0:00Before watching Resident Evil 5 Resident Evil Retribution, I couldn't tell you what this movie was about for all the bread and cheese in China, Mason. I couldn't tell you. My goodness. Yeah. Not even for all the umbrella bucks, which is presumably some sort of post-apocalyptic um, currency. Currency made out of pieces of an umbrella, yeah. Yeah, I know I probably couldn't do that either. Interesting. I just had no memory of... I knew it was the clones one, but beyond that, like, what is this one supposed to be, you know? I don't even know if I'd seen this one. You're gonna say surely I had. I don't know if you have seen it. Maybe I tapped out at four. Is this is five though, right? This is five or five. We've got... It's this one. We just got to get through this one. And then we've got one more, or we stop at five. Let us know in the comments. Should we just stop at five? We could... We stopped at one blade movie. That's right. We're never going to do any more blade movies. Well, we did promise we'd do another blade movie when the MCU makes a blade movie. And they haven't. I'm not talking about Deadpool versus Wolverine, by the way.

1:01Can you talk about those what if episodes where he was like, maybe blade night or whatever? That's what I'm talking about. Yeah, but they haven't made one of those, so I'm not worried about it, based at all. Terrific. If you've seen it, it's just an AI thing. It's not real. Don't worry about it. You can't convince me. Anyways, please leave a like for this one. Oh, yeah. I appreciate the little vlog that Alice does at the start to be like, okay, so this is what happened in the first movie. Yada, yada, yada, other movie shipping containers. It's very interesting. This one gets a recap. And I and I, but it's only the recap of the first movie. Really? It is. It's the recap of the first. Who's she talking to? Uh, her audience on YouTube. Is it us? Yes. I guess we are her audience on YouTube. All her subscribers. What else are you going to do on the post-apocalyptic future? If you're dad in one of those 3D wireframe bunkers or whatever. Is this a Vimeo exclusive? Yeah, it's a Vimeo exclusive. It's the only Vimeo on Vimeo is what it is. But it's interesting because this, initially I'm like, leave a like, we have to. Yeah, I know. Initially, I'm like, why is this one? Why is this one the one that gets the recap?

2:02And then, of course, we learn spoiler alert because it's in the opening titles. It's going to bring back several of the characters from Resident Evil 1. That's why, because they want to remind the audience of the characters from Resident Evil 1. But why? It's pointless. Because they could be anybody. Yeah. They're just, they're just mind... They don't have the same person out of this. They don't have any memories of her. They're just... They look, it's the same actors. And it's nice to see them again. It's nice to see Colin Salmon as one. James the one shade. James the one shade. I've forgotten that he was in this. Well, he's the one. He certainly is. Michelle Rodriguez is back as rain. And another... And another lady. Which is a facet. It's a facet. Again, it's a fascinating idea because, of course, one is, you know, that we learn that umbrella has been taking DNA fragments and cloning various people for various reasons. They've built underground bunkers where they manufacture a whole town or a city or whatever. You know why? And they populate it with people and they give them all memories and they give them stuff to do and jobs and families or whatever.

3:03And then they just... Drop the T-virus on them or whatever. Just to see what'll happen. You know what's gonna happen. You already know what's gonna happen. It's been the apocalypse for a while now. Why are you still doing this? We've determined that if we drop the T-virus, it would kill everybody in the world and turn it into zombies. Yeah, it'd happen already. You don't have to keep testing this. Honestly. But yeah, so what we learn is that they've been doing this. So there's a bunch of colon salmons out there and a bunch of Michelle Rodriguez is out there. Yeah, they're gonna hang it off racks like it's fucking dry cleaning. Exactly. And so I'm like, oh, that's quite interesting. What's gonna happen when... That's interesting. That's interesting. What's gonna happen when, you know, seasoned soldier Michelle Rodriguez meets suburban, you know, a girl boss Michelle Rodriguez. Nothing, because they don't. But that would also be expensive. They'll be like Jet Lees the one speaking of. Where you fly, Jet Lees the one. Split, the split screen would be expensive. And the split diopter, are you kidding me? Oh my god. You know? Ugh. Yeah. And then you're like, oh, but maybe, you know,

4:03Michelle Rodriguez's character gets another chance to live. No, she double dies. Spoiler alert. Yeah. One of them gets dragged down into a frozen lake by some zombies and the other one, the suburban one just gets thrown into a big, big stone thing and cracks out open and dies. Yeah. Pretty cool. And she was the one that was like, I don't even like gods. I'm a liberal. I went to liberal arts college. I'd rather smash my head into a big stone monument or sort of a building or whatever the user guard. Oh, I did. Hooray. Hooray. You know the opening of this? Yes. So it opens pretty much exactly where the last one ends where the umbrella corporation are converging on that that big ship where all the people came out of, including Kmart. And it's in reverse. Yes. And I'm like, okay, something has happened around this time. And this movie was edited by Niven Howie, which is an obviously backwards name. It'd be Howie Niven, surely. Absolutely. It works. Suspicious. Suspicious.

5:03Fake name. Probably Paul W. S. Anderson did this. But anyway, what happened in what happened in time? Well, yeah. So I was thinking, yeah, what's a popular thing that might have happened around this time, the Paul W. S. Anderson talk? Because he does the Mortal Kombat X-ray bone breaking as well. Yeah, he does. Which came out the year before, this is the first trailer for Dead Island from 2011. Do you remember that one? Okay, and this came out in 2012. Exactly. Okay, so it was boiling and bubbling in his head for a few months. Oh, yeah. Let's do Dead Island. Okay, that was zombies, yeah. That was zombies. Wow, wow, wow, wow. Even though there's no zombies in that opening, I think, because it's just, just guys, isn't it? Jiro copters and Jiro copters. Jumping and it's boiled. Chill Valentine. I love you, don't recognize it as Jill Valentine. And I don't recognize anybody in this stuff, you know? So umbrella hat previously had made fake multiple city block sized versions of New York and Moscow and Japan. Japan and whatever. Which is the one we saw in Resident Evil Ghost in Japan, I guess.

6:04Yes, but that was the real one. Oh, this is recreating that. Even, okay. Because remember, they crash land into that at the start. Yeah. Because the facility is underground. But doesn't this one have exactly the same guy that gets bitten by a zombie in a... Nice. Like literally exactly. Bones, man. Pay attention. Okay. All right. But yes, it does. And the same zombie lady that does it... To the exact same guy. Yeah. And the initial reason they did this and this is before the outbreak is because they were demonstrating to the different powers of the world, what it would do on a population, on a, like a... To their nemesis. Yes. Unlike a highly urbanized environment. And then they sold it to all the different factions of the world. And that's how the TVI started. So it wasn't... I'm sorry, I probably bought theirs to drop it on New Zealand. Probably. Yeah. I'm okay with that. Yeah. So it wasn't one outbreak. No. It was a series of outbreaks. It was an arms race. But yeah, like you said, they're still doing it. And so they're running these billion dollar survival scenarios

7:04for nobody. It's bizarre. Well, you know, they got the budget for it. And if they don't spend the budget that year, they drop the budget next year. So you got to do it. In fact, you do it. And then you're like, no, we could do it with a few more blocks next year. A Russia or whatever. Yeah, what do I like? I like our own. Yeah. This also, I feel like, is kind of... It's just like a remake or homage of the first movie. Mm-hmm. And one of the reveals in this initially was going to be that that team that went underground in the first one, they were clones. Right. And these were the... So these, this movie might be the originals. It's never said, but I think it is an expanded media that everybody... Yuck expanded media. Great. And not the games. I'm talking about the novelization of like these movies. Is it everybody who pretty much works around Braille? He's a clone. That's why they... Because why would you? You would just, you know, not, I guess. You just, you just, not just don't. Anyway, so Alice, you know, there's a fake Alice and then she killed, she's killed by Jazz, a daughter or whatever. But then the real Alice... I kept it up, I was gonna say, but that's actually an interesting idea, right?

8:04Yes it is. What has happened here is that Paul W. S. Anderson is like, oh wait, we went for movies. We didn't give Alice any character development. Let's do it now. Yeah. And then throw it away later, I guess. What I thought was quite good in this and, you know, the... I think the best part of the movie probably is the bit at the start where An Alice wakes up and she's like a suburban housewife and she's got bangs and she's got a husband, oh, dead fairs come back. He's back. And they've got a daughter and then all of a sudden it's like, it's like suburban, you know... It's dawn of the dead. It's dawn of the dead. It's suburban, it's dawn of the dead and she doesn't have any skills because she doesn't know how to do a big jump in a kick and she doesn't have two guns, even though that's the law. She's broken the law here. And I like that. I like that it felt very, you know, there were some shots in there that were like reminiscent of psycho, I thought. Sure. It's kind of interesting and fun. And then I like the idea that, oh, and then this character died, she's not real, but the daughters has survived. So maybe we're going to give Alice a sort of Ripley and aliens kind of... Yeah.

9:05Maybe we're just bang out aliens in five minutes. That's exactly right. And then they like that. It really is like that because we'll pull W.S. Anderson, he directed an aliens movie. That's true. He did the best one, Alien vs Predator. The best Alien vs Predator movie. I don't think that's it. I think it is true. So there's kind of new-ish or evolved zombies in this one of them is a big liquor that cocoons people. Yes. And it takes the little girl at one point after she clings onto Alice and she's like, you're my mom, and Alice is like, absolutely sure. Sure. Good as Annie. Yeah. Or you can just pick one of these off the rack. That's... Doesn't have to be bad. We can dress her up, how we like. But yeah, it's also the return of the nude wake-up, which a resident evil loves. Alice has been imprisoned wearing a prison jumpsuit made out of two pieces of A3 paper. How innovative. And, you know, if you spend all your budget on rebuilding Moscow, block by block, yeah. I guess that's all you have left for prison uniform. You've got to cut costs, don't you? That's true. Also, Albert Wesker is alive? Yes.

10:05It explosioned. He explosioned, I guess. But in one of those serious explosions, like one of those cataclysmic explosions. Yeah. Also clones and whatever. And he probably grew back from his smirk. He probably did. But he's now a good guy, and he wants to work with Alice. That's... You've been so easily tricked, Jack. I've said, I've seen the entirety of this movie, and by the end he is the president, and he is a good guy, I think you'll find. But the red queen in this is now the villain who's the hologram AI girl. And she's put together the sweet dream team of like, you know, of previous resident evil members. Sure. So now we get new characters, because Wentworth Miller couldn't return as Chris Redfield. Uh-huh. Game characters I'm talking about. We get Ada Wong. And Leon S. Kennedy. I-Ida with a signature grappling hook, I guess. Yeah. That's from Resident Evil 4, and others probably. Well aware. So that's Lee Bingbing. Yes. Oh, who's a famous actor, by the way? A great. She's in the Meg, I think. One of the Meg movies, or both of the Meg movies, I don't remember. All the dialogue is dubbed by Sally K. Hill,

11:07who voices her in the video games because of her accent. And you can, that's very noticeable. That's interesting. And it's interesting that they actually gave some work to somebody who worked on the games. For once? Yeah. Well, they nearly gave work to somebody else who worked on these games. We'll get to it later. Okay. But we got to, we got to, we got to Leon. By-by that guy. Johan Erb. And we get Barry Burton. Yes, we do. Played by Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant is here. What's he up to, man? No, I'm always fascinated by what he's up to. What's he up to? He was like a nice fellow, you know? He's in Planet of the Apes and whatever. That's true. He was the blob or whatever. Yeah. Yeah, man. Leon Kennedy. I mean, I'm a big fan of the character. Mm-hmm. But like, I got- He's not beautiful enough. He's not beautiful enough. Wasn't Leon Kennedy famously like, wasn't he designed by the female staff at Capcom to be the most beautiful man they could think of? Absolutely. That's what I want to talk about. Like more objectification. More objectification. I guess this guy's handsome, but he's not like- He's not like, he couldn't be in BTS, could he? No. But Leon Kennedy could be in BTS.

12:08Definitely. Is that what it is? BTS? Yeah, behind the scenes. That's right. I agree. He's not- I mean, he's fine. As anybody who comes into- But not fine. Yeah, I think the hair doesn't work on him and in live action. Yeah. Because it's like, you would never grow that out of this world. You'd get grabbed immediately or get pulled into a weird propeller or something. And it's not long enough to like, man-bunnet. It's too long at the front, but yeah, but not long enough to man-bunnet. It needs to be probably needed an inch off the front at least, Mason. Get in your eyes. Get in your eyes. Are you trying to two-gun something? Bang, bang, bang. Exactly. Anyways, got signature Leon S. Kennedy clothes, which I enjoy. Mason, the setting of this the entire movie is actually set underground in Russian Siberian places. Wow. And you know that because the elevator down there has a giant USS R flag on it, which also is the wrong flag for this fucking era. But whatever, Mason, I guess because the real Russian flag now, it's not identifiable. Mm-hmm. We've been like, what's this? What's this supposed to be? And you know what Mason?

13:09It's boreshed. Boreshed. It's just a picture of boreshed on a flag. You know, I love 3D maps. And it becomes a 3D map and goes back to live action. In this movie, man, I'm just fuck, I'm sick of it. It's- Wow. There's one thing that's broken me, I'm like, okay, enough. You nailed this already two or three movies ago. This is devastating to be actually to get to the point of your life. That's a great lover of the wireframe transition from computer world to real world. Yeah. You should have been- you should have been this movie's number one defender. I thought I'd come in here and you'd be like, and don't you still love that? No. Wow. I do not love it. You're a broken man. I am a broken man. Anyway, they all- there's other zombies in this as well. There's- Sorry, half-wearing zombies. Yeah, so- Soviets is on be on a motorbike. Soviets are on- I think they're two cartoon-like in this. Yeah. They're almost like left for dead kind of- What's the one where they're all in the mall, the video game, and the boss is all around. Whatever that one is. Uh, uh, Ball Zombie Man. No, I'm going to think of it. It's called, uh, Survive the Mall. No. I thought picture perfect, but that's not what's called.

14:10Run around. I'm going to look it up. You've got a bike in a chainsaw or a stick. Is that a Capcom game as well? I think so. Dead rising. Dead rising. God, it's obvious. Picture perfect. Yeah, I think picture perfect as far as I'm concerned. So Paul W. Asanderson was watching some BTS for this. Oh yes. And he said that the reason the zombies can now ride bikes and cars and do weapons, he just, he said, because they're mutating. Which is also the thing they were trying to do in other movies. Remember, they were experimenting on them to get them to do like, mean-y old times. Zombie butlers. But now they can drive fucking gear shifts in motorbikes and, yeah, like, communicate. But can you point them in any direction or do you just give them equipment and just let them lose? I think you just put them in a room with a bunch of stuff and you see what they gravitate towards. I looked at ones. That one's learning to Pogo Stick. Well, incorporate that into our military maneuvers. Pogo Stick Zombie. So it's like raising a kid where you give them a whole lot of different options. Yeah. So whether they want to... Different knives and guns and stuff. And having a machinery. Yeah. Oh, also, big axe hammer guys back and... He's got a brother. He's got a... Or clones or whatever? Or boyfriend girlfriend?

15:11They could be boyfriend girlfriends. Yeah. I love the comically sized nail through one of their heads. Like, it looks like a cartoon, Tom and Jerry fucking nail. Right. That's a short live scenario, isn't it? Also, still no explanation is why they've done this. No. I guess it mostly worked last time. It's just what you're gravitating towards. You're driving a nail through your head and you're running around with a big axe. That's probably true. Ah, this movie's also really boring. And it looks bad. There's a moment... Well, it's filming in three days, yeah, no. There's a moment when they drive a... I think it's a limousine or something. It's on down there. Down and into the... Into the Moscow subway station. That looks terrible. Nothing's there. Sometimes it is real as well, which is... Baffling. And that's hard to look at when it's real and that it's not. When it cuts between. And some of your favourites are getting killed off, man. Like the guy from the previous movie who we didn't talk about is survived. Famous character, Luther West. Yeah, sure. I think he's related to Frank West from Dead Rising. Dead Rising. Do you think they're related? I think they're related. Yeah. Yeah, I think they're married.

16:12Well, it's great. That's great. Yeah, he is back, isn't he? Yeah. It's funny. They run around and they get out of the facility and whatever. But then... See, that's it. The movie's just them running around. There's nothing creative or exciting. Yeah. They're just running around from one nation to the other. They even have the laser corridor sort of. Yeah. But the fuck are we doing with this laser corridor? I'm sorry. You were the one world's number one laser corridor defender a few movies ago. Mason, I'm currently getting one installed behind my red light sauna. Terrific. I'm thinking of combining them both. That's right. You do a cold plunge and then you defeat the laser grid corridor all the way. And then you're ready to... You're ready to face the day. You certainly are, yeah. So they all get out of whatever. And then there's a big confrontation. So Jill Valentine is also in this. Yeah, but also it's not a big confrontation. It's worse. Yeah, it is. It's more. It's so... They even... You mentioned they got the giant liquor. You're not going to end the movie with them fighting the giant liquor. No, you're going to end up fighting Jill Valentine and Michelle Rodriguez, I guess. But there's the moment where she gives herself that virus and Leon's like, I'm from Reservable 4.

17:12That's the last plug-us from Reservable 4. And I'm like, damn, this movie has everything. And it's the same time. Nothing. Nothing for anyone. But also, this was the point in the movie where I went, oh, I haven't seen this. Yeah. I would have... I realized I've seen the trials. I also realized in 2012, I was living in a remote part of Australia. And there was no cinema. So I definitely not seen this. This is the moment I, in the cinema, said that. I'm like, no, I haven't seen this. I haven't seen this. I haven't seen this. Yeah. Michelle Rodriguez, she's invincible until she's not because of ice and whatever. A cult plunge. Yeah, the cult plunge. She should have started over the cult plunge in a laser grid. Yeah. And then maybe a green smoothie. And then she would have survived the cult plunge later. Easy no problem, not a problem. But she didn't stretch. But she's got punch in the heart powers. She does get punch in the heart and then you see the heart and the heart stops. Powers. Just add in, just, just shavelessly adding stuff and going, you like this and another thing, don't you? Yes. Also, why is it green? Great question. Bones aren't green.

18:14But these are resident evil bones, so. Exactly right. Just to say what is green and what is not. And finally, someone kicks that fucking thing off to your Valentine's chest. Yeah, which they should have done. Come on, man. 90 minutes ago. Come on, yeah. Ridiculous. She's not even in the next movie. There's like no payoff for this but all. God, and also, and then Leon and Ador are in love. They're like, oh, these, because they're a couple in the game sort of all they like each other of the games. And how much screen time to actually share in this movie? I think the end, like the final conversation and the end when he puts his hand on a lake. And she's like, don't. Yeah. We only know each other and our boyfriend and girlfriend in the games. In real life. No, stop this. They also might not be boyfriend and girlfriend in the game. In real life, I find you old and ugly. Wow. Yeah. You don't find him BTS? I don't find him BTS. Damn, man. I don't even find him quickly Google's BTK. Second, he's not even the BTK killer. I don't even find him straight kids or 17.

19:15You don't? Nope. Wow, man. That's crazy. Yeah. Anyways, there's summoned to the, to the Oval Office. Yes. Where the president is there. Regular president? Mason, I mentioned this earlier. You know it's not the regular president. It's, it's Albert Wesker. Okay, but how could it be any worse than the regular president? Oh, oh. There we go. All right. That is. Things are heating up. It is the political satire alert. That's going off. We did it, folks. I thought the twist was going to be, and it probably is in the next movie, that the red hologram girl was good and he was evil. Because he's fucking Albert Wesker. Yeah. And he's always the bad guy. But he gives me a joke of itcha. Resented evil powers back. That's right. Which is her mind pushing abilities at whatever I should. I think big and strong and fast and running around and kicking dog. Yeah, that's right. But things are getting really hectic at the White House because there's, so being stormed upon and whatever. Anyway, so we talk about every week, but like what's memorable? What's the thing you know from this?

20:15And I think it's clones? I think it's just this is the clones one. Yeah, but I thought a previous one was the clones one as well. Like that doesn't jump out at me. I guess it's. Some of them are the clones one. I guess it's X-ray Mortal Kombat punches. But that's from Mortal Kombat. I'm for me it is I think Soviet, Kremlin guard with the furry hat on the motorbike with the rocket launcher or whatever. I guess that's it. And then driving down their car down into the Moscow subway system, which looks terrible. It's a good bit though. It's a good bit, isn't it? Yeah. I think this is the this is one of the least memorable ones. Absolutely. I mean also because I didn't remember whether I'd seen it or not, but just even looking back now I'm like, but what's good? The mother daughter relationships are right. It's there's something there. And is that going to be carried off over into the next movie? I don't know. I doubt it. The kids just going to be gone, right? Yeah. Even or whatever. Yeah. Or written off in a novelization as characters often are. I'm going to do a whole segment next week on the characters that just disappeared from

21:15these movies and what apparently happened to them. Terrific. I guess it's the backwards bit at the start. That's the memorable bit, right? From that from that island. From that island. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, you know what's time for? What's the time for? It's trivia time. Resident Evil 5. Don't mind if I do trivia section. Wow. This movie's called Resident Evil Retribution. And we're getting retributed on? This is some nonsense if you ask me. But also like as we've talked about every week, this could be the name of any of these movies, really. Yeah. Anyways, Kevin Durand is in this. I know we mentioned it, but I just want to mention he does kill James the One Shade. Which is a hell of a maneuver. Because they've got a classic rivalry, don't they? Yeah. You know? They've been setting this up since the first movie that he's going to be killed by Barry

22:18Burton. That James One Shade is going to be killed by Barry Burton. And it's so satisfying. It is. Because they've had this rivalry and Barry Burton's always been like, I'm going to get you James One Shade. Yeah. Isn't it bizarre that these don't really build to anything? They don't build to anything. Like there's no, what's the backstory that we're like clinging on to? It's not like Michelle Rodriguez got betrayed in the first movie and now she's back for revenge or whatever. But then there's also another version of her that's quite nice and you're like, oh, what could it have been if she wasn't betrayed by Alice in the first movie? None of that's there at all. She did say it's thrown to the ground and she dies. She's just one's just there and she's like, I don't know who you are and I'm going to fire this gun. Because that's my job. Bang, bang, bang, bang. I'm Colin Salmon. I'm here as well. He's there as well. Oh, no. Well, while filming a fight scene with Miller, Joe, which a misappoccurred causing 16 actors to fall off a scaffolding and they were sent to hospital, how does that even have? What kind of fucking dominoes are scenario? Are we setting up here? Right.

23:18That was the scene where Alice and one of her clones are trying to get a big pane of glass across the road in Moscow and then in a series of... And then a Rube Goldberg machine goes off. Yeah. So they went to hospital and there was shutdown for a few days and Miller, Joe, which actually visited some of the actors. It says some and not all of the actors at the hospital. I'm an opera actor, so you haven't been injured. That's his picture, right? Yeah. It's weird as well, because they were all packed into the one bed. She got halfway across. She was like, now I'm tired of this. Yeah, bad. I'm tired of giving a little kiss on the forehead. Yeah, one of my guys was going to climb across this bed. I've kissed Colin Salmon on the forehead. Oh, he was a kissed Michelle Rodriguez on the forehead. She was a block two. Yeah, I'm now, I'm leaving. This is the first dogless resident evil movie. Oh, dogs. It's dogless. Wow. Yeah, what do you think of that? It's a suburban mom, Alice, one of those molasses covered dogs. Just as a pet dog and they don't reference it, but it's just a very nice molasses dog. I love you molasses, dog. Yeah. No, man. Dogless. There was consideration that we're going to dub the Leon S. Kennedy character as played

24:19by Johan O. Because he's an Estonian actor and he moved to the slash model and he moved to the US when he was like 17. Okay. And they didn't end up doing that, but one of the actors that auditioned was Matt Mercer, who had voiced Leon S. Kennedy in various media. There it is. And they even used his voice as reference to be like, can you do this? Right. But he didn't get chosen. Even though he is, often but not always Leon S. Kennedy. So they dubbed Ada Wong, but they didn't dub her on again off again boyfriend, fake boyfriend. Yeah. They've just met Leon Kennedy. Correct. That's crazy. Yeah, great. You know what I mean, funny. Mm-hmm. You give him a romance, but only in the subtitles. Yeah. All right. And then, the boy friend Leon Kennedy, she could say, you know, but don't touch me. Don't touch me. The fake name of Alice's husband played by Odette Fair. Mr. Alice's husband. It's not revealed in the film, but in the novelization novelization. His name's Todd. Todd. Todd Fair. Todd Fair. What's the character's name in Carlos?
