Rwanda Warns of Mozambique Troop Withdrawal

Rwanda has warned it will pull its troops out of Mozambique unless foreign backers provide steady funding for the counterterrorism mission. The troops have been fighting a jihadist insurgency in the Northern Kabul-Delgado province since July 2021. Earlier this week, Rwanda's foreign minister said the countries benefitting from their help are the same ones criticizing and sanctioning Rwandan forces. This comes amid US visa restrictions on Rwandan officials accused of backing rebels in eastern Congo. The Mozambique Operation targets Islamic state-linked fighters who launched deadly attacks, including a 12-day assault on the town of Palma Inn, 2021. That violence killed dozens and halted a $20 billion offshore gas project by total energies. Rwandan officials argue their troops have made huge sacrifices to stabilize the area and let displaced people return home. They point out the mission costs at least 10 times more than the roughly $23 million
