Entertainment story is making news on March 19th. A survivor named Roshona Landfair is sharing her story of abuse by R Kelly and a new book called Who's Watching Shorty. She says it started when she was just 12 years old and lasted 13 years. The former singer is now serving 20 years in prison on child pornography charges, running at the same time as his 30-year sentence for, racketeering and sex trafficking from 2021. Landfair first met Kelly as a young fan and he quickly began grooming her. By age 13, things turned sexual with phone calls, and soon after she lost her virginity to him, he pushed her into grubing counters with other underage girls, using sex as a way to control her. Whenever she pushed back or hesitated, Kelly would punish her to keep her in line. He mixed gifts like shopping trips, a car, and even a puppy with strict rules. She had to call him daddy, avoid looking at other men, skip revealing clothes, and ask permission just to use the bathroom.
Earlier this decade, Landfair testified anonymously as Jane Doe No. 4 in his Chicago trial, helping convict him on child exploitation charges. Back in 2008, though, he beat a similar child pornography case where she had stayed silent. Landfair, now a school health counselor, says the book helps her reclaim her life from the shame. She describes how Kelly discarded her after that earlier trial when he no longer needed her silence. This episode is brought to you in partnership with our sponsor.
