Separate the First Feeling From Anger | Master the Moment Before You React
About this episode
Anger often feels immediate.
Something happens. You feel the surge. Your body reacts. Your mind starts building a case. And before you realize it, the first feeling has become a full emotional reaction.
But Stoic practice asks you to create space between the impression and your response.
Epictetus teaches that when an impression arrives, we should not immediately allow it to carry us away. Instead, pause and examine it before giving it our agreement.
That first feeling may be automatic.
The anger that follows does not have to be.
Someone insults you. Notice the sting.
Someone frustrates you. Notice the tension.
Someone disappoints you. Notice the impulse to retaliate.
Then stop.
You don't have to deny what you feel. You have to separate the feeling from the judgment that turns it into anger.
The pause is where your freedom begins.
Don't let the first emotion make the decision.
Observe it.
Question it.
Then choose your response.
