What happened to it? Many, many things, eh? It does look kind of... Whoa! Oh Sam! In time, having my wounds will heal. Oh wow, that name you gave me that something you do with it. I could tell when she came in here that she was going to be... The Marchua's nail nacee bone. Huh? Latin speak well of the dead, remember? Oh, yeah. There are one thing at a time, Sway, let's get this over with.

I want to find a docket. Oh, you're so brave, Sam. Carrying on in the face of... Have you seen? Sure, sure, sure. You will be satisfied, and it does... It does die from your possession. Well, if I don't nail nacee bone, I'm having nail nacee bone. That means... Latin means, eh, you have bony knees. Oh... Uh, date July 24, 1949, too, is Daphne Arlington from Samuel Spade. San Francisco license number 137596. Subject the tears of night, dear Daphne. I hope this will clear up a few things in your mind. I hope it'll let you know how you got where you are and what happened to put you there. It all has an illogical beginning, middle, and end. At three, yesterday afternoon, my loyal secretary and confidant, Miss Effie Perrine, Adal, who has been rehearsing a cockney play for television, flowing up in my office door and said... And this mind me, Jason, to see Mr Spade. I said, to eat. Miss Mamie Gagan looked everything the name implied from her lately blonded head

or a genuine alligator shoes. I might add she weighed in at approximately 160 and was in very good condition. You, Spade. I am here. Sit on, please. Daphne. Don't you believe me? I hate dumb shoes. They all stink. Uh, something in your background. Perhaps as a girl, I'm just assuming that you were one. Oh, dumb shoes are nozy. They talk too much. That's why I don't like them here. For me? Who else, Tooped? Oh, then it says, uh, pay to the order of Samuel Spade, $100, signed Mamie Gagan, co-signed Johnny McCaw. All right, is it good? You wise, guy. Or something sure is good. I'm the treasure. Get your hands. In this weather? We're gonna go see Johnny. McCaw. Yeah. Uh, why are we gonna see Johnny? Johnny wants you should do something for him. Oh, what does Johnny want I should do for him? Come on, Spade. What's the matter with you? He'll tell you. I just love to hear you talk, ma'am. That's all. Oh, this Daphne isn't getting us nowhere. The boss is waiting. Gumshoes talk too much. Yes, ma'am. Well, maybe we do, but ours is a lonely profession. Mamie let me do a large Cadillac, parking in the no parking zone.

She tore the ticket up and ate it. We got in and tried through traffic towards Berlin, gave it. About a half a mile this side of the main highway. We turned off the left. And pretty soon we were winding up a private road to a final colonial mansion. There were three private patrolmen regarding the entrance. They all needed shade. They kind of nodded as we went up the front door. Naturally enough, it didn't open, but a peep-shutter did. Yeah. Me, Philly. That's the private keeper of the boss wants to see. Open up. Okay. How are you feeling, Mr. Philly? It's cool. It's cool. All kinds of folks around. This way, Spade. Oh, that's... Mamie, I got your peepers. Okay. Inside. Here he is, Johnny Flatfee, and all his name's Philly. I know. I know. I picked him myself. Go on, beat him. I hate to come to you. I don't mind, Mamie. She's kind of bitter. Yes, she is. You did a lousy job on a hair-lice time. It's all streaky. Yeah, I know that. Place it out. Nice place, Johnny. Nice place. How's the gross?

Oh, ain't as good as running beer, but, name days are gone. I do all right. Two crap table, two ferro gains, a little roulette in the living room. But I have to be careful. You seem to have plenty of muscle outside. I have to keep it safe and comfy. Yeah. Uncle of them. But, at the best, I can get nowadays no good gunsels left. Guess they all got man-settle down at them. All right, Johnny. It's cool and it's nice out here. You make a living and I got to check for $100. Why? Well, in my line, I don't generally have much use for a private eye. I don't generally like them. You do this, Mamie. But I can use them right now. Have you ever seen this before? No. Well, it's a little bit of necklace. Nice to scare you. All the tears and night are something. It was quite a chunk of getus. These four diamonds are good stuff. They named Daphne Olligan, left it here a week ago, and she went in for a plunger at the roulette table. She left it for a standby, as she raised the cash. Oh, it's a screwy, dang. You know, I would have had a lot of money. Boyfriend named Lenny Eppich, he painted them. Well, she sent me a check today for the 5G she lost, and I just wanted to take this thing back to her. That all?

Yeah, that's all. I got my dough, she gets a necklace. You're a licensed bonded investigator, insured, safe with you. I couldn't trust any of my punks with it, and I don't like to be seen in public, so you just take it back. It's all very simple. Uh-huh. Now that you've told me how simple it is, of course you give me the unexplicated sequel. Did her check bounce? Yep. All right. You got a drink? There wasn't any check, Sam. She called me a couple of hours ago, and said if I didn't have this thing back to her by tonight, she'd call a load of cops and come out here and tear the joint apart. Not that you screw her down at that? Yes, stuck. You're telling me. If she comes with cop, I'm closed for season. I'm getting old. Oh, you're not old, John. Ah, Phoebe was running the table. I didn't know he'd taken this thing for security until we counted up. Stupid, Phoebe. I should have pushed his machine at some point. Letting a day like that make us a setup. Well, maybe you'll do better next time. Oh, ain't gonna be no next time, Spade. Well, here's your address. Here's the ice. Just take it to her and I'll chalk it up to experience. Better get yourself a new boy at that table, Johnny.

You telling me. You telling me. Well, uh. Bye. No, no. No, no. No, no. No, no. No, no. Lenny, I thought you'd never get here. The performance began to date 30 and you know how the traffic is. Never going to have a bike to eat. You ought, Lenny. Where's Lenny? I don't know, Miss Olly. Then I'm supposed to deliver some jewelry. jewelry? That will be Marchus. Marchus. Marchus. Uh, yes, but I am. What are you looking at? You have throat. Really? But really, Mr. Mrs. Spade, Samson. Really, Mr. Spade? I'm only waiting for Lenny to get here so we can make the first curtain of StreetCon. We're going to be late if he doesn't get here. You can understand that, Mr. Spade. You're going to be a little early. StreetCon doesn't open until Monday. And already, and he hasn't shown up. Well, good night, Mr. Spade. Hey. The white arm and cape you were wearing and the black strapless ring made of the touch.

But you had it. A diamond necklace. In fact, the tears of night, the same one I had in my pocket, Daphne, was hanging around your lovely neck. I rebuzzed your buzzer and knocked on your door for quite a while until it was quite evident that you were not going to open up. Under the hallway light, I snapped over the necklace case. Marchus, you would say. And Marchus was what had said, stamp inside the case. A gloomy word with a gloomy address. The white hotel on Turk Street. A terrible march, you ass. That your service, sir. A federal man had the look of death. That was this one who had its name. He was older than old. Cadavris, and in his skull-like head, his eyes were white. He was wearing a flannel night shirt.

He was a friend of the Ubytian Disposed with Mr. Spade. And the Turk at the desk said it was a matter of jewelry. Therefore, how do you know what a marchus is at your service? Now, then, sir, what is so urgent? I came to ask you about a diamond necklace. I found your name stamp on the inside. How so marchus must be respected in the diamond, as well as all the lapidelia. Most respected. Find yours in the name of Marchus is the world over. I am the last to fall, sudden, but what continues to stay? Well, I just want you to take a look at that. And how do you come in possession of the tears of knights, sir? Well, a man named Johnny McCall, or as a gambling club, hired me to deliver it to a lady named Stephanie Arlington. She lost her at the toilet table. She left the band until she could raise the cash. The deplorable conductor turned her thoughts. Stephanie Arlington moved in discreet young lady to be sure to be sure. I recall the way you were with her when her late husband Sydney ordered this necklace.

A lovely body propelled by a ridiculous mine. For shame such conduct, a gambling house that tears of knights upon. Well, this is rare, am I, that doesn't funny? Mr. Spade, I am a gemologist. The house of marchus, of course, it's real. Thank you, Godluck. When an artist creates a dazzling thing of beauty such as this, would he be so unlikely as to forget that I am the patient's the agon of this creation? See, oh, each stone is carefully mounted to capture every single pin point of light. An incomparable masterpiece and an incredible money. How much money? A little wholesale market, about 10,000. He paid 25, but he had it, as I say, incomparable. Yeah. Yeah, while I saw another one just like it tonight, really ridiculous. The finest workman is best could only create a crude resemblance. This kind of work demands an artist, a renautist. But tell me, a lot of young people say about it. Oh, my second year laughing at scams me. Sneaking at last, and it's something wrong.

Something wrong, yeah. You were concerned for the safety of this piece. I have a small safe in my room. I may have the key if you care. I'll take it with me. Thank you, Mr. Marjoral. My pleasure, Mr. Spade. Open your mortuous bonus vocates. All speak well of mortuous, of puddings of it. Good evening. In the dismaravvy of the White Hotel, I asked the nightclub to some wrapping paper in 20 cents where the stamps. It was a hunch, plus the fact that outside in the street I spotted two of Johnny McCalls unshaved guerrillas. They were looking up at the front of the building. Mr. Marjoral's must have switched off his light or something, because their eyes suddenly dropped and I saw them separate when on each side of the front door. With shoulders carefully hunched, I stepped out into the lungs and light. I hoped they would think I was carrying my 38, which I was not. They didn't. Is the people candy you want to ask them for a match? Candy's nish, I did. That's too bad. Hey, my honest. Got a match, Spade.

Oh, that's a close. Candy asked if you got a match. He's a dummy, Candy. He don't answer. Got a match, Spade. What did I tell you? He's a dummy. He don't look like no dummy. He's a dummy, all right? Interspade. She's a dummy, Candy. I told him about you being nish-sidedly wouldn't answer. He don't talk. Go on, smart boy. Tell him how sorry you are about him being nish-sidedly. I told you he was a dummy, Candy. All private eyes like you. Candy asked you a question. He wants to know if all private eyes is like you. I don't like no dummy. We asked questions and he ain't told us nothing. That makes him a dummy. Maybe we'll find out something if we went through his pockets. Yeah, even a dummy's got pockets. Ain't that right, dummy? Hold him, Candy. All right, boys. You played the scene real good. And I'll see what I can do for you. McDonald's is putting value back on the menu.

Whether you're craving a big mac, McNuggets are sausage egg and cheese. Macgrittles make it a meal and save. Your favorite is now your wallet's favorite too. Extra value meals are back. Sun rises, prices fall. Get a sausage mac muffin with egg or sausage egg and cheese macrittles. Small hot coffee and hash frowns for just fixed stars. Price and participation may vary. Make them talk bigger, candy. Bigger. Bigger. It talks real nice, but it don't say much. Think maybe he's tough, right? Yeah, maybe. Hold them up. See? He ain't so tough. Now I wasn't. I didn't feel like talking on that quiet little street that the only noise was my face pounding on that fist. I didn't have to necklace anymore, but they had to find out the hard way, the hard way for me. The makers of wildroot cream oil are pretty good for the job. It's a good job. And now back to the Thears of Night Caper. Tonight's adventure with Sam Spade. I remember trying to wake up a couple of times. I was dreaming that we were driving along in a giant Cadillac. Big Mamie was sitting on my lap. She was eating a diamond necklace and spitting out cherry pits which Mr. Nortuous grabbed looked at through his jewelers' glass and then tossed it all over the left wheel. Then we had a blow out in a whole car vanace with everybody screaming Dormortuous, Dormortuous. Somewhere around 7 am I began to get a feeling. Several feelings and all of them hurt. I had been dumped on the grass in a fairly nice neighborhood. In your neighborhood as a matter of fact, Daphne. And five minutes later I was climbing the steps to your apartment. I thought maybe it'd let me wash my face in your bathroom. Also you've seen the logical window question since nothing else made sense.

You were sitting in a large chair. The drapes were drawn, the door was slightly open. And only the life in the hall was seat in. You had the phone on your lap. The receiver was off. My guess was right. You were looking at nothing. Oh, Mr. Spade, it's you. You came back. I've been in an accident. I don't think you lead us. Oh, well then Mr. Spade. Well then, I suppose you've met some people tonight and know a great deal about me. A gambler or a juller? Did they tell you about many efforts? It's really a deal, Mr. Spade. Quite the nicest boy I met since Sydney was killed in that horrible, horrible deal accident. Sydney and I had so many things together. I do think he enjoyed being alive, wasn't he? I cried when Sydney was killed.

I really did. I cried. I'm sorry, I didn't know. I didn't know what to do. I cried. Whether that was three years ago, but now I have a lineage. It's really a deal. I do think that Lenny will be a very prominent artist. Someday I... I do. Lenny asked me to marry him tonight. He did? I've been very lonely since Sydney died. Lenny isn't interested in my money. Lenny has money of his own. What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? I should see a correctionist. I'm glad you came back again. I didn't know you were the judge of the first time. Who told you? What? Mr Mac Lenny...

Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... Lenny... He's buying something across the dark and blue... ...of around 10 seconds to find a life-school. Spreads down on your floor. They look funny, all right? Candy and Ernest. Both of them as dead as you can get.

Hello, darling. Darling, darling. I've been waiting on my mic. I knew you'd telephone and give you a answer. I knew you'd marry. Your name, Lenny Effich. Boy, yes, but I was expecting it. My name's Spade. I'm a private investigator. I'm calling from her apartment. What's happening? Now, listen, there's been a couple of murders here. Murderous? She's had quite a jolt. She's going to need you and all the help she can get to bring her out of it. I've called homicide and it might be pretty rough for her. I'll be right over. Bring it, Doctor. Right. And a lawyer. I'm afraid she'll lead one of those two. I've got a good one. We'll be there. Thanks, Mr. Spade. He showed up about the same time the crew from homicide got there. If the answer is a good guy, he talked fast and urgent layers to the doctor and lawyer he brought with him and through their combined efforts, you will remove not the police headquarters, but to the private hospital in which you are now a patient. It was obvious from the powder test that you could not have fired the 45, which ended the lives of candy and Ernest. It was also obvious that the murders have been done elsewhere. But who had done them were man to be seen. I've been expecting you to come in, sir.

I've been amusing myself with your chest boards. Sit down. Sit down. You had a hectic night. Your boys were pretty rough. Candy and Ernest. Two men of another world, Mr. Spade. Not her world. I don't mean to apologize for that, heck. I want more than an apology, Mr. Marchewis. And if that's my gun and it looks like it has got a hair trigger. And if you'll pardon me for saying so, your hands are a little shaky. I underestimated you, Spade. Such an ingenious method of protecting the tears of night. Why, sir, but the simple excuse you know. Of placing you in an unbeloved meeting into yourself. From my hotel, Lava, you hired as guardians. The entire United States Postal Service, not to mention the armed forces. Thanks. What happens now? We wait for the mail. Just tell me where I'm wrong, where you Mr. Marchewis. My call wanted me to get caught whether he didn't know it was real. You'd made a phone inform. Only you found out it wasn't funny when I came to Europe. Then there was a double cross. If you can bear my vanity, I have invented a new word. Triple cross. It has a ridden to it, isn't it?

Including Mamie? Mamie and her friends have been very valuable to me, but I must necessarily exclude them from shelling the profits. Mamie, not a good candidate, Anast. A bet is by the last of the helps of Marchewis. You're part of them in that, Nes place. Mamie and I. A crude judge I thought was at his purpose. I haven't to know that Mrs. Marchewis is a good candidate. I haven't to know that Mrs. Arlington has for a long time, you know, the verge of a nervous breakdown, with two cadavers in her living room. She was very unlikely to discuss a book with Nes place with the police. And I doubt very much if she knew she was wearing the original or the imitation, frite girl. And it's the lastiest thing the house of Marchewis ever did. She walked in and found it. If you would merely return to real Nes place to her, it would have been simple to make an exchange, and none of this would have been necessary. I know, I know, you just sit here and wait for the mail. We wait for the mail. What about your other appointment? Have the three dials be sought for the murderer to a three? This night? Mamie.

She got it, too? Yes. Where are the police going to find her? In my hotel room, which I departed hastily once the room clucked and formed, we'll be able to build a genius method for protecting the necklace. I shot her there. You were cheap. Sheep, sir. I don't understand. At $10,000 necklace? It's not quite a king's ransom, you know. The tears of night are worth five times. I'm afraid I misinformed you as to their value. I didn't want you to become suspicious. You are a really horrible, terrifying old man. I suppose you think you'll get away with it. I don't intend to get away with it. And old man, yes. But I intend to spend my remaining years. I'll pick you up before you get to the airport. I doubt that. I shall turn the tears of night into cash. And with the well-ledgedy purse, she'll guarantee to elude the police over half the world. It's two years, but I have three days to get to meet. But I'll spend the money. And we have a president. I shouldn't spend. I do shoot well. I'm sure it's a little away. I'll be right beside you.

All right. Open it. What, one side's paid. I got a gun. Obviously. Me, me. That's why I'd find you here waiting for the mail. You dirty. You didn't do such a good job on me. Caution, my dear, I have a gun too. Everybody with me. I can ride quite enough to let you have it. Not so good, my dear. Your loss of blood has made you grumpy. But still it got enough. Well, for it. It was almost a photo finish. It kind of leaned into the wall with a pain and a maize look on his face. And he seemed to try to walk. I was a spade. A spade's rather believe I've been shot. I don't need a little assistant. I can't seem to hold my feet, sir. I can't seem to hold me. This was an awkward plan, best. The mortuous, nearly ceibond of spade.

Or if your second year Latin escapes your memory. Speak with the day. Very good, Anna report. All those people. Four and all. And that poor girl, Beth, how she must have felt when she's... Oh, thank you. Now, it was pretty bad. You poor darling. Well, I must have bought time. And you go right home. In fact, I'm going to take you home. Yeah, then what? Well. You are a regidious nurse, maybe. Well, I know. Go tight that up. I am completely well. And when you return, we shall Indian rattle. Certainly, sir. And now, listen to this. Shopping notes. Tonight or tomorrow. Get a family-sized bottle or handy tube of wild-root cream oil, America's favorite hair tonic. Oh, nice. Good night, Fred. Good night, Fred. Good night, Fred. Good night, Fred.
