Bulwark Takes is made possible by:
Republicans spent their midterm convention warning that communists are coming for America. Will Saletan runs their own definition of “communism” against Donald Trump’s promises of $5,000 checks, government stakes in private companies, admiration for China, and even his jokes about being “the greatest communist in history”—and finds the GOP’s argument collapsing under its own weight.

You know when people try a new food and suddenly it's like, okay, hold on, I got a new favorite food. That's the reaction a lot of people are having when they first try Kupy Mayo. Yeah, it's the one with the red cap and the little baby on the bottle. You've probably seen it at the grocery store. And this mayo is different. This mayonnaise uses whole eggs. Kupy only uses egg yolks, which gives it this rich umami flavor. It's smoother, deeper, almost buttery.
Once people try it, they start putting it on everything. Egg sandwiches, fries, burgers, chefs use it, restaurants use it, people who really care about flavor use it. Put it on just about anything. Then you'll understand. Kupy, the original Japanese mayonnaise. Hey, it's Will Salitan from the Bullwork and I just heard a joke that I got to tell you. The joke is that Republicans just held a convention, a phony midterm convention, to warn America that communists are trying to take over our country. And then their own president, Donald Trump, got up and gave the most communist convention speech any Republican has ever done. So I want to take you through this total fiasco and show you how embarrassing it was. Now I'm not going to make you watch every time the Republicans mentioned communism or socialism or Marxism at this phony convention because they did it 148 times.
I kid you not. But I do want to show you one of those times because this one's just too funny to pass up. Lisa McLean, she is the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference and she was trying to talk about the Democrats. President gentlemen, this isn't your dad's communist party or Democrat party, excuse me. This is communism. Your dad's communist party. Look, there's a reason why she screwed up that line. She has no idea what she's talking about. Communism is just a word that these guys throw around and it turns out that when they try to define that word, they're talking about their own president. OK, here's an example. On Thursday at this so-called convention, Scott Besent, the Treasury Secretary, gave a speech about the dangers of socialism. The radical left is relentless in their pursuit to remake America in the image of every socialist
hellscape of the last century. Their big government giveaways would end as they always do, always do, and food shortages, deadly delays in medical care and squalid housing. OK, so according to Besent, socialism means big government giveaways. But here's the punchline. The punchline is what happened right there on that same stage an hour and a half later. If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our economic tremendous economic success, like in history, we've never had anything like what's happening, but because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.
$5,000. Their own president, Donald Trump, gets up on stage and says he's going to give everybody $5,000. That is a trillion dollar big government giveaways. That is what his own Treasury Secretary just called socialism. And where's Trump going to get all this money? Well, here's an answer. Terrace. Watch what happened the next day when a reporter asked the president this question. So Mr. Trump, last night you proposed Trump dividends giving every American $5,000 American citizen if they have adult citizens $5,000. And I'm wondering would Congress need to approve that? Well we think not. I think they will do it if we needed it, but we think not. The country is doing so well. We've taken in trillions of dollars in tariffs and other things. Okay.
First of all, Trump just said in that answer that he can give out this trillion dollars without consulting Congress. That is literally unconstitutional. Only Congress has the authority to spend money. But see, Trump doesn't care about the Constitution. He thinks like a communist ruler. Not some some fantasy benevolent communist like Karl Marx had in mind, but a real life corrupt communist boss. Trump thinks that he personally can send out $5,000 checks in his name. And he just told you that he's going to get the money from tariffs. Our taxes, their taxes on all the stuff you buy. He's taking your money through these tariffs and then he's giving some of it back to you, but only if you vote for his party. He is a straight up communist thug, but it's not just tariffs.
Check out what Trump told Laura Angrom when she asked him about these magical $5,000 checks. There are a lot of people think I don't even need congressional approval because we've made so much money. We're making, we're taking in money, even like TikTok. We got a fee. Me. I got a fee for a country, $10 billion. In Intel, I made, I didn't buy. I said, if I'm going to help you meaning if the country is going to help you, I want 10% of the company. They're calling that mega socialism in the New York Times. I know what it is. It's real entrepreneurship. That's really what it is. I see that. See, I don't need Congress, he says, because he personally is taking in money by charging fees and taking a percentage of companies. So it's tariffs and fees and nationalizing industries. And then he says, oh no, that's not socialism.
That's entrepreneurship. This message is brought to you by function. So September is world Alzheimer's month and it got me thinking about something I probably should have thought about sooner, which is my brain health. I don't want to wait until brain frog or lack of focus just feels like a normal part of getting older. I wanted to know my numbers right now. Well, I can actually do something with that information. That's why I like function. You get access to 160 plus lab tests and some of the results can give you insights into things like brain health. For example, the omega-3 index is tied to brain cell health and cognitive performance. And the MMA can show you whether your body has enough active beach wealth to support nerve function and mental energy. And if you want to go further, function members can add advanced tests, including tests looking at Alzheimer's risks and markers associated with neurodegeneration. For me, it's really just about testing, not guessing, having more information about what's happening inside my body so I can make more informed decisions. Check your brain health the way I do.

Let me show you what Donald Trump himself said a couple of months ago about offering everybody free stuff to win an election. I'd be honest. I think I'd be the greatest communist in history. I'd give free rent. I think it's free food. Everything is free from this point forward. Everyone's going to vote for me. Everyone's going to vote for me, he said, I'd be the greatest communist in history. That was in June. And then in July, he said it again. This is at a NATO summit. Watch Marco Rubio and Pete Higgs, they're standing right next to Trump. The communism is easy to sell. I would be the greatest communist in history. I'd be right up there with Lenin. I'd be as good as anybody.
You've got free rent for the rest of your life. Look at those guys. Rubio and Higgs, are laughing. They thought it was hilarious. That Trump was saying he'd be the greatest communist in history. They thought it was a joke. And then he did it. At that phony convention. Last week, he did exactly what he said in those clips. He offered people free money so everyone would vote for him. Oh, but that doesn't really make him a communist, right? I mean, to be a real communist, Trump would have to do what Karl Marx talked about, right? He'd have to seize the means of production. I mean, take it from Senator Ted Cruz. He spoke at this phony Republican convention and he explained that this is what makes Zora and Mamdani the mayor of New York a communist. When Mamdami says he wants to seize the means of production, he means it.
We must stand and fight for freedom. We must stand and defeat the communist. And Trump said the same thing in his speech at the convention. One of the Democrats top congressional candidates is a self-described Marxist. Another quote's Karl Marx saying she wants to seize the means of production. You know, that's odd because in that same speech, Trump bragged about a meeting in which he told the CEO of Intel to hand over 10% of the company. I said, give the United States of America 10% of Intel and I'll get this problem solved for you. He stood up immediately and he said, you have a deal and I said, I should have asked for more. There's so much. I said to my guys, what the hell is wrong with me? But anyway, I should consent, but that was worth 12 billion. So in one meeting, I picked up 12 billion. I should have asked for more.
He says, Trump took 10% of Intel for the US government. He seized 10% of the company, the means of production, right? And he says he should have taken more. Oh, oh, but come on. 10%, that's nothing, right? Real communists, they would take a lot more than that, right? Like for example, communist China, the Republicans say they would never want to be like China. One to Dan Patrick, he's the lieutenant governor of Texas and here he is speaking at this convention. Make no mistake. Democrat communist and socialist are coming after everything you have and everything you and your family will ever have. Meanwhile the Democrats want us to look like California. Or Russia or China. Oh, those dastardly Democrats, they want us to look like China, right?
You know who literally says he wants us to look like China? Trump, here he is at the convention talking about how he wants the White House to look more like what they have in China. So I'm giving you a ballroom free of charge, okay? That's all I can tell you. And it will be the most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world. It'll be the best. You know we have the president of China coming in two weeks, you know, I get along great with him. So we're building something that's going to be the most beautiful anywhere in the world when I was in China they have a building. It's called the Great Hall of China. It's a serious hall. This is a very large hall, but we're going to top it. Oh, we're going to top it. Those communist bosses in China, they have an amazing Great Hall. And we, we are going to build a big ballroom for our boss that's even more impressive. And Trump doesn't just want to look like China.
He says we act just like China. He says we are no better morally than they are. And you have to understand for everything they do, we do also, you know, somebody who's saying about China, what about China? We hear this fine. We spy in them to it goes. Okay, but to be fair, we are still a democracy, right? We don't really serve a communist party or an autocrat like they do in China, right? I mean, that is what Mike Lapitri, one of the Republicans who's running for Congress, that's what he said at the convention. While the Democrats choose the DSA, we Republicans choose the USA. And we are the party that will always remind the world that in this country, there's room for only one flag, one allegiance, and one great American comeback. One flag, one allegiance, he says. We Republicans, we are not socialists, we support the USA.
But you know, who's not so hot on the USA? Donald Trump. We are never going back to where we were just two years ago when our country was an embarrassment. Our country was an embarrassment. Our country was an embarrassment. It doesn't sound super patriotic, does it? And Trump didn't tell the audience at that convention to pledge allegiance to the flag. He told them, he told them to pledge allegiance to him. Please raise your right hand. I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States. I am going to go out and I'm going to get my friends and my family. And we are going to vote on November 3rd.
So help me, God. Whoa. Whoa, indeed. Look, that's the kind of thing that you might hear at a fascist convention or a communist convention. Except, except it is true that Trump was telling people to vote for his party. He still have elections in this country. And that is a big difference between the United States, between us and the communists, right? I mean, that's what Laura Trump, the president's daughter-in-law, told us last week. Take Cuba. Fidel Castro was viewed as a hero, a savior. He was an communist. He was a democratic nationalist. Sound familiar? He promised free speech, free press, and free elections. But then he got a little power and all that changed. And to solidify his control over the people he promised to help, he ended democratic elections. Here's the thing about communism. Once you vote it in, it's tough if not impossible to vote it out.
She's right. That is what fascists and communists always do. Once they get power, no more free elections. But you know who's trying to end free elections in this country? You know who tried to use violence to overturn the only election he lost? And he still doesn't accept that he lost that election. Here is what Trump said at this convention about the election he lost in 2020. When I'm in the ticket, Republicans always do very well. We won the presidency three times, and we won. This is one of the most important elections of your lives. Only superseded by our victories in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Three grades, Victor. And then on Saturday, he repeated that lie in a speech in Ireland. And then we had a rigged election, as you know, it was totally rigged.
But because I won three times, I didn't win twice, I won three times. Look, the bottom line is all this garbage, the Republicans are putting out about communism and socialism. It's all bullshit. They don't mean a word of it. They sat there while their own president gave the most communist speech ever given at a Republican convention, and they applauded it. They don't give a damn. They don't give a damn about trillion dollar giveaways or ending free elections or seizing the means of production, as long as their guy is the one who's doing it. See you next time. Research shows that social connection is important for happiness. And something that research comes back to again and again is that the little moments together matter more than we think. And that's why I'm such a big fan of rituals. Think about the glassware you use for all your dinner parties, ones that make your events feel right without even thinking about it.
