It's March 18th. Here's what's happening around the world. Chief Justice John Roberts issued a strong warning Tuesday about personal attacks on federal judges, calling them dangerous and saying they have to. Stop. This came just days after President Trump described a judge who ruled against his administration as wacky, nasty, crooked, and totally out of control. Roberts made his comments at an event in Houston stressing that criticism of court rulings is fair game and even healthy. He drew a clear line at hostility aimed directly at judges themselves, no matter the political side. The judge who joined him on stage thanked Roberts for standing up for the judiciary, saying it means a lot. Threats against judges are on the rise too, with 564 reported in the last government fiscal year that ended in September, more than the year before. Congress has stepped up with extra security funding. Roberts has pushed back before. Last year, he rejected Trump's call to impeach Judge Bozberg over a deportation block.
Trump also blasted the Supreme Court and some of his own appointees after they struck down his global tariffs under emergency powers. Trump's allies are echoing the criticism. After a Boston judge halted a vaccine's policy shift, a top Justice Department official questioned the judge's string of overturned rulings and promised more appeals.
