Savage's Bakery Reopens: Free Cookies for First 250 Customers

The beloved spot is set to reopen on March 16th at 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. after closing earlier this year. To mark the occasion, the first 250 customers will get a free, smiley face cookie. New owner Kenneth Rhodes, who also runs O'Cars Delicateson, wants to line down the street when doors open. Rhodes plans to keep everything just as it was since the place has thrived for decades as a community staple. Families have visited for generations, making it a true local institution. The Bakery started in 1939 on Highland Avenue under William Savage. It moved to its current downtown homewood spot on 18th Street South in the 1950s. Vanscott, Jr. bought it in 1978 at age 27, but closed it in February amid a family lawsuit over unpaid wages. Don't step in to save this cherished tradition.
