RSPB: Summer Bird Feeder Ban to Protect Endangered Species

They say skip putting out food from May 1st through October 31st when warmer weather turns those spots into disease traps. A parasite called trichomonosis is hitting hard, wiping out green finches and chafenches by messing with their throats and making it tough to eat or breathe. Greenfinch numbers have crashed by 2 million birds, landing them on the endangered red list. Back in 1979, they ranked 7th in garden sightings, now they're down to 18th. Over 16 million homes feed birds regularly, with folks dropping massive cash, 380 million pounds a year on seed that could feed. Way more than needed. People are feeling in mixed. Some gardeners love watching sparrows and finches up close, but plan to pause feeding to help the birds stay healthy.
