Sam McClure and Matthew Lloyd go back and forth on North Melbourne's list

0:00wanted to touch on North Melbourne to start this hour in terms of their search for a new coach following the sacking of Alistair Clarkson. They appointed their panel during the week. What did you make of it, especially the inclusion of an our former Colingwood player in Stillside Bottom? I just think it's amazing, Shane, how if you've coached before, you just don't get a role really any more apart from Ken Hinkley and the Tasmanian job, I think everyone's just gone away from that. So it's been a long time really hasn't it? And the success mode, the lack of Damian Harbick at the Gold Coast Suns, Alistair Clarkson, Mickey Moldhaus, I'm trying to think of some of the others in recent times that the second time coach is Ross Lyon coming back hasn't really worked too well for them. So everyone's looking now for whether Sam Mitchell is supposed to boy right now Stephen King, Josh Fraser, that North Melbourne have said no, we're looking for a first-time coach

1:00now as well. Are you surprised by that Jimmy and you look at this space pretty closely? It seems like it's a bit of a trend and I wonder who will be the one that bucks that trend and says, no, no, no, we'll go and get this guy because we think that for whatever reason he wasn't, you know, given the best opportunity and we think he can bring new ideas. He, like, it doesn't happen in other sports. The NFL was at the MCG today. They don't throw out coaches then they're never to be seen again. Chubby Alonzo got sacked from Ray on Madrid six months ago and went straight into coaching Chelsea. Like we haven't... Wait a minute, it's still going around in the NRL time. Yeah, after time. We do have... I guess my question is Jimmy, if North Melbourne were to say hi John Lomboyer and they want a flag or hi Nathan Buckley and they want a flag, I reckon that would give confidence to the next team to say, oh well, if it can be done, it can be done. Yeah, we are in a copycat industry, aren't we? And yeah, he got it. I think we can lump them all together but then I think if you break them down and you have a look at the different roles

2:03that they've gone into their second coaching gig, Mick Multers had three coaching gigs now. Remember, and we're successful at two of them and I think the impatient nature we are in football and I think we're impatient now with second time around coaches because we want the instant magic straight away. So when they come across, we've got to realise a lot of those successful coaching stops that they had. How long did it take, Damien Hardwick to win the Premiership enrichment? It was like the seventh year. I started in 11 and one and seven. Yeah, Elis De Clarkson probably Buck De Trinity got that early one in our way but then really when they kicked it into gear as well, Mick Multers took them up there but then took a little bit time to actually win it because remember that the back-to-back Grand Final was at Collingwood before they actually won. So I think it's the impatient nature. I'm with you. I think we tend to quickly go back to young again but there are. What it's probably pointing to is how well-prepared coaches are now at that assistant coaching level and that's why I think we're going to them more often.

3:04The Dory I think Shane and the question that the sacking of Clarko last week immediately brought up for me was Hasn't North Melbourne overestimated their list and then Laudey on Monday, which I wasn't prepared for and really got me thinking, set on classified that he doesn't think the next coach of North will have a grace period because there'll be expectations. People will expect whoever coaches North to come in. Well, they have to go forward. They have to have more wins next year than they did in 2026. They have to. Yeah, that would have been the other one. Otherwise the board has completely failed. That would have been the expectation of having their fouls at Clarkson was still there. I said, yeah. The problem is I just don't think they have the talent to do that. They've got to say that Stephen King at Melbourne. They've got Max Gordon, Cosy P. But if they don't have the talent, they did a review. I think it was before it was actually while David Noble was in the chair. They did a review of their football department. So if you don't think they have the talent, they should be reviewing at this stage, not only appointing their coach, but they should be reviewing their football power. Well, they have to be. I mean, Brady Rawlings has been there since the end of 2019 and

4:05you know, he's been in charge of their recruiting and list management. These things are on your hood. I think she believes they do have a good list. I agree. I agree that that's what she thinks. I would challenge that. I don't. Yeah. And that's January's an I'm saying. Well, I think it's pretty good. Who's their best player? I name any one of their midfielders like She's all. I saw. I saw. She's apparently had a good year, but wasn't in the best 40 players. That's what happens. But that midfield Sam is a very, very good. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. I think it is. I think it is. Yeah. They just need to. Another 20 game. I think empirical data would suggest that they're behind. Yeah. That they're lack of key position depth. We know we know lucky hadn't had these best year, but behind the footy. Yeah. But there's some good options in the draft from the Fischer's straightaway. So the belief around North Melbourne is that they have the nucleus of a list and they need that coach to come in and take them to the next level. That was the initial principle of Ross line going to St Kilda that they needed a coach to take

5:08them to the next level. Why they got rid of Brad. Yeah. Replaced Brad. That didn't happen. And they brought in an experienced coach like Ross line. So is there more evidence? The fact that they are looking to just go to that next echelon North Melbourne that maybe they do look like at a John Longwire or Adam Simpson closer than say a team that is toward the bottom of the line. That's the same thing that was said for Damien Hardwick. And he said it when he first got there. I've got 80% of the list right here. Now all of a sudden it's down to 22% and we're getting messages of we're young and we're still trying to build her. Damien Barrett during the week say he wanted to go to Dakota. He wanted Russell back. So they pretty much said we want a modern coach. We don't want the coach that coach premierships back a decade ago. We need someone who's going to evolve and that was pretty much what's coming out of North since then. People say they only said half of what they quarter of what they wanted to say really about what was going wrong at North Melbourne and that a lot of it hadn't evolved meetings. Instead of going for 2530 that the modern coach goes they could go

6:08for two, three hours. And those things all built up on the players and the staff and moving forward with just a messy week though for the club wasn't it? The stuff that began emanating and leaking and then the Clarkson interview with Carro. But I don't think either party Jim has come out of this looking how they would have liked to. I reckon if you could rewind a week ago I reckon both parties would do things differently. Yeah I think it's pretty split like it depends what you see in it. So speaking to people there's a group of people who think they loved what Sonja Hood and Todd Viny did. The ruthless nature playing speaking not corporate jargon where we we have a lot of people in foodie trying to spew a business management book up at every time they get a microphone just to prove how intelligent they were to the week. And then there's others who go well you probably went a little bit too far and you're a little bit disrespectful to a guy that has so much success as being a coach and you still respect people on the way out. So I think it's all in the beholder of what you want from what I call it a media strategy post the exit.
