit yeah that absolutely helps them out when you see the money that's being thrown around baseball basketball and football these days I would also bet there are some nervous people at the league office and including some of the governors of lower revenue teams about where this cap is going I mean we've had this conversation Blake like we're swiftly here going to get into a world where you have a number of teams that cannot

37:15justify financially spending to the cap based on what they're bringing or not bringing in in terms of local revenues when you talk about ticket sales sponsorship local meteorites and all of that put together so look there was a time when the Vancouver canucks had an economic advantage in the gillis era a that they could easily spend to the cap they weren't worried about that when it came to P and L P and L's because their business was booming at the time but also they could go out and spend in areas outside of the cap and justify that so it was a big economic advantage once upon a time for the canucks and if this rebuild goes well and Roger Serena is full and they're able to do the sort of business that we saw them doing 15 years ago I suspect that economic advantage will return because I would bet that there are a number of clubs in the NHL that aren't going to be able
