Today's episode is about Mazda putting the same drive into every single detail.

When's the final moment putting in the work?

That's what defines you.

We're going to do highlights in this week's movie in Ford, there's more to a Mazda because

there's more to you.

Today's episode, we are talking, reflecting on the Purdue game.

I wasn't able to make the post game show, so I want to talk a little bit about that.

Thoughts on this team's improvement over the course of the season because I think there's

an underrated storyline there and then hats off great guard, this is where I want to start.

Is he the most underrated coach in the country?

Maybe not.

I mean, there are a lot of coaches and there's a lot of really good coaches at a lot of

levels.

That's one thing I've learned, both in my limited time coaching, but also kind of covering

this sport.

But man, it doesn't feel like he gets the credit he deserves from a lot of Badger fans,

from big 10 folks, from the national media.

You got to look back on the season, just reflect on it and say, what, what a job.

I create guard in the staff and, you know, a good buddy of the show Chips sent this out to me.

I think Reggie was on it.

This is an entirely Houtteam outside of Blackwell, Winter, Janiki with a few minutes here and

there.

This is an entirely new team and you want to beat Purdue without Nolan Winter because

he was hurt and Janiki's out.

It's Blackwell and a bunch of guys that are brand new on this roster.

It's Boyd, it's Carrington, it's Bilioluskis, it's Rap, it's Rodi, et cetera, et cetera.

He's completely reloaded the chamber.

I mean, the clip had one bullet left in it, two with Winter, but he's completely reloaded

that and this team has a Mr. Beat, 14 and six.

They're going to finish, I think, fifth in the big 10.

And if you remember Bo Ryan, and Bo Ryan was incredible, obviously.

We don't need to state the obvious, Hall of Fame coach, one of one.

And he had this incredible streak of finishing in the top four in the big 10.

I think we're going to finish five this year in the big 10.

That's where we're currently.

But finishing fifth in this big 10 is different than finishing fifth in Bo Ryan's big 10.

And it's not to take anything away from obviously what Bo Ryan did, but

this is a tougher big 10.

It's got 18 deans.

You've added several squads.

You see always a basketball school.

Maryland, although they've been down, that's a basketball school.

Oregon spends money.

And Washington has had talent.

But it's also a resurgent Michigan.

Nebraska's really good.

Illinois's great, Purdue's Purdue.

This is a tremendous basketball conference.

And the badger's finished 14 and six.

Tip the hat.

You know, great job.

You just, we just got to take a second.

And we still do post game shows after a loss.

And people in the chair like, I don't know about great guard.

I'm like, okay, great guard has tied Bo Ryan's program record for wins over top 10 teams.

He's got 18 of them.

He's been incredible.

And yeah, it's been some ups and downs.

But I don't know how you look back at this year, 22 and 9 overall, 14 and six in conference.

He's going to have another all conference type player in Nick Boyd,

who has once again, like many players in over the last several years under this coaching

staff and under great guard has nailed career highs in points and productivity.

You know, he's Tonjay at store.

It's the development of Blackwell and Winter.

It's Nick Boyd.

It's Carrington.

All these guys have played ball, you know, ball somewhere else.

All these transfer players, none of them have played as well.

They've played Madison.

What's the common denominator there?

It's great guard.

It's great guard.

And absolutely credit to the staff to Kirk Penny and to Krabbenhoff and, you know,

Brad Davidson coming over, but great guard hired the staff and credit to the players,

but they're great guards players.

Yeah, he's been absolutely incredible.

This is going to be one of the tougher big 10s we've seen recently.

Michigan is a great team.

Illinois and Nebraska and, you know, Michigan state are also all really good teams produce

really good.

And the bachelor's beat all of them, right?

Like they beat they get the best when the best quartet of wins in the country,

probably bar none and three of them are in the road.

And that comes back to coaching.

You have to give great guard just a ton of credit.

And I think a part of guard coach guard that doesn't get enough credit and isn't talked

about enough is how seamlessly he went away from something he'd done his entire coaching

career, basically.

He had learned under Bo Ryan and he ran Bo Ryan's kind of scheme and his system and his style.

And for several years, and breaking from that mold, from a hall of fame coach,

from a legend, from the guy who brought Wisconsin to the national championship game.

And you're his hand pick successor.

Do you guys realize how hard it is to completely break with some of

Bo Ryan's dead fast principles?

We see the badges occasionally shipped into his own now.

We see the team play fast.

We see them hunt shots.

We don't see them running the swing.

We don't see them hitting the post.

We don't see them doing the same thing defensively against big enroll schemes.

We see him doing all sorts of things differently.

We see him with more patience for turnovers,

allowing players to play through things.

Imagine you had a mentor in whatever industry you're in who was an all-time great.

And he hand picked you to take over.

You know, and it didn't happen right away, but several years down the road,

you completely flip everything that that mentor did, not everything.

Because they're still practicing fundamentals.

This is still a fundamental coaching staff.

But the way you play offense, the way you control the tempo,

you completely flip it, and it works.

That doesn't mean what Bo Ryan was doing was wrong.

Obviously, because of all of him coach.

But that takes some chutzpah.

That takes some, that takes some intestinal fortitude to say,

you know, I've done this thing from a coaching perspective for a long time,

a certain way.

And I've learned from one of the goats.

And I'm going to do it differently.

I'm going to change it.

And it's flourished.

You got to get Gregard so much credit for that.

And sure, Kirk Penny played a huge role in that.

Absolutely coming up,

influencing Coach Gard and his system.

But Gregard hired Kirk Penny.

And Gregard had the confidence to listen to him.

And the ego list, the selfless nature to listen to him.

Because that's another part of it.

Coach is often don't want to change because they think they're right.

They think their way is the correct way.

They'll be able to change midstream to alter the course to shift the rudder.

That's super impressive.

And you just got to give Gregard so much credit for what he's done this year.

What this team has done this year.

They've been phenomenal.

They've been phenomenal.

And it's, it's a bunch of things.

If you want to break it down,

if you want to really break it down.

And why it's been such an impressive year for Gregard,

it's, it's talent identification.

It's taking guys like Brighton Carrington,

understanding that your scheme will fit them better.

And you can get more out of them.

It's getting Nick Boyd here and getting him to play effectively with another ball dominant,

you know, guard ISO guard and John Blackwell.

It's the continued development of Nolan Winter.

It's the identification of Austin rap and Billy Oscars.

Tremendous.

Just tremendous job.

Does he bat a thousand?

No, but nobody does.

Nobody bats a thousand.

You know, Phil Jackson flamed out with the nicks.

Nobody bats a thousand.

But he's, he's really good guys.

And he's phenomenal at talent identification,

which is maybe the most important part of coaching in the portal era.

Listen, this

cam hunter, Daniel free tag.

We're both on this Badgers roster last year.

They're both the leading scores on their teams this year.

Central Arkansas for Cameron Hunter and Buffalo for Daniel free tag.

Those are both talent identification wins for Gregard.

You didn't keep him on the roster for various reasons.

And I think you'd love to have him now.

Probably, but those are two more guys that he looked at.

He identified and his staff said, yeah,

those, those players will work here from a talent perspective.

And they're both flourishing this year.

You just got to give him a ton of credit, man.

We're going to come back, take a break, come back and talk about

the other part of this team that I'm not sure if it gets talked about enough.

And something else, Gregard does really well.

We're going to talk about that next on Lockdown Badgers.

Okay, let's talk about this other aspect of great guard in this team

that I think is really impressive.

They just keep getting better, right?

A lot of teams don't.

Look at what Indiana has done in the back after this season.

Nebraska's starting to struggle a little bit.

Purdue, Purdue, look at where they're at from where they were two months ago.

And then you look at this Wisconsin team.

And let's go back to the beginning of this year.

Let's go back, excuse me, let's go back to the beginning of this season.

Getting murdered by BYU.

I mean, what they lost by about 30, I think it was 28.

Nebraska bus, bus autumn, Purdue won by 20 something.

You lost to a TCU team, a Villanova team

that I think you were both better than.

And now you went from losing by 20 something to Purdue

to beating him at home on senior day.

What what what you went from getting buzz sawed by Nebraska

to beating Michigan on the road to beating Purdue on the road

to beating Michigan State and Illinois.

Really what?

And it's a staple of I think some great guard teams.

And Gregard mentioned this, I thought this was a really good quote.

He said, everybody talks about who wins the portal,

national championship NIL and all of that stuff.

Nobody talks about any more a team improving during the season end quote.

I think that's perfect because improvements through the through the season is coaching,

right? It's understanding how to build culture,

how to state the course.

I think that's one of the best things.

And it's something less than that.

We'll frustrate people at times with Gregard.

I'm not immune to that.

It's certainly frustrated me occasionally.

But he he will stay the course if he believes in something,

whether that's Jack Chanicki, whether that was Carter Gilmore,

whether that was the rotation in the front court,

he's not going to be a victim of the moment.

He's going to believe in what he's seen in practice,

believe in over the course of time,

the right decisions will in the aggregate will

will make the most sense and will come out ahead

because we're not going to make knee jerk decisions

to rotations or playing times.

We believe in what we believe.

And we're going to stick to those guns.

You know, after the...

What was the recent loss where we shot 45-3s?

Was that the Oregon game?

I think it was the Oregon game where we didn't play well.

We shot 45-3s.

And there were a lot of badger fans that said too many threes.

Nah, hit the paint.

After the end of the blah, you know, sound bite.

But Gregard said, no, that's who we are.

We're going to believe in what we believe.

And I didn't dislike most of the shots and we just didn't shoot well.

Now, I'm paraphrasing there.

And I think there were things in that game

I'm sure he wasn't as happy about, you know,

with defensively.

But I like that he is iconoclastic in what he believes.

And I think you need that in head coach.

You need a head coach who's a stabilizing force

because the players are young, right?

There's a lot going on.

They're going to be victims of it in up and down season,

whereas the coach needs to set that that rudder,

the stabilizing force.

And you look at this team, where they have...

Where have they improved?

My goodness, look at Nick Boyd from early in the year to now.

Nick Boyd is the best point guard in the big 10 right now, right?

I mean, is he not?

He's now beaten right in Smith.

He all played him fears.

He all played fears when they played Michigan State.

He all played Wogler when they played Illinois.

Who's better right now?

Not over the course of the season, not for the NBA.

I don't care about the NBA.

We're talking college hoops.

This is not locked on NBA draft prospects.

This is locked on badgers.

We're talking big 10 basketball.

Who's better right now than Nick Boyd at the point guard spot?

You're not going to name one.

You're not.

He's in a tier with some other really good point guards,

but you're not going to name one that's better right now.

Absolutely not.

But that's been an ascension over the season for Nick Boyd,

which again goes back to great guard.

It goes back to the steadying hand,

and the influence that great guard has.

Look at the internal improvement over the course of the year

from guys like Nolan Winter.

Look at the improvement over the course of year from Austin Rap,

from Billy Luskis,

from Braden Carrington, my goodness.

Carrington from the beginning of the year to now.

All these players do our own prove,

and maybe Rodi hasn't as much as you like to see,

but over the course of the season,

this version of the Badgers basketball team right now

would beat the Breaksoft the Badgers team

from three months ago.

It would beat the Breaksoft one.

And it's because a lot of of what great guard does.

It's because of the staff he puts together.

It's because of the scheme he runs.

It's because of his ability to build culture.

It's because of the type of kids that he recruits to his team.

And one thing, this will all stand out to me

when I had Patrick Curve on the show.

And it's always great when we can have Patrick Curve

on the show, he's phenomenal.

But he said something that I think he heard it from one of the Badgers.

Football coaches, I'd have to go back and look.

But he said, you recruit your own mistakes.

That's kind of something they've talked about

inside the walls that Wisconsin,

in the coaching rooms or whatever.

You recruit your own mistakes.

It's phenomenal.

I think that's phenomenal.

And you look at great guard.

He doesn't recruit mistakes.

He doesn't hit on everybody.

But the players that are here

buy into the culture seemingly.

They buy into the motion W.

They, it really matters to them.

You can see them on the bench getting excited

and celebrating.

You know, again, he doesn't bat 1,000

because nobody in the world,

that's 1,000 in talent acquisition.

And that's true in any sport,

any coach that's true from Bill Belichet

to Bill Parsel's to George C for to Bill Walsh to

anybody.

Tommy Lassort, I like nobody bats 1,000, right?

But gosh darn it, he bats pretty well

when it comes to identifying the right fits,

the right people,

not just from a talent standpoint,

from a cultural standpoint.

You go back to last year,

John Tonja, he fit like a glove.

And there's people who would call

John Tonja one of their favorite

Badger basketball players,

who's here for a year.

And I feel like Nick Boyd is in that same vein

who people just love Nick Boyd.

He's here for a year.

And in the transfer portal era,

players that come in for a year tend to be

often called mercenaries.

But Gray Guard has found a bit of a way

to bring guys in that really buy-in

for the time they're here.

I don't think that's common.

I don't think most coaches have figured out that.

And I think that is the enduring legacy

of what he got from Bo Ryan.

Understanding the importance of culture,

understanding the importance of building a team,

understanding the importance of

standing on what you believe in

and not changing in the middle of the season.

If maybe it doesn't go right

for the first five games or six games

or being able to stay the course,

be consistent, be steady, be who you are.

And in Gray Guard is crushing it at all those things.

He's been absolutely tremendous.

And Badger fans should be, I'll just say it,

to be thankful to have him.

And I know people will say,

well, he's got to do more in March.

I agree.

Absolutely.

They say that about a lot of people

until they win the big one.

You know, they said that about

Bo Ryan for a while until he got to the final four.

You know, I get it.

I'm there with everybody.

You've got to make a sweet 16 run.

You've got to get into the elite eight.

But those things don't happen

unless you stack good regular seasons.

You stack good regular seasons

to give yourself enough chops at the wood.

And eventually you keep chopping at that wood in its blitz.

So I think the improvement over the year,

incredibly impressive.

And I'm just really stoked to be a fan of this program right now.

It's a fun team.

Okay, let's talk about the Purdue game.

So you go into this game without no one winter

and you're going into a road game

against the Purdue team

that is celebrating senior night

for a bunch of legends on that team.

Fletcher lawyer and Braden Smith.

And you just you just work them offensively.

And that is we talked about it a couple times.

The high water market what this offense can look like.

The Badras have built a scheme here

where when those fours and it's really the four,

here's the thing it's really the fours

that are the key to this team.

Because I think I think we know what we're going to get

from Dick Boyd.

I'm pretty sure what I'm going to get from John Blackwell.

I know what I'm going to get from Nolan

which are when he's healthy.

And I think I know what I'm going to get from Andrew Rodi,

which isn't quite as much as I thought I would,

but it's not bad.

You get a solid ball mover who can hit open threes

and can do a lot of little things.

And then I think we know we're going to get

from Braden Carrington.

It comes down to, in my opinion,

when the fours on this team,

when when Bieluskis and Austin Rapper playing well

and they're hitting shots,

this team is murderous to deal with defensively.

This team is a steam roller offensively

when those fours are hitting shots.

Because when those fours are hitting shots,

what happens is everything is space.

There's no longer any spot on the floor

where a defender can feel safe.

Everybody's in conflict.

Every single defender is,

I've used this analogy before.

Offensively, you want to stretch the defense

like a rubber band.

You want to create tension everywhere.

And eventually it breaks.

When a defense can say in spots,

when they can help off of players,

when certain players aren't,

you know, they aren't dangerous at any spot in the court,

it allows you to help.

It allows you to send coverage in different ways.

It allows you to say,

he gets you in the paint.

But when those fours are shooting shots,

what the heck do you do defensively?

Because you can't keep boyd out of the paint.

Not not really.

So he's going to get in the paint.

If you're going to help at this point,

void is so locked in,

that he's finding that open shooter.

And now you're just praying people on hit shots.

And that's a terrible place to be defensively.

It's a terrible place to be

when you are stuck in just praying people don't hit shots.

Because the patches are just engineering

open looks right now.

And they're engineering open looks

for a bunch of dudes who can shoot.

That's a disaster if you're trying to guard it.

The only way you're really

shutting down this patch is offense right now

is again, if those fours aren't hitting shots,

okay, which does happen occasionally.

Both those guys can go into a slump

or you just have a tremendous defensive back court

who can really keep boyd in black while the paint.

But not many people can.

Not many people have that.

There's not many defenders in the country

that can play defense at that level

and also play enough minutes to make a difference.

Because there are some dogs on defense,

but they can't play offense.

So you can't play them a bunch.

Maybe you have a great defender,

but there's not many guys that are

pluses on offense that can also hang

with boyd in black while defensively.

So it gives the badge as a tremendous advantage

when those fours are hitting shots.

And then you bring Nolan and Winter back into this.

You're really liking how this rotation is playing.

Going to March.

He's the key though.

You did see Purdue take advantage on the glass

a little bit.

You did see them score 90 plus.

Because losing Winter hurts you defensively.

It hurts you on the defensive glass.

That is that big spot where if they can get him back,

they go from bad to just okay in those areas.

Defensive rebounding,

defense and with their ability to shoot,

you saw what happens.

That was a tremendously impressive game.

And it just shows you again

what this team can do when it's hitting shots.

So I was able to be on the reaction show,

but I did come back to where we're heading to our cabin.

I watched it.

We got in like one.

So I watched it one.

I was up till three.

And I was just loving it.

It was just so much fun.

This team has heart.

They don't they don't ever stop.

That's the other thing.

When you watch that Purdue game,

Purdue starts out the game quick.

They go on a run.

They catch back up then the Badgers rally.

Then Purdue goes on another run and the Badgers rally.

That's the other thing with this team is they never stand the map.

They never stay in the canvas.

It's a boxing term, but they get knocked down sometimes.

And outside of a couple of bad games,

which they've had them.

For the most part, this team always rallies.

Going back to coaching, but also this one goes back to some of the players.

It goes back to boy.

It goes back to Blackwell and Winter and Carrington and Rodi.

They just got some dogs that don't stop playing.

I love this team.

I really enjoy it.

I think it's a ton of fun.

There's obvious flaws that they have.

And I still think the deep men is probably going to keep them

making a deep run.

But it's a tremendously fun team to watch, man.

And what a year by boy.

What a year by Blackwell.

What a year by Winter.

What a year by Carrington.

A ton of great members this season.

They finished up by being Purdue on their senior night.

Just phenomenal stuff.

Again, hats off the great guard.

Tremendous coach.

Tremendous team.

Hats off the Nick Boyd.

Hats off to those fours.

For just banging shots.

Making it really hard to play defense against this Wisconsin team.
