Today is Monday, March 2nd, and Pillsie, the Ottawa Senators are 6-1-1 in their last eight games, and there's a lot that seems sustainable. Yeah, definitely. I mean, it's crazy to think there's 6-1-1 with kind of the temperature of the fan base, but that's pretty good for your last eight games. Now, it's unfortunate. It seems like every other team has similar records, or at least isn't dropping too many points. The Detroit Red Wings just won their game this afternoon, so they stay pace in the wild card race there.

2:06But the sends are doing everything they can, really, to at least be comfortably in the mix, which me saying comfortably in the mix doesn't necessarily invoke a lot of excitement, but there's still no decent spot. Well, and they've really cleaned it up all around the rank. Like you look at it and all the numbers during this stretch, of course, there's 6-1-1. The numbers are going to be good, right? But in these eight games, they scored 30 goals. And of course, credit to the beat down on the Vegas Golden Knights. Can't take down away from Ottawa. Seven in that game certainly helps. But my favorite part, they've only allowed more than two goals once. And it was in their regulation loss against Carolina, where they allowed four goals on 19 shots. So they've got a two goals for everyone goal against on this stretch, like 30 goals for 15 against. And my favorite stat, they're averaging less than 20 shots against in that span.

3:06Averaging Pilsy, that's incredible. Yeah, it's amazing. And Lena Salvar certainly has not been spectacular, but 913 save percentage against Toronto, 900 save percentage at the game before. Like we set the bar quite low for him and and all other sends goalies for that matter. And they've been stepping over that bar or at least being at that bar. So if they can continue to have goal tenning B, just fine. Suppress shots like this and score goals and bunches, guys like Drake Batherson, Dylan Cousins, they're going to have success. And the penalty kill two Ross perfect two for two up against the Leafs penalty kill is 86.7% in their last eight games. And I mentioned the shot. So it's 19.9. So really, really nice for me to say under 20 shots a game, you know who's second is the Dallas stars. They're averaging 21 and a half shots against per game. They're 7 and 0 over that steps.

4:09The third fewest shots against per game since January 25th, this stretch that I'm referring to is the Redwings and they're at 25. Five whole shots more per game than Ottawa. What they're doing is incredible. So anybody who at times was frustrated and wanted to take it out on somebody and put Travis Green on the piñata for it, you can't do it. The way that he has this team defending is truly incredible right now. Yeah, absolutely. And I think we've been saying it for most of the season. I think maybe I had a couple times where I was like, all right, maybe you need to change something, just to change something back when things were looking very frustrating. But for the most part, I feel like on this show, we've been trying to shed the light on the advanced analytics and all the different areas that this team is performing very well. And how you have to give credit to the coaching staff who have been able to get these guys to buy into those systems. And I think Ross, you even have to give extra credit to the coaching staff because it's one thing to buy into a system and a style of play when it works in your winning games.

5:19That's easy. But when it's working and you're not winning games, it wouldn't be that crazy for the players to be like, all right, we're doing what you're asking. We're doing it right and we're still not winning games like maybe we need to change from the structure and style you've got, but they've maintained it. And the sense posted that speech that Travis Green gave in the locker room. I forget when that was I think right for the Olympic break and basically I'm paraphrasing here, but he was like, don't listen to the outside noise. You guys keep playing like this and we're going to win some F and hockey games, something like that. And he's right. Well, I hope the Sands are still downloading locked on senators every day. They don't have to listen to the outside noise, but we'd appreciate the downloads to keep coming in that subscription going to hit the bell for notifications, Ian Mendez and the rest of the Sands staff. Absolutely. Now, look, imagine telling a Senators fan before this stretch that there would be an eight game segment where their goals against average was the best in the National Hockey League.

6:24No, they're averaging since January 25th, 1.88 goals against per game. The next best team is Columbus at 2.29. Oh, wow. I got stats in every single pocket and I'm wearing a hoodie with a nice kangaroo pouch in here. And I'm just pulling out every stat that is showing how elite the Senators have been over this stretch. The offense, they're averaging the 11th most goals per game. They're power play 6 best in the National Hockey League. Their penalty kill is 8th best. Let's go where you look. The Senators have seemingly figured it out. Now, the question is, can they take it into a barn and against a team that they've extremely struggled against over the last half decade? Basically, since McDavid and Drysaddle were doing whatever the hell they wanted to during the COVID season, this is going to be a true test tomorrow when Ottawa takes on an Edmonton Euler's team that is pissed off because they're scoring a time, but they're allowing more.

7:25They're goal-tending is what Ottawa's was earlier this season. They can't get a save. It's not part of hockey. Tristan Jari's been brutal for them and I'm looking at this game now. And this is going to be the true test for Ottawa's defensive dominance because he got two of the best players in the league, Ornery, and they just made a move to bolster. Their blue line will get to it next segment where as a player, I was interested in for Ottawa to acquire. Well, Edmonton pulls off the first trade of deadline week, but it's likely Conor Murphy is going to be in the lineup for them tomorrow. Chicago was in Winnipeg today, so easy flight to get over to Edmonton. I'm just looking at this game as like almost worth two. If you can beat Edmonton on the way west where you've got three more games after this one, it's going to do wonders for the confidence level of this group as a whole because trade deadline week. It's always awkward. You talk to players off the record like they're thinking about it. They're human at the end of the day and when you're on a road trip,

8:25you got to think a few guys maybe packed an extra suitcase to throw under the plane. So I think that if you can find a way to win tomorrow, this team is a whole might take an exhale saying, there's a strong likelihood that we're just going to add and not take away from the roster that we have here. Let's build towards that. I think it could be a galvanizing point for this group. Yep, I like your approach. I can't say I'm aligned with you and that's that's not very positive pills. You have me for me. It's more like, okay, let's see what happens up against Edmonton. You'll hope to have a good effort, but moving forward, you need to be able to beat up on a flame team that is likely going to sell off more parts. You need to beat the Seattle crack in kind of a measuring stick team. They're right in that bubble of being in the mix for a playoff spot too. You need to be able to defeat one of the most down bad franchises in the entire league and the Vancouver conucks, shout out locked on conucks. They're going through it right now.

9:25So for me, the Euler's game is almost just, all right, let's see what happens. And then we've got expectations moving forward. But again, I think you've got the right approach there. And maybe tomorrow for a game day preview, you can height me up and keep some of those stats coming. And maybe I'll join you on that attitude. Well, here's the comparison that I'll make. And it was a bit different of a time in the season. The one I'm about to reference was earlier. But remember how Carolina was a house of horrors. Last year, that kind of flipped the vibe when they went into there and won. And I'll add on to it, Ross, our top four of scary teams. The Edmonton Eilers, the Carolina Hurricanes, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Colorado Avalanche. And all three of those teams, the Ottawa Senators have shown good, at least better up against, especially that line change away from Carolina for getting at least the point. Yeah, and like Vegas, that was laughable. I was watching that game and like, I can't believe this is my Ottawa Senators

10:27up against the Vegas Golden Knights. And then Colorado, after they embarrassed you and were destroying you so bad, you sign a goalie off his couch mid game. You end up finding a way to beat them as well. So that's all right. I'm, you're already got you 24 hours earlier. The hook, the hooks in the mouth, the Ross of this fish. And you're, you're real in me in here. That was, that was good. Thank you. And how about the way that Ottawa battled back from down to nothing earlier on this season gets Edmonton and lost that game in overtime, but they were down to nothing going to the third period. And then it was being bombed when Ottawa scored 13 seconds into the third period on a power play. And then Shabbat scored a minute and a half later, his first of the year to get Ottawa tied. Now, in overtime, didn't go Ottawa's way. It was an absolute clap bomb from Jake Walman on a power play in the extra frame that won that game for them. But if you can take three at a four points off the oilers this year and you sweep the biggest gold in nights and you have that big win like you mentioned

11:28against Colorado, I think this is a really positive sign for the senators. We know sense fans are going to be buzzing. I've seen lots of fans making the trip to Edmonton, including our guy Corey from Bellville made the trip. Love to see that going to be a nice pop in that building. We hope if and when the Ottawa senators can come through with a big performance. A big performance would also indicate to Steve Steyos that this team is ready to compete when they're ready to compete. As he said, well, this would go a big way in Steyos's old stomping grounds where he represented the oilers his first front office job. He played in a Stanley Cup final as an offenseman for this team. This game has a lot of meaning in my opinion for the Ottawa senators. Let's turn our attention to the trade portion of this show. And it's the start of deadline week. 15:35Connor Murphy would have been a great addition. A defensive defenseman who is a veteran and plays a lot of ways. The senators are looking for in terms of a partner for Thomas Shabbat. He gets traded to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a 2028 second round pick. And in the deal, the hawks are retaining half of of Murphy's $4.4 million deal. So the oilers get him at a $2.2 million cap it. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. If you were Steve Stales, Pillsy, would you have pulled the trigger on the exact same move? Well, the oilers centers do have their 2028 second round pick. So that would have been available to them. I think I would want to Ross, but in hindsight, I'm not sure just because I'm pretty convinced this is a rental. I think Connor Murphy is probably looking at the UFA's and thinking, hey, this could be a time for me to cash in.

16:35I'll be one of the top right shot defensive defenseman UFA's available. I can get a big ticket here. And if it didn't come with an extension, I don't know if Steve Stales would want to do that. Edmonton, obviously, in the market for rentals, they're just trying to do whatever they can to a P's, Connor McDavid on his short extension that he signed. And they don't really care about 2028, or if Connor Murphy is going to resign or not, probably. So I think this deal made sense for them. It was a really good deal. I would have considered it, but I don't think Steve Stales would have pulled the trigger on it. But what I do like about this deal is this proves what the insiders, in particular, Elliot Friedman have been saying, this is a buyer's market, in my opinion, that's a good deal for Connor Murphy at 50% retained. If 2028 picks are of the essence, I would love to be moving off of that. I mean, you look at next year, finally,

17:36the senators will have a full complement of their own picks. They just don't have a seventh rounder in that one. That was a part of the deal to move up in the third round at last year's draft. I believe that one was still select Blake Vanick. And if you look at it from Ottawa's perspective, obviously, this year's a bit of a mismatch, where Ottawa doesn't have their own first or second. They do a Buffalo second, and then they have three third round picks, but no fourth round pick. I'm curious to know, like, maybe you go, if you're looking for a fish a little bit bigger than Connor Murphy, and if there's no salary retained, what could a 2026 third round pick and a 2027 or eight second round pick get you? Like, I think if the senators can move farther ahead with draft picks, I think that would be a great way to go in terms of assets to go out the door. My other thing with Ottawa, and it depends again, what kind of fish you're looking to get on the hook. If you can convince a team that any of Blake Montgomery, Javon Moore, or Gable-Ison, could be a player for them,

18:37I think that would be a good way to go. I'm very against taking away from the roster. We keep hearing, like Bruce Garryock reported, that teams are asking for Ridley Gregg. I mean, you'd have to get an offer that blows your socks off. Like, listen to the numbers. We just listen the first segment. This team is playing unbelievable hockey right now. It just feels like it would be such a weird time to cut in to the roster that you have right now outside of. And look, Jensen's been really good the last two games. Since coming back from the break, he's been good. But if you have to make the money work, that would obviously be the guy who you'd be looking to move as a pending UFA and a guy who's been up and down as his play goes this season. But if you can add a guy to this team and not give up something off your roster, I think that would be a really, really smart way for Steve Stales to approach this deadline. Yeah, and two more guys. I'll throw into the asset pile Ross Xavier Borgo. Yeah, that's a former first-round pick. 23 years old having a career year in the AHL. Maybe that's someone contending teams would be like,

19:37well, he's kind of on the late side of being a prospect. But he's on the early side of being NHL ready. And maybe he's someone that can fit into our bottom six. He's played two games for the sends this year. So that's someone I would include there. And then also, a Jordan Donovan. He's been having a really nice season, not as ready as Xavier Borgo. But that's a guy I think teams could look at. They could understand the potential there. Obviously, son of Sean Donovan. So you got some legacy aspect there, a kid that's growing up around hockey. So those would be two guys also that I think could have some trade value around the league. Yeah, and I think with Borgo especially, if you're trading with a team who's a rebuilder, it would be a good look for them at Borgo to play every day in the NHL. And you'd be doing Borgo a solid too. If there's a team that thinks that he can fit into their roster every day right now, I think it could be a win-win situation there. I got a funny quote here from Pierla Bruns, most recent article talking about the deadline. And of note, we know that the playoff salary cap

20:39is now the same as the regular season. So no more LTIR and then stack up, have a hundred and twenty million dollar salary in the playoffs. That is going to create some headaches for teams trying to make moves or close to the cap. But the other one, and I actually didn't know about this, you can no longer do double retention. Remember, they'd flip someone there and you give them a draft pick and they'd eat half your salary. That's been outlawed. So you're going to have to be able to make things work. You can check out our interview two weeks ago with Brian from Capwages. He explained that Ottawa can add up to a six million dollar player right now without touching anything off their roster. But here's what one NHL team executive said to Pierla Bruns. My current take is that there's not a lot of supply, but there's also little demand for what's being made available. So it's kind of a funny spot to be where maybe there's not a whole lot of guys that are moving the needle. And again, it can all change within a phone call. So we'll see how Steve Steyos attacks the deadline. This will obviously be a conversation throughout the week here unlocked on senators tomorrow.

They've been doing this all season long, and now it's time for the big deal. Is it coming today? Is it coming Friday? The deadline is 3 p.m. this Friday. And if you look at the top names available, Pilsy, there's a right-shot defenseman that we haven't talked about at all. And that's just in fall with St. Louis Blues,

23:44who I had kind of considered as an offenseman to an extent. But I'm starting to think that's not necessarily the case. He's obviously got in his history 15 years in the league for him. He's an offense first defenseman, but I think I may have undervalued the defensive aspect of his game. It's not brilliant, but I do think that it is something that could fit with the Ottawa Senators. According to the athletic, they do their player ranking offensive value, defensive value. He's got a plus 2.4 defensive value. And if you put it in terms of how he would have impact the lineup, I think this might be something that could interest Steve Steyos. Do I think it's the best fit? Not necessarily, but it knocks off two needs for Ottawa. A right-shot defenseman and Steve Steyos, by all accounts, wants a player with a little bit of term. Falk is signed next season as well, at $6.5 million. What are your thoughts on Justin Falk? Yeah, I don't think he's the guy, Ross. I do agree. I think maybe the general consensus of him

24:47is he's more an offensive guy, but he does have other aspects to his game. He's got a minor no trade clause. I'm trying to see what that includes. A 15 team no trade list. So that covers quite a bit there. I got to think that Ottawa might be on that, unfortunately. And the 6.5 is a little rich for my liking. It is front loaded, though. So they're going to be paying less in real money next season than his cap it is. I'll go a different way, Ross. Oh, this is someone that we haven't mentioned. And I think we already know this is the perfect fit. And maybe a house could be going up for sale in your neighborhood. Oh, why not bring back Dylan Demello? He's signed for three more years at $4.9 million. Oh, we got to find a partner for Thomas Shabbat. Who can play with Thomas Shabbat? How about somebody that already did it?

25:48Dylan Demello. He's a well-liked guy in the locker room. I'm just looking at his stats. Yeah, they're good. Dude, on a bad win of peg team, 59 games, three goals, 14 assists, and a plus nine. Like, to be having that kind of season this year, and you get the term two more years at $4.9 million, and two extra years I think is perfect, Ross, because at that point, Carter Yakimchuk might be, hopefully, is a full-time NHLR. Artem Zubes contract. I believe has two more years left, right? Jordan Pence. We'll see what kind of deal happens with him. I would, I mean, why not tell Winnipeg, okay? We gave you Dylan Demello rental. We'll toss you back a third-round pick. Maybe we'll even throw an NHLR. Yeah, we'll give you two. Well, we'll give you interest. Inflation on that. That's a good, good return. I think that's something that I would seriously consider there.

26:48Now, he is going to be 33 years old, May 1st. So the two extra years term, might look a little bad at the end. But it's not like Dylan Demello is a guy you're like, we're signing him for his speed, and he's going to slow down. It's more of the hockey IQ and the defensive style and the chemistry he already has with Shabbat. I think that he might be near the top of my trade bait board. He has a 10 team no trade list, but as an Ontario guy, and he loves playing in Winnipeg as well. So that might be, hey, I want to stick it through. This is just a down year. I want to be back there. How's the next season? I got to, I got to modify no trade clause. Oh, I'm not seeing that on calf wages. Okay. Well, yeah, yeah. I got to hear 10 team no trade, modified no move clause. He's making $5 million in real money this year next year, and then 4.1 in real money the final year of the deal. I'm, I could be sold on Dylan Demello for sure. That's an interesting one. I hadn't thought of that. Now, his name's not on any of these trade bait boards, though,

27:50which is kind of interesting with the position the jets are in. But I do think a lot of people in Winnipeg believe this is just a one-off when you have Connor Halibuk signed for five years. They've got a lot of guys locked up. And they might actually be moving off or a shot defenseman in Luke Shen who's a free agent. So just numbers wise, maybe they want to keep them just for that. And again, great. You're going to Nick Jensen. Yeah. Hey, Jensen and two thirds for Dylan Demello. I heard Jensen and a third gets you a Jacob Chikren. So yeah, exactly. That would be a really good deal for the Winnipeg jets. Uh, that courtesy of our guy every day sends, he made a big list of players to keep an eye on. So that's where I saw Dylan Demello. And I thought, yeah, no, what? He might be onto something there because that's one. That solves all your answers in my opinion. Yeah, you could save money on a new pair of gloves. He probably has his old Demello stitch gloves ready to go. And he would go knock on his door. See if he wants to go and play for the Ottawa Senators. I'll drive him the airport.

28:51I'll pick, I'll bring him all the way. I just talked about it on the postcast. How much I love that Northern Ontario drive. I'll, I'll go get him. Yeah, we might be the number one hockey podcast in Wawa, Ontario. We got multiple. Thank you for shutting out Wawa, Ontario. Let's go. Wawa. Best gas station in North Western Ontario, for sure. That's not debatable. Yeah, that is not debatable. Nice little waterfront area in that town too. If I'm not mistaken, just a beautiful town. That's right. Oh, yeah, Dr. Bob must have just been glowing up and down Lake Superior this time of year too. The just so bright out. The snow makes it just absolutely stunning right out of a Hollywood movie. That would be a nice Hollywood movie. A return of Dylan Demello. You can make a movie out of it. And Demello would probably direct it himself. Like he used to do the Christmas movies for the sense. Yeah, like come on. Let's go. If you bring back Dylan Demello, you've got to bring back our guy Craig Medaglia as well. Package deal. I'm in. Okay, that's interesting.

29:52The other names that I threw out there from the trade bait board. And I did it in order of how they're ranked on the trade bait board. Not necessarily how much they would help the Ottawa Senators. I threw Justin Falk's name on there. You can scratch off Connor Murphy's name from that. We already talked to Nazim about Zach White Cloud as being a fit. I still see that as a potential fit. We talked about Braden Schneider. A cost-controlled player. He's an RFA at the end of this season. But does he move the needle right now? Or is that more of a rebuilding team that should be going after him with a bigger role than what the Senators potentially have to offer him? I threw Stuart Skinner on this list too. He's been playing on believable hockey. I don't think he's available the way he's playing in the way that Pittsburgh is going right now. So I think that's a moot point. And then another name. Warren Fogel out of the LA Kings. Now he wouldn't be a needle mover necessarily. But if you are maybe looking for a home for David Peron elsewhere. He's just a speedy bottom six winger who has Stanley Cup playoff experience during runs with the Edmonton Oilers.

30:53I just think that it'd be a nice buy low candidate for the Ottawa Senators. If that's a direction they want to go. But again, right shot defenseman who can play in your top four. Play with Thomas Shabbat. That's the number one goal right now for the Ottawa Senators. If they surprise us with a top six forward. I won't say no to that as well. A shooter, a guy who can just absolutely get to the net and make things difficult. I would love that too. Connor Garland's the name that keeps being thrown out there. I saw a couple of reports today that are saying like there's no shortage of interest in Connor Garland. And that's not the type of player that I'm willing to get into a bidding war with with other teams that are going to throw a first round pick plus or this or that. But how about adding Matt Sogard and then having James Rimer and Belleville where maybe you can get a save? Yeah, I mean, yeah. Yeah, we'll get to that at the end of the show. But I don't think he's the kind of guy you put all the responsibility on his shoulders.
