Saints Bring Home Louisiana Native | NFL News
About this episode
The Saints are bringing home a Louisiana native, claiming cornerback Decamerion Richardson off waivers from the Raiders — a former fourth-round pick with starting experience and special teams chops. Once a standout tackler at Mississippi State and a rookie starter, Richardson’s defensive role faded last year, but his speed, athleticism, and versatility make him a valuable developmental asset. Now back in his home state, he gets a fresh shot to reclaim his potential — and prove he’s more than just a special teams contributor.

It's September 2nd. Welcome in. This is NFL News Today, where the league meets AI. I'm Corey with the story. The New Orleans Saints are bringing a Louisiana native back to the Bayou. They claim defensive back to Cameron Richardson, off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. This gives the former fourth round pick a chance to play in his home state. Richardson was a fourth round draft pick just two years ago and even started seven games as a rookie. However, his defensive role diminished significantly last season, with most of his playing time shifting to special teams. Now, the Saints get to see if they can tap into that earlier potential while adding a player with special teams experience to their secondary. The Raiders waive Richardson after they picked up another player. He grew up in Colin, Louisiana and played college ball and Mississippi State. There, he was known for his tackle and ability, even leading SEC cornerbacks and tackles for two seasons. His athleticism, including a fast 40 yard dash time, helped him get drafted.
The Saints are likely looking at that combination of size and speed as a developmental asset. Even though his defensive snaps decreased last year, he still played a lot of special teams, showing he can contribute in multiple ways. This move gives the Saints another young cornerback with starting experience and a proven ability to play on special teams. It's a different kind of acquisition than just picking up an unproven player after roster cuts. He'll get his next opportunity to prove himself right back where he started in Louisiana.
