Sydney suffered shrapnel, deeply embedded in his left arm, which doctors removed. He and his camera operator have been covering attacks on bridges that are cutting off southern Lebanon from the rest of the country. Sweeney called the strike deliberate, noting no prior warnings or alerts to the Lebanese Army that it approved their filming. Russia's foreign ministry condemned it as far from accidental.
