Saints' Rookie Simpkins Shines on Offensive Line

The New Orleans Saints have a track record of turning undrafted rookies into stars, but this passies and only one stood out. That was 23-year-old offensive lineman, Torchelli Simkins, a 6-foot-5-312-pound guard. He played in 15 games with two starts during his rookie year. Simkins built an impressive college resume, earning all American honors and North Carolina Central before transferring to South Carolina. There, he picked up third team All-South Eastern Conference recognition as a senior. The Saints signed him right after the draft, filling a big need on their struggling offensive line. Andrews opened doors early for Simkins. Veterans went down, giving him his first start in week 3 and another soon after, when center Cesar Ruiz got hurt. He held his own, shining in run blocking and improving in pass protection over about 178 snaps. It's puzzling why his offensive snaps dropped off sharply after that, with just one more the rest of the way.

1:04He contributed on special teams and kicking units, but coaches stuck with weaker starters despite the line's issues. Looking ahead, the Saints plan to revamp their interior line this off season.
