2:05Download the Deepop app and list your first item today. I don't think the social media ban in Australia is working. It's a controversial statement I know, but if we're being honest, it's not. At least not for the kids who are already on it. Most of them are still using it. They're figured out ways around it, different birth dates, backup accounts, VPNs, older siblings, logins, friends, phones. If there's one thing teenagers have brilliant out, it's working the system. But here's the part no one really wants to say out loud. A lot of parents aren't enforcing it either. That really is the truth. I know their exceptions, and I know some families are doing it beautifully, but this is broadly speaking. The ban hasn't removed social media from kids' lives. It's just made it quieter, a bit more hidden. And I think that's important to acknowledge, especially for people overseas who think Australia has solved something miraculous. We haven't. We've changed the rule, but we haven't changed the

3:08desire because this isn't just about apps. It's about belonging. It's about identity. It's about not wanting to be the only one who isn't in the group chat or doesn't know the trend. You say you can ban a platform, but you can't ban the fear of missing out. Now here's where I think it could actually work. For the kids who have never been on it. If you've never had the dopamine hit, you don't crave it in the same way. If you've never lived in comparison mode, then you don't feel the same withdrawal. So yes, maybe the next cohort benefits. Please, God, fingers crossed, they do. But here's what makes me slightly uncomfortable. We're acting like policy will fix what is actually a cultural issue. We can't outsource parenting to legislation. We can't regulate self-worth into teenagers and we can't ban insecurity and we definitely can't ban comparison. That work still happens at home in conversations, in modeling and whether we put our own phones down

4:13because here's the part that hurts. If adults can't stay of social media, if we're scrolling when we're anxious, if we're checking it before we even say good morning to our kids, what exactly are we teaching? It's very easy to say that they shouldn't have it. It's harder to look at our own relationship with it. And I'm not anti the ban no way at all. I just don't think it's the miracle people think it is. I think it's a starting point and maybe if we're brave, it's an invitation, an invitation to actually talk about belonging, about pressure, about why we all crave validation because this isn't just a teenage problem. It's a human one and greatness, real greatness isn't about controlling the outside world. It's about building strength on the inside and that's the part that no government can legislate.
