2:05Last time we were here was with an even younger group tonight. We unfortunately were on the end of it again with the more mature. We don't have many out at the moment, so we're in a good position to have a crack at it. We felt like we could play for the month and you're always believing yourself, but maybe tonight's a bit of a reality check. We still got some work to do. Got a reality check, serious. They're a long way off. They're further than I thought. Have they progressed or regressed? You asked me that in the sport room. Some players have progressed, but I think across the board they've regressed. I said, Delet, just in the lead up to our show, I felt my gut feel would be, I thought you played better looking football last year. Yeah, the movement was better. I think it took a while for you to catch up. It was almost to the break where the Adelaide coach has said, we're going to tank us with some things over the break and came out better looking after that. It's his eighth season. They did regress in whatever measure you did.

They're going to go through a thorough review, but somehow before that season started, Nick's the man they say is the man and they trust the program. The program that's failed two years in a row with the same issues. We've seen the last years finals and also during the monoram game. Next year, Nick's comment, we've still got a long way to go. After seven years, we're heading in the right direction.

8:12Well, if we've got a long way to go after seven years, next year in the year after, there isn't going to be much better. But results going against the teams, we've failed against time and time again. And the game plan says otherwise. It's gone backwards. By any measure, it's been the same failures in finals two years straight, but this organisation's leaders aren't interested in results and accountability. There is no way you can tell me that we are heading in the right direction when we are seeing the same issues that we've been viewing for the last two years. Thanks for the call. Anyway, the reason why we need change is I'm just going to bring up a few points here. Back when, Colley would finish 17th back in 2021, right? 17th. The next year Craig McCray was appointed coach. Do you know what he did? He took him to a pre-lemon, was one kick away from a grand final.

15:26The year after, guess what? They won the flag. He's been there five years and they've bloody turned it around, and that's all he's needed. It was five years. What else have I got here? This guy is just not a good coach. Okay, and that's just we need change. We need change very quickly.

25:39from the Crow's Brisbane game on the weekend. But, you know, I agree. I don't think the team that's going to be in Brisbane on the night. They were great. They were great. But it's really the matter of loss, I think, that you look at. And you, the one big advantage the Crow's had on Saturday night was they knew what was going to come at them. They knew there was three, three or four players in that Brisbane team that had awful games, probably worse games that they've ever had that week before. And they had that fairly contract decision. So, that was a big push for the team as well. But they must have known that Brisbane would come out breathing fire and they're on a home deck at the gathering. I don't want to point the finger at coaches normally because I always think the players have ultimate accountability and they do take that. But on this occasion, when I look at the three-man to a horse along game the week before and it's well known now that Hawthorne trained specifically

26:39for that three-man to go psychologically and in their play. So, you sort of look at it and wonder either the Crow's aren't good enough or what was the preparation like for that game knowing what they would have known about what they were going into. Yeah, well, they'll have to review all of that burning and they're all good points. And 190 seconds of a final, a cut through it for one of them. Brisbane kicked three goals. After five minutes, they were five goals, one to no score, ten inside 50s to zero. That's either they are a very good team and they are. They likely go on and win the fight. What do I say last week? I said, the winner of these two semis will go on to play off the ground final. You did. So that means three-hour beats Sydney and Brisbane will beat Hawthorne. I said that last week. You did, oh, really? Well, they've still got to do it. I don't agree with you, but yeah. I still think Sydney will win. I said, I think Sydney will get through and we'll beat three-hour. 34:47Guys, I'm not a cross fan, but I watch all the port and cruise games. Because you've got to keep an eye on the enemy, because they're closed. Now, the way I see it is Chris Fagan took over the Brisbane lines in 2007, and they finished bottom. Three seasons later, they made the finals, and since then, they won back-to-back Premiership, and probably haven't had another crack at it. Nixie took over in 2020, finished bottom, took me years to make the finals. Now, his finals record, at the moment, is one three, with a 77% pitch. Now, let's not pretend that we're against the Bulldog at that time. At top 14, against the next-place team at home, would have smashed the Bulldog by at least 10 goals or more. That was the game where really the Bulldog, I think it has 61 in 542, 45 or something. They hit the last quarter, Pete. They did, they did, and at home, they shot, because they shot, and they did well in that game.

35:48But let's think, his finals record is one three, 77% pitch. Now, if he's going to coach Nixie, I think he needs to, I think the players will probably start to question the game plan, because the crows are a hard working, blue collar team. They are for sorry for the players, they run hard, they tackle. They crack. They just give a good crack, right? And I admire that, must admit, for the crows, because they do do a good crack every game. But they just don't have the cattle, because Brisbane, regardless of their economy picks, whatever, it just shows that how much talent is important to win Premiership. Of course, it is, it's the most important thing. Bedfields win Flanks, and our midfields have, they've not up there. And just the comparison between Chris Fagan and Matthew Nix. By the stats, Chris Fagan's first two finals campaigns, exactly the same numbers, one of three. Yeah. Then they started winning. Yeah, and you've got to get that through the midfield. Actually, that's not true. They went one and five, they had two straight sets,

36:49around three years. One, four quarters of the 16 in finals, if you count the last quarter against Brisbane, where they turned it up, records two six against the top teams. What happened with FoggyD with these suspensions? And we just accepted all that with the whip without a whip just a wimp it really. Hopefully the next guy that comes in as chairman once all the building's done and the new grounds are set up. Hopefully the next guy will be a bit more, a bit tougher and they'll be tougher all around. I don't think the cr- I don't have faith in the crows. They put me off first time this year that I really got put off was when poor Adelaide just just in that big time. And their midfield coach is so much better than out I think. Their coach is better than out. The port supporters I think have got a lot more faith than us and I wouldn't be surprised if poor Adelaide

41:55Yeah. Yeah, we were. Particularly. I went out and grabbed myself a Monte Carlo biscuit out there after the third goal in 190 seconds and I threw it against the wall. It is. Planned it everywhere. Yeah, it was. What was you with the biscuit and Tumi with a pen this year? So next year I have to wear a face mask. Get some more numbers as to why. Well, I mean they jumped out the blocks didn't they? And we spoke. And teams can do that. And we spoke about the response that Brisbane could do. Yeah, yes we did. And they did. Santa Bounce was always an issue for me. It's been an issue for me for majority of the year. They lost field position early. And in finals that's really important because we said in the pregame there's no better pressure than scoreboard pressure. And we saw it against Frio the night before. Did what did to John but to John's credit and they're pretty well drilled. They played a lot of finals. They understand you know about you know just hanging in there for that and it will turn and they're able to do that. The crows just weren't experienced enough. I don't think to be or mature enough to get themselves into that headspace.

42:58And then once that happened, there was just a sea of mistakes. You know, bloke's not committing to the contest. Falling over. Skeel errors. Taxes. Some mistakels. Some you know, disposal is just they're going to well, I haven't seen that. Well, I was at rank and like kicking a barrel up the middle of the ground. Yeah, like you're just seeing things that under pressure. Isn't it funny what pressure does to players and ultimately, you know, that first quarter they allowed Brisbane to play the way that they wanted to play. And we spoke about uncontested marks. That was always an issue. Let him add 30 in the first quarter. Nier enough's not good enough and we said about it in the call. All cool. You know, if you look and when we look behind the goals, we saw what Brisbane did to Adelaide. They gave them nothing. They were right. They were right on the. And you talk about the old school man on man. Adelaide just allowed that to happen, you know, which was disappointing. You'd like to think that that was up on the board.

43:59You know, I'd love to be a fly on the in the coaches room around. That you're surely we can't. You can say it in the call certainly in that first quarter. Well, that's not the coach. Yeah, that's not the coach. The coach goes to the coach. Yeah, those some of those things. In fairness to Nier. No, and I've got, you know, somewhat sympathetic to Nier. Because what I learn as a coach is when they win, it's the players and when you lose, it's the coach. Yes. And then you can. That's an old adage. It is. And the coach is responsible for setting the game up, getting the players into the into the headset. Mine said of how we want to play the game. And then you're the chess piece that you can move stuff around to try and get the result. It's up to them to be in the fight. And yeah, there was too few. Yeah. So Steve text in and said, look, the first five minutes of the game, Brisbane had a spare man at every contest. So to him, that says the problem was structural. And if the problem is structural, then that's a coaching error. Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not sure it was structural. What I thought, no, he said it in the call.

45:00They were that hungry to get around the ball. That was always the next one in all the time. So it looked like that. And even around stoppage, that Zach Bailey goal that kicked, you know, Barry was there and he had Will Ashcroft, which is staggering to think at a D50 stoppage that he's there going, hang on there's Zach Bailey and there's Locky Niel that will ask for to get to another one. So that would be, you know, one from the coaching perspective, what broke down. And that put an, and it could have been an interchange or something like that could happen. So you look at those things, but yeah, ultimately, you know, they got beaten the way that Brisbane won a play. I mean, and then if you have a look, you hold on it around tackle and pressure. Brisbane don't allow you to pressure because they own the ball. So like gave them 121 marks, which is just, you just can't let that happen. So that would be, so they had their lowest pressure rating game for the year 165. That was the best at 186. So as soon as the pressure dropped against the team like Brisbane,

46:00they just cut through because their skills are so good. And funnily enough, the last time they got around that number was against Brisbane earlier in the year when they smacked them up there that in that round seven game. They've got nine kids and they're nine better players here. The nine players need nothing, they need one point. Yeah, and Brisbane, you know, they're 176. So Adelaide didn't handle. It wasn't a high pressure game, but the perceived pressure because of the way Brisbane played, probably delved into that. And they said that number is actually affected because of their game that they appear. Well, they just couldn't get it back off them. So when the week before against Brisbane, the doggies was higher because they played a bit more of a handball game. So that invites the pressure to do it. So there's reasons around that. Tackling wise, if you have a look at that, they're normally around 100 cracks out it. Normally it's 61, you know, they have 64%. They only had 83 cracks at it. So once again, the kick mark doesn't allow you to tackle. So they couldn't get the ball off them.

47:01They just missed too many. Well, yeah. And so 12 broken tackles to 11. I went into that. So it's interesting. Before the last month, they went 11, 16, 13 and 12 missed tackles the last month, which is the highest they've had all year. So the last month was tracking in that direction for whatever reason. So there's an interesting one there. And then you talk about field position here. Coaches talk about, you know, we want to play a front half game. You hear that a lot. And a lot of that comes off. How well can we turn the ball over and get it back in? How do we set up behind the ball? And can we win clearance and get it in our front half? So against the Lions, they were minus seven minutes in their front half. So the Lions had the ball seven minutes more in their front half against that quality opposition. And why 69 entries? And I said it the week before against with the doggies without pre-gunnet last week. The doggies had 61. They had 61 and they played the game in their front half for almost 15 minutes.

48:01And that back six we hold it. Memm said, how good the back six they were great. But if that's going to happen against Brisbane next week, they give up 60. That's not going to be the case because they're just going to punish it. And 10 gold pants sure enough what it was. And then the uncontested marketing is so important. So you want to have your share of the ball. Essentially you want to try and be break even or a little bit more because you own the ball and and Adelaide play a bit that way. But against Brisbane, they had the ball almost 10 minutes more than what the crows had. So when you're playing against the best teams, the four to one, that's the that's the gap that they've got to try and get to because six and below, they're probably on par with those those finals teams. To take that next step, they've just got to be able to get that done. So many next post game said, none of this was a surprise. We planned for all of this. It was the execution of the players. So are you laying most of this at the fall at the feet of the players? Well, I think there's a good portion of it. Yeah, it has to be. Yeah, but once again, I'm not privy to how they set the game up.

49:02But you can sort of see and I'm looking at it from. My driver's is there. Many next post game said, none of that was a surprise. Told the players, this is what they want to do. Let's take this away from them and they couldn't do it. Yep. So this has to be laid at the feet of the players as we can. Yes. If everyone's put their figures at Nixie, it's same same. Well, and as you said it after it's that's a sum of all parts. There's a bit on the players. There's a bit on the coaches. There's a bit on system. Yeah, the position was pretty good. Brisbane, good to take. One thing I want to bring up about coaching. Yeah, I was pretty hot on this for the last month. Every time we interviewed an opposition team's coach, line coach, playing against Adelaide, I kept asking the question, gee, I sack rink and he's in rear form at the moment. Do you put someone to him? Team defense to me. Team defense. Then we went to Frio. What are you going to do with the tag? No, no, no. Team defense giants, no tag, Bulldogs, final. No, no tag. Team defense to me. Team defense. These were his numbers. The games are rich when he had 36 and kicked the goal.

50:05No tag, 39, kicked one goal, three. So Frio got away with him there. Giants, no tag, 35, four goals, Bulldogs, no tag, 34, two goals. Having massive influence and playing his best footy. Brisbane, we're going to tag. Yeah. And we're keeping you. I'm in one of the best. We're going to keep you to two positions. And no goals. And one shot on goal. Now that is the difference for me. Is that when people say team defense, I reckon they've gone all care no responsibility. Although they don't have that plan. Yeah. Yeah, it's not all care no responsibility. It's accountable. It's more can. It's a team ethos and I've been on both sides, Timmy in terms of that argument and match committee. I reckon we can get this done by if they've got to rely on Isaac Rankin and Jordan Dawson, which is what they do. We bet a bit deeper and we're happy to go down that path because I actually want four guys going through there because at some stage they've got to go off. So we can keep the momentum.

51:05The other side of it is, and I've always been one as a statistic, not necessarily the number, the impact. Because of tag guys that have only average 20. You know, it doesn't. So it's more of their impact is massive. Yeah. Huge. And this guy has impact. He's doing both. So they've got the luxury Brisbane that they've got a guy who plays that role better than anyone in the competition at the moment. There's probably another one in Sydney and in row bottom, I think he does a really good job as well. Even Jolong, you know, they've got guys that can play those. Yeah, Mullins and they've got O'Connor as well. That can play that balanced thought role. But what Brisbane, so good at, they've got so much talent and depth through the middle of the ground that they can absorb Josh Dunkley in terms of what he's doing around that now. That's no disrespect to Josh because he still has what he have on the weekends. Yeah, 23 and 8 score environments and 6 tackles and 14 contested positions.

52:05So he's warning his sleeves up. So he's first is he's covering you off. Two, he's winning his own ball and getting it out to the 8 grade is the Baileys and at the Ashtcross and these guys. Right. And he's saying, well, you're not having an influence on the game. So the discipline that he has through there, that just allows those other guys to go there. And unfortunately, Adelaide just don't have that depth. No, they don't have the depth in the midfield. It's been a problem for some time now. If you want to ask Campo a question about any number or impact, do a police. 8, there were 23, 00, 00. Every call that gets to where is on the standby list. Four grand final tickets. That player's going to come in at some stage and you're going to be exposed. You've got 20 hours around you. The ball's coming at you. Oh, you're just going to lay down and just cup it. No, this is a big thing. There's too many of those players. But it's not a premiership team in there. Promo ships are won by tough sides. 55:10Our coach and I have nothing personal against Nick. Don't know him. Seems like a good guy. Build a good culture. But against the best teams, he repeatedly fails. His record is 9, wins in 32 losses against the four top coaches. If you add long mirror in there, it's even worse. He's seven years into his tenure. On Saturday night after the game, I heard him say I'm confident with where we're at. So that's our head coach. After seven years, after an embarrassing finals lost, saying he's confident with where we're at. We've got the right people and the right roles. He also said we have great forward momentum as a football club. And we're building something quite special. Yep. Now, I'm pretty intelligent, but I can't say anything that we're building. All I can see is mediocrity. I see acceptance of mediocrity from the football club. And to be brutally honest, we're becoming as irrelevant in the competition of St. Kielder.

56:13We've got one scratchy finals win in a decade. And after a disaster performance like that, we get an email from the CEO, backing in the coach and the football program. And I think it's an absolute disgrace. Well, don't, Chris. Yeah, you will. Gooding's brother. That will and we'll verbalize that. And I think that a lot of people got to get disappointed about that in fear. Once again, though, you can't put it all on Nixie. Like one, the players who got to execute like that, they used to frustrate me as a coach. When you set the game up, you and then guys either don't absorb the informational car and execute, that's when you've got to make decisions based on your list. County execute under pressure. Games passing by. You can't, well, the other way he had what, 23 positions of minus meters gain. I mean, come on. Uh, next thing is development. But that's where we're getting left down. If I was, if I was completely honest, if I was looking for anyone for that role, I would be going hammer and tongs at Andrew Mackie. I'm always a pleasure. Firstly, excited about the role? Yeah, look, it's, I'm really excited. It was one of those ones that came out of the blue. Time is great. Traditional 40 Club. I've always had great respect for Port even when I played at North. Yeah, they're in a really, really good position and looking forward to the role. With the type of young players that are going to come into the club and the current ones that are there. In the key pillars of a Phil Club these days, how important do you reckon that development

1:07:25pillar is now? Oh, I look on that voice. Yeah, my too. I think it's pivotal. I think clubs now, given the draft process and all those sort of things. Development for me is not just the first, second, third years. I think development is the entire list and it's holistic, you know, like it's super important to be able to fast track your players as quick as they can to get up to AFL level and it's really important and we can see previously with Tasmania going after one of the best in Nigel up and so clubs are now now understanding how important it is. And as I said before, it's not for the first year player. It goes across your list because my belief is development is never linear. It's always ups and downs as a career and our job is coaches to try and bridge the gaps between a player's best and their and their worst. Yeah, good call.

1:08:25Will you head 100 for this role? Oh, I look like I'd been in contact. I obviously had a relationship with Ben and he had some boys in the talent pathway. So he reached out at different stages and just asked what I'd be interested to take the lead back into AFL land and that progressed and I know Josh. So yeah, it was sort of one of those ones that came out of the blue and progressed really quickly and the more I spoke to probably Ben and certainly and Josh the more real it become and at just the time it was brilliant both for me and hopefully for the club, given where the club's at and what they're about to go through and to me I get to stay in my home or in my state where my wife and my kids were born and raised. So it just made sense and I'm really grateful given the club port out of the list from our traditional perspective. You had a development and sample coach.

1:09:26It's a different model than we've had before. It's not too big a portfolio, is it? Well, every club will do slightly different to me. I had Adelaide, I did both. So every club across Australia and the AFL will go with a different model. There's no right or wrong. It just depends on where the club is at at that time. Probably the benefit for me doing it off-experienced before. Given we're going to bring a number of young players, it's able to give real clarity to the messaging, even that I'll be working a lot with them during the day and then just makes natural sense to be able to coach them on game day and keep it really calm and consistent around the messaging. But I'll have great support in around that program at a development play level with Matt Durgis, who'd been there for 12 months doing a wonderful job, putting together a really strong list of development players. Heath, congratulations. Look, I think it's a terrific appointment for port.

1:10:27I've seen your development and growth through the sample, but I can't help but feel a little bit ironic that the president of Port David Koch doesn't rate the sample as a development ground for his players yet they go and grab the state's samples. Number one, development coach and you, Heath, great. I mean, Heath, I just can't but feel the ironic sense of that. Did you hear his quote? I'll have him, but obviously it's been a discussion over a long period of time. Steven, all I know is, you know, I've only been a few days since the appointment. All I know is for the next two years we're in the sample and Mike's parents tells me we're doing the best job I can set up a program that can compete at sample levels the best I can. Now, hopefully my experience is evident to that and went out my time at another club and my job will be giving them the best environment for our players to develop. And for the next two years, that's in the sample and we'll be doing as good a job as

1:11:33we can to give them that opportunity. I know you will. People are ringing say, what did he say? Here's what David Corset on the 5.00.00. We're done. That's because the rules are impeding the development of our younger players. Do you think it does? You were now in charge of that. So from the top, they're saying it impede the development of your players. So you know both sides of the fence. What would you say to David? Well, I've had a chance to speak to David to be honest. As I said, I'm only new in. I'm not paid to make those decisions. All I'm paid to do is to set up a program that give our players the best chance. If the next two years that is in the sample and we'll be doing the best job I can to do that, look those guys who are making those comments. That's their job. It's above my pay. Pay grade to be fair. As I said, the next two years will play out and we'll go from there. But this discussion to be honest has been going on when I was at Adelaide.

1:12:35So it hasn't changed. We'll make those decisions as we go. Yeah, okay. And unfair, I mean, you bring that up. But it is so ironic, Keith, and I'm not trying to frame you or anything. I think you're going to be fantastic. You know where I come from. I rate this as a development ground, the sample. I think the best place have come out of this. So for him to say that, I'd be keen to see what your opinion was. So please don't feel that I'm trying to frame you. No. No, and you're right to ask that question. All I know is that I've been here for two-seat days. Two-seat days now. And I haven't even had a chance to really sit down. But my job is to give the AFL listed players the best program I can in consultation with the other coaches and staff to give them the best chance. I know what I do know. It's in the sample for the next three years. So that's fantastic. And we'll give our best account of that.

1:13:36Hey, on the back of that, have you got any views on how Port Adelaide do go about recruiting and handling contract applies? I think since it sort of occurred, which was 2014, that's 12 years now. And I would say that it's probably more and more difficult to try and get hold of those contract applies for both Adelaide and Port. Yeah, I think I've got a, yeah, look, I haven't been in it for a few years to me. But what I do know is the rules, the rules are a little bit easier when I first did it to be able to attract and contract some of these players. I have a personal view in that. For me, it's about trying to find the best players that have capability of playing lead 40 if given the opportunity now. Were there giving names like that, some of these players have left our system for whatever reason. Part of my opinion is trying to get them back in to sample level.

1:14:37And if that means for one or two years and then they go back to a sample club, that's we've done our job. And I'll, you know, in the past, PSC, more, Jimmy Matthews at Adelaide who went on to be able lead players at certain NORD post their time at Adelaide and become primary players. And I think that's just as important to try and give these guys the best available option to get back into sample 40. And if that's true, Adelaide or Porto, in my perspective, well, that's a great thing. And that's what we'll do. We'll just go and scale the earth to see if I can find the best available players in South Australia and get them back into the sample column. Do you assess the current list and what they need? Or is that already done by all the coaches in the exit interviews and the like and then you get all those notes and then work on that? Yeah. Well, I haven't had a chance to sit down with any of those guys at the moment. There will be all that we've done for the list management team.

1:15:41In relation to our contracted players or our development players, yeah, I've had a couple of conversations with Paul Stewart and a couple others about where they're at. And then I just start to pull on a couple of my contacts out there and see what other players we can attract. But from an IFAO, this perspective, Jason and Crips and Jeff Parker will be managing a way through that. No doubt they'll ask some questions. Given my role for last four years in the sample, I've got a pretty good understanding of the talent coming through. Excellent stuff. I think it's an absolutely critical preseason for our club and if we're to jump up quickly, it's going to be on this preseason. So all the best with it. Glad you're in the chair.
