More info on farewell celebrations will come out before the 2026-2027 hockey season starts. The arena opened back in 1983, built for the 1988 Winter Olympics and as the Flames New Home. Over the years, it welcomed the A.H.L.'s Calgary Wranglers, the W.H.L.'s Calgary Hitmen, and the N.L.L.'s Calgary Roughnecks along with huge concerts, tournaments and conventions. Fans have mixed feelings about saying goodbye to a venue that shaped Calgary Sports Scene for over 40 years. It's been the heart of community gatherings and big moments, leaving a lasting mark on the city.
In April 2023, CSEC, the city of Calgary and the Alberta government agreed to build Scotia Place, a new event center with a community. Rink and District upgrades, groundbreaking happen in July 2024 with the project set to wrap up by Fall 2027.
