About this episode

A world-class mountain runner and lawyer from Squamish, Kalie McCrystal, has vanished while attempting a record-breaking speed climb on the Matterhorn—her disappearance has led to a suspended search after no trace, signals, or signs have been found despite extensive aerial and ground efforts. Known for her elite alpine skills and previous solo summit, McCrystal was last seen near the Jean-Antoine Carrel hut at nearly 4,000 meters. Though the official search is paused, climbers and guides in the Swiss Alps remain vigilant, hoping someone will spot something that could reignite the hunt for this determined athlete.

It's September 6th. Welcome in. This is Toronto News Today, where local news meets AI. I'm Corey with the story. We're following a developing story out of the Swiss Alps, where a search for Kaylee Macrystal, a highly accomplished mountain runner and lawyer from. Squamish has been suspended. Macrystal, who is 37 years old, disappeared on Tuesday while training for a record attempt on the Matterhorn. She's known as a world-class athlete with extensive experience in Alpine terrain, having previously summited the Matterhorn. Her friends and family are understandably holding out hope, describing her as a survivor, and an elite athlete who trains for these challenging. Conditions. Athletics Canada confirmed her deep knowledge of the mountains and her family's involvement in the ongoing efforts. She was last seen ascending towards the summit near the Jean-Antoine-Carrelle hut, which sits at an elevation of nearly 4 km. Despite extensive efforts from both ground crews and aerial search teams using multiple helicopters, no trace of Macrystal has been found.

Searchers also couldn't detect any signals from her cell phone or any personal beacons she might have been carrying. This lack of any indication has led to the suspension of the official search operations. Macrystal was preparing for a speed record attempt, aiming to complete a round trip of the Italian side of the Matterhorn in under five hours. This followed a successful solo ascent and decent from the Swiss side in August, which took her seven hours, which took her seven hours. Her athletic achievements also include a record-setting performance on the Tantillus Traverse in Squamish. While the official search has been called off for now, the Matterhorn is a popular mountain. Guides and other climbers frequenting the area will be keeping an eye out for any clues that might help investigators. The hope is that someone might spot something that could lead to further efforts to find her.
