S2 E22 Never Forget: Lessons Learned At NY Telephone Fire with Guests Dan Noonan - Chief Frank Leeb (FDNY)

 On February 27, 1975, a five-alarm fire erupted in the basement of the New York Telephone Company building in lower Manhattan. The toxic blaze exposed 699 FDNY firefighters to hazardous chemicals, leading to long-term health issues, including cancer. Retired firefighter Dan Noonan, first due on 3 Truck, has spent decades advocating for awareness of occupational cancer and toxic exposure in the fire service. Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb, Acting Chief of Training for the FDNY, has spearheaded efforts to honor those impacted through a special dedication ceremony and commemorative plaques. This episode explores the history of the fire, the fight for firefighter health and safety, and the ongoing efforts to recognize the sacrifices of those who responded to one of the most devastating incidents in FDNY history.
