Replace Suspicion With Inquiry

About this episode

It's easy to fill in the blanks when you don't have all the information.

Someone doesn't respond, so you assume they're upset.

A friend acts differently, so you assume something is wrong.

You hear part of a story, and your mind creates the rest.

Suspicion feels like protection.

But sometimes it's simply uncertainty wearing the mask of certainty.

Replace Suspicion With Inquiry explores what happens when we stop assuming we know someone's intentions and start asking better questions.

Suspicion creates a story before you have the evidence.

Inquiry leaves room for another explanation.

Instead of asking, "Why are they doing this to me?" try asking, "What else could be happening here?"

Instead of assuming someone meant something negatively, ask what they actually meant.

Instead of building an entire argument around an unanswered message, wait for more information.

This doesn't mean becoming naïve.

Trust still requires judgment.

Red flags still matter.

Patterns still matter.

But there is a difference between noticing evidence and inventing evidence.

Inquiry gives you room to be curious without immediately becoming defensive.

It allows conversations to replace assumptions.

It allows facts to replace stories.

And it gives other people the opportunity to explain themselves before you've already decided what they meant.

Your mind will always try to complete an incomplete picture.

You don't have to accept its first draft.

Sometimes the most mature response is simply:

"I don't know yet. Let me find out."

Replace suspicion with inquiry.

You may discover that reality is much less threatening than the story you created about it.
