On March 12, a fire broke out in a science lab at Newman-Roman Catholic College in Oldham on Wednesday afternoon, March 11. Around 150 PM, students and staff evacuated safely after smoke was detected from a wooden workbench. Three fire engines from Oldham, Hollins, and Chatterton stations rushed to the scene on Broadway in Chatterton. Firefighters in breathing gear used a hose reel and gas monitors to put out the blaze, staying on site for about one hour and 40 minutes. The head teacher commended pupils and staff for their calm response and quick adherence to safety protocols. Built-in fire suppression systems kicked in fast, limiting damage to just that one lab. Following advice from the greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, the school is now conducting checks on electrical, gas, and fire safety systems. The building remains off limits until everything passes inspection. Pupils will continue with remote learning through Friday, March 13, as crews work to fully sign off the site as safe.
