from the streets of Birmingham to the world. This is Birmingham News today. A popular food website called Tasting Table just named Salem's diner in Homewood as the top diner in Alabama. This classic spot serves up old school breakfast and lunch favorites right in the heart of downtown. It marks the third national shout-out for the diner in the past three and a half years. Back in May 2025, Mash.com picked it as the best in the state and three and a half years ago in 2022, food and wine gave it the same honor. Homewood's mayor is excited about the recognition. She points out how the diner stands out with its great breakfast, burgers, and cheesesteak sandwiches, drawing folks from all over to enjoy a meal. The place goes back to the 1950s when famous college quarterback Ed Salem started driving around Birmingham. His son Wayne took over in 1983 and opened the current diner spot in Homewood in the mid-2000s. Wayne says business really took off after the move in 2006, keeping him busier than expected. Today

Salem's draws crowds for its warm hospitality and stand out Philly cheesesteaks. It's open from 6.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. every day except Sunday. The Daily News Now is presented by a sponsor.
