I know you were at the practice recently.

You've been texting me.

We've been trying to figure out logistics for this.

It's Game Week.

I want to start here.

I know people have written Wisconsin off in this.

Like, somebody on a national podcast the other day said, Wisconsin is just in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

Get ready for the train to come through.

How do you see this game playing out?

Yeah.

Well, you know, I.

I've always been optimistic guy.

And I've been a little bit more measured going into this season obviously.

The last few years, we've struggled tremendously.

But I look at this team and I look at this Notre Dame game and I think to myself.

I don't see this being a blowout.

And the reason I don't see it being a blowout is because I see two teams that have good defenses.

Notre Dame's defense might be national championship level.

Our defense certainly is going to be improved from last season.

And, you know, two offenses where while Notre Dame brings back CJ Carr, who's a tremendous quarterback.

And they have definitely NFL talent on the offense.

Flying and probably one or two tight ends that are really, really good.

I don't know if I see the same level of explosive potential that maybe they've had in the past few seasons.

Primarily because they lose two of their biggest weapons that they've had for three or four years in their running backs.

And so what that kind of looks like to me is a defensive slug fest that sets up well for a team like Wisconsin, who's greedy, who, you know, is motivated, who wants to show that, you know, hey, look,

we're not pushovers anymore.

We're getting back to the way we used to be.

And so, you know, I like sort of the dynamic going into the game, especially because if you look at the beginning of the season for Notre Dame ever since Marcus streaming got hired.

Hasn't always been a highlight real success.

Yeah, no, that's very fair.

And something we've talked about it's week one Notre Dame has had, has had some struggles early on.

And I think defenses are ahead of offenses early.

And to your point, I think there's two defenses that are here.

And you want to practice you highlighted the cornerbacks, right?

I think, and you said, I'm going to kick it over to you.

You told me I'm crazy.

I think Wisconsin might be able to play a little more man on the edges, bringing another guy into the box and just muck it up a little bit for this Notre Dame offense.

Right. And I think that's exactly what the game plan has to be.

You know, you see our two linebackers of the middle.

Those guys are going to, they're going to bring everything they got.

And you saw that at practice.

You could see that, you know, through the clips that are shared through social media things like that.

It's clearly evident that they're the heart and soul of this defense.

And I, you know, I think Mason Posta is going to rise up to the competition.

And I think that's going to help the rest of the front seven around him rise up as well.

But the thing that actually stood out to me in practice to your point, you know, one of the comments that, you know, we've been talking about over the last few months is that.

Well, you know, are, do we have our top one receiver? Do we have receivers that can get open over defense?

Do we have guys that can really separate and create separation?

I think part of that is just the fact that this is probably the best cornerback room I've seen at Wisconsin.

At least from athletic potential, probably ever.

And that's not me being hyperbolic.

These guys close gaps fast.

They could close windows fast. They're all big. They're all lengthy.

They all have speed.

They stayed with their man pretty consistently. They could correctly diagnose offensive plays.

And I don't think that that's just saying, well, our offense is easy to diagnose. I think it's just because smart athletic players.

And, and that's one of the things that actually encourages me for this matchup.

Noter-Dame is not known for having NFL talent at Y receivers. They have good players by all means.

I'm not saying that they're, you know, such as by means we have to play our a game, but they're not like an Ohio state.

You know, they're not a USC. They're not going to send a guy out there that we just can't cover.

And so that's why I feel pretty good about this game, not to mention the fact that they're going to want to run the ball too.

They're, you know, they're built to run the ball. That's Notre Dame's bread and butter.

And so while CJ Carr again, a really good quarterback and someone that definitely will pick us apart.

If we give him the opportunity to do so, I don't know if he can win the game by himself.

And that's what gives me a lot of hope for this matchup from a defensive perspective.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. I think the badges defense is going to play well.

I think they're going to keep them in the game. I'm going to flip it around on you because the question marks to me are on offense.

Joseph offense line injuries may be receiver depth.

Is the offense going to be a score if they have to score 17 points to win this game.

Can they do that? If they have scored 21 to win this game, can they do that?

I think that lies entirely on the offensive line.

If I'm being totally honest, I think if we have our healthy offensive line, maybe if we just have one of the guys back, which is probably more likely to be, hey, wood.

I think we're going to be able to move the ball. I mean, look, this is not the first time we've ever played an NFL defense event.

I mean, we've played Michigan. We've played with, you know, a house state. We've played Penn State. We've played Oregon.

We've played NFL defense events every single season. Right. So this is not new.

I think one of the things that we have to do is play our game.

And the X factor that we do have is Colton Joseph.

She's fast. This is not this isn't like, oh, Russell Wilson can kind of break contain and scramble a little bit.

He's a running back playing quarterback. And I say that not necessarily. Well, he's a bad passer. I say that because that's a legitimate.

He's a running back that can throw the ball. Like, and that's where I feel we're going to have a little bit of edge there in the sense of now we can create matchup problems.

Now we can get the defense out of place. He can escape the pocket. He can extend plays.

And that's where you see guys break open. That's where you see our receivers, you know, maybe find a soft spot in the zone or are able to just do one little juke move extra to get off of a cover corner and just present enough of a target such that, you know,

we can complete a pass. The one thing I think with Colton Joseph that I think a lot of maybe practices haven't taken into account yet is he's not a quarterback that you expect to just drop back in the pocket and sling it around.

He's a guy that when the play breaks down, he makes things happen. He's a gamer quarterback. He's a lot more like Mordecai in that way.

And so I think, you know, a messy game or things are going kind of all over the place and you got to rely on the stakes of the other team.

I think he gives you a little bit of an edge just enough that can potentially allow this offense to be more successful than they would be, you know, had we not had that.

Yeah, he's an X factor. Let's just call it like it is. He gives you something that is hard to game plan against because he can make something out of nothing, which a bad record back has not been able to do consistently in a long time for Wisconsin.

Mordecai couldn't flash his, but I can call Joseph third and seven. He's a guy that you got to account for. He can make things happen.

And I'm really excited to see how it plays out. I want to ask you maybe a bit of a tough question.

Is this coaching staff ready for this? And I frame it in that way because I do think there have been moments where this team hasn't been quite ready to play.

There have been moments where this team has as folded. I don't know how to say it in some of these games.

I think there's been moments where Luke Fickle hasn't been as aggressive as he needed to be. And when I watch Ryan Day, when I watch some damn landing, onside kick to start a game.

I'm not saying you got to go there and onside kick and start the game, but he's advised to not do that.

Yeah, I agree.

But he's also got to be selectively aggressive. And I don't know if we've consistently seen that from Luke fickle.

Yeah. And you know, I think I think that's a fair point, especially at Wisconsin. I would argue that when he was at Cincinnati, he was going to dead.

There was moments where he had lapses like any other coach that you see, but I think he has the capability to do that.

I don't think we've seen it necessarily come together. The exception being sort of the tail end of last year. I mean, you saw guys came out ready to play.

Now our offense couldn't perform, but quite frankly, I mean, you're on your third and fourth offensive lineman and your fourth string quarterback and your fist string running back.

So I don't know what you expected from an offensive perspective, but the fact we beat two ranked teams to end the season and the way we played in those games.

And even coming out a little bit against Minnesota, I think we just kind of got into a situation where we the offensive was finally just completely caught up to us.

You saw a different level of competitive spirit. And if that carries over into this game, that I'm not worried about coming out flat because I don't think that the team allow themselves to come out flat.

One of the big things you hear coming out of camp and practice is that this is a player driven team. And you know, that's not hyperbole.

When you have guys like a Mason posa, it reminds me of a guy like a Nick Herbig. Nick Herbig was not about to let that defense get scored on. Right. It didn't matter what was going on.

It doesn't matter what he was playing or what his role was. He was not going to let another team put up 50 points on that defense of 21 Mason strikes me as the same type of guy.

Right. And so I think at the end of the day, our defense is going to be there, whether or not our offense is able to execute again, we're playing an incredibly talented defense.

It's going to be a struggle. But the one thing that the advantage that Wisconsin has always had, and I know we're trying to get back to that is, even when we played those good teams, we could still push the line a little bit.

It just came, it just broke down when we had nothing else that we could do and teams could just key in on that. I think with the offense that grabs us trying to run a lot more misdirection, a lot more offense or option style plays, a lot more reads.

And quite frankly, overall, I mean, just having a slightly higher level of just athletic potential, you talk to Brian Smith about that, you know, he would you would tell you exactly that.

I think that gives us just a little bit more opportunities to strike against, you know, a defense like Notre Dame, who might make a mistake is playing their first game to maybe things there, you know, maybe thinks they're the top dogs and maybe, you know, might overlook a little bit. So we'll see.

We'll see how it all plays out. Obviously at the end of the day, you got to strap on the pads and everybody straps on the page the same way. So, you know, we'll see how it goes.

Yeah, I think that's really well said. I love that big picture. You know, I've talked about this a little bit. We both kind of think it was constant defense is going to show up play hard. The game is going to be relatively close for a while.

And maybe Notre Dame pulls away or maybe Wisconsin's able to stay within a puncher's reach, right. But what if that's not a case, what if you've had this off season of optimism.

And I think that your fans have a reason to be optimistic with what's happened this off season and some of the moves and some of the roster upgrades and some of the coaching moves and we're going to get into Sean I course.

But what if you then come out Lambo field prime time and you lose 41 to 10, right. It doesn't look competitive.

What's the big picture takeaway from week one in a non conference game, but it's also not a nothing game. What's the big picture takeaway.

Yeah, I mean, I think if we come out completely flat and lose 41 to 10, then there's a lot of red flags and most of it at that point to me, there's not there's not really any other excuses to look at the coaching staff.

That would be where you know, step back and say, look, we got money now. We have the players that we intended to recruit now. We have the offensive scheme set up in the way that we wanted to. We have the running quarterbacks. We have, you know, the potential talent, high talent, high school players that, you know, we're not used to seeing here.

We brought back a lot of guys that were key to our success last season.

If we lay an egg, then that I put that on at that point, there's really only one place to look in as the coaching staff because at the end of the day, it's like if you can't take advantage of everything that at least seemingly looks like it's setting up for us to have a good season.

Well, what's the what's the common denominator there, right, it's the coaching staff. And so that would be my concern if we get blown out. It's not the end of the year.

Notre Dame could go on and sweep its way to a national championship for all I know they're one of the teams that are, you know, definitely getting votes to be capable of doing that. So, at the end of the day, I wouldn't necessarily say it's the end of the world, but I would have some questions about, you know, what does it mean for our team to be prepared? What does that look like to our coaching staff's eyes in comparison to maybe what it's like in the past.

Yeah, I think it's well said when is that a quick second year we're going to come back talk, kind of take a step back talk big picture Badgers program. What does it need to look like this year? Is there a win total loop pickle has to hit.

Now let's come back into this like in good friend of the show honestly just good friend in general like I've been able to hang with Curtis in person a couple different times just another really good dude in this community from a great family.

Badger ties big picture man we talked about this a lot is there a number look thick glass to hit.

I mean is it arranged what what does it look like this year at the end of the season right I think it's a that's a tough question because I don't think it's a number I don't think it's someone sitting there basically telling them at the beginning of the year hey if you don't win seven games you're out of here I don't think that that's what the math is I think the math genuinely is almost a vibe of feel right if we go seven and five and we lose four games and overtime and maybe lose another day like that's different than going seven five getting blown out in five games right that's different going 75 and not putting up a point against Iowa loses.

I'm not going to get a point against Iowa losing by 40 right those are those are different things decidedly different and if it's very clear that the only reason that we maybe didn't hit a higher win total is because bounce the ball went the wrong way maybe an opportunity pick at just like the wrong moment things that have played Wisconsin in the past like I mean think about all the times we've lost to a north western just on who knows why that happens you know I mean like things like that like if if we're losing games because of in game things you know it's clear that this team is significantly better that we're able to.

We're able to move the ball that are often to say but execute that our defense is really good and we just get unlucky that I wouldn't say that a seven and five by any means as a market against the coaching staff because it demonstrates hey look we finally put the investment in we're finally seen some returns I personally think it's going to take a year or so for this to actually play out the way we wanted to Brian Smith said it correctly the other week when he said this is basically like year one for this staff if I'm looking at what this staff wants to do and I'm looking at the alignment from top to bottom in the athletic department this is kind of like a lot of things like that.

I think year one year one and a half because this is the first or really even second year where they're actually doing what they should be doing right and so that's kind of why I think at the end of the day it's not really like this a firm number it really just depends on how everything breaks down and how it looks over the course of the season.

I think that makes a ton of sense you know I understand all and then I just think about like this and this is what I want to also step back and say this and just I have to remind everybody this I don't know how many times we're my people we were on our fourth string quarterback our fifth string running back and had like three injured alignment all last year.

These are not things that you just like oh well a coach should just coach their way out of that that's not how this works and I don't know how many times I think people need to understand that because it's like.

Imagine any team you've ever watched in the history of anything any football team any high school team any college team ever now give them that starting lineup for your offense tell me who's going to have a successful season.

Ever you're a deal there you know and so that's my whole point like at the end of the day it's like if things like that happen again I would have a lot of questions about a strength of conditioning but at the end of the day it's like.

You can't you can't out coach that you just can't and and so that's where for me it's like look.

I think this is the opportunity to showcase is this team what we want it to be and we'll know this season we'll know if hey if everything goes according to plan we'll know how good we are we'll know how good the staff is we'll know where we're at and we'll know what moves need to be made by the end of the year that's why I don't really put a win total on it.

Listen I think that's incredibly fair and I would say two things to that and I'm curious you're taking both of them I think you have to give this coach that actually a lot of credit for not losing the team we've seen teams fold down the stretch when the seasons lost and this team stayed in it.

Be Washington beat Illinois played Indiana tough played Oregon tough but here's here's my counter to kind of all of this and I say that.

I say that really kind of a green with a lot of what you're saying i've said the same thing right like you have to take the context of the season and what happened and who you're playing into into play.

However, down the stretches team played a lot better with those same injuries right so I just have a hard time saying it was just the injuries.

Causing the inconsistency early on when later on you have those same injuries and you played much better like there you think it's a little more than just the injuries right and it feels like it maybe took them a little too long whether it's inserting.

Cooper and Posa and we've seen some of those maybe potential issues last several years where maybe younger players needed to play earlier like if that was a linchpin then they should have played earlier right I mean you can see where i'm coming from with this right yeah and i'll say this just kind of with some.

You know perspective on this having grown football family and things like that it's not easy to take a true freshman who didn't come in for spring camp and say you know what he's our best linebacker let's put him in game one.

That that i mean at the end of the day that i get the hindsight 20 out he's our best player we should have put him in it's like dude he didn't show up to spring camp he had 15 practices true freshman you probably know names a little place yet right it's like you can't put him in against Alabama.

It doesn't work that way you know he got his way on the field because he's that good you know no coaching staff in history of our program would have done that and that's the thing again you look at the berries and the christian bill must sure they grew up it was a different time obviously much different type of athletic scene they weren't starting freshman.

They weren't doing that rondaine and start to laugh right these are things that like at the end of the day.

Those decisions make sense now they that you can also equally say well they decided you know what these guys are going to give us an opportunity to win they put him in and we lost christian allegro because of that who's probably going to be a starter at Ohio state so they were willing to lose a starter.

To Ohio state to put in Mason posa that's not an easy decision when your jobs on the line either right and not to mention to your point we did play better when those guys came in.

Which makes me feel like there's a higher probability that you know we're going to carry that into this season that's not guarantee there's no by any means this is a different team than it was last year.

But look at the offensive output in the last few games this season we still average like 11 points a game the difference was the grit was just way higher we we found a way of willing ourselves to somehow winning games that make no sense to me we had a lead our leading passer was a freaking punter.

You know i'm saying and and we won games with that so that's not effective i'm saying that's you can't you're not going to have a successful season if that happens every single game but again the grit and the termination that the team showed down the stretch which again is categorically different than anything i've seen and not quite frankly the last five or so years.

That gives me hope that you know going into a game like this when we are healthy when we do have the guys we want in there.

What else can we do.

No i love that take because i do think at times people are evaluating this team over the course of an entire season and really if you just look at the back half and look at the team that hung with with no offense everybody hurt.

Hung with organ for for a half and hung with Indiana for a half and we gave Indiana one of the hardest games they had all season probably top four i mean they they've team rolled everybody so i mean that's the thing.

Now again but i my only pushback on that again it's not even pushback because i think what you're saying is is very well said.

It feels it felt like it took too long to flip that switch over though and i hear you you you don't play poster right away but.

I think if you go back to the year before i thought a legra should have been playing earlier right and i think this is.

Then a bit of a trend over a couple years where it just feels like these moves are taking a little too long even getting a two glass here he comes on a he looks like the best running back on the team.

But he played the organ i just it kind of ties into that first question i had where.

At times maybe and it hinds its 2020 and what do i know but at times maybe got to be a little quicker to make some moves that that.

Maybe should be apparent i don't know.

yeah and you know what and and into you know talk to you here to i that's not also incorrect and that has been the trend over the last few years i know i just said everything i just said.

My my thought there is that if it's obvious to us then it should be obvious to the coaching staff and that's the hope you know that's that's really what you have to bet on can this coaching staff look at that and be like yeah we we messed up we're in a tough spot every single one of us on the hot seat now we're not coaching because we're trying to make style points or keep players happy we're coaching because.

If we're not coaching like this we don't have a job and it's going to be not a ceremonial exit in other words we're not going to go any place better than we are right now so.

You know they're incentive is to win and that's it right and so the hope is because that's a double it's or they don't do anything too drastic but at the same time they're not willing to sit back on someone and say well i don't know it's like what this is this or nothing so and i think the reason that i have a little bit more again.

I would say optimism there is just because one they did it last year and then to you know you see.

fickle when you're talking about recruiting strategy moving forward to get like we're we're we're we're transferring and they were recruiting players that we think can play now.

And if we don't think you can play now we're just we're not going to recruit that because at the end of the day the way colleges now like if you can't give someone.

A realistic path to the field or give them an opportunity you know then then there's chance how they could they could transfer and and so.

bringing in 30 40 guys that develop over time might not be the most economical model going into the future of the big 10 and you know college football in general.

Yeah I love what you said and that I want to finish this statement on this i agree with you in terms of writing the momentum from what they did at the end of last year into the season gives me a ton of of optimism not just not just for Notre Dame which we were talking about.

But to carry into the season i love what we saw at the end of last year and I think that does carry over and that is a credit to the staff alright we're going to take one more quick second.

What's the vibes with the new athletic director Sean I course.

Yeah vibes are good you know so I think I'm pretty sure this is probably known by now but he was under staff of Barry for a long time before he ended up actually getting the job at Nebraska in fact Barry probably help set that up with his Nebraska ties but.

You know when back when he was working for Wisconsin back then he was one of the guys who would do a lot of touch points with donors and so he had a lot of relationships actually already coming back into Wisconsin.

And his experience at Texas was tremendous for him essentially his role there was again working under the main ad but he did a lot more the logistics in the business side of things whereas the.

The brats are at Texas is a lot more of the you know public facing going to all the events going all the meetings you're going to all the practice on that kind of stuff a lot more of a politically forward position as opposed to you know doing a lot of the hard work so he knows what a successful.

Infrastructure looks like and if you think about his time at Texas that was honestly some of the more successful years in a row they had they haven't necessarily won a football title in a while but.

And one lot of titles and a lot of other things and who's the been the thoreen the side for Wisconsin volleyball for the last few years so you know so that so he knows what it takes to win at a high level in a tough conference but I would say that the vibes overall have been really good he's been at a couple of events I had fortune of going to one in Chicago and actually as an aside the women's basketball coach was there as well she's phenomenal i'm really.

I'm really happy with her guard guard loved guard loves her you know like I think she's going to do tremendous things at Wisconsin we got to make Donald's all American.

That's one of those programs are I've always scratched my head as to why can't Wisconsin be good at what is basketball anyway.

You know so he was at this event you know shaking hands with everybody meeting everybody remember names you know talking to people he knew in the past he was really excited got up gave a speech you know was was was motivated was was passionate about working with the team talked about some of the initiatives that you know things that they talk about.

Texas and what they want to do moving forward at Wisconsin and what we can do what we have yet still do accomplish so I think it's in good hands you know I think his reception has been really strong I think he I think he has great relationships with the with the donors and they seem to like him as well so I overall I think the vibes are good with him.

I don't want to some of his different is is just good right I don't want to put someone like obviously we all know he's replacing Chris McAdosh this isn't a spot where I'm going to try to like dog Mac or anything like that but it does feel.

I've been to a couple different sporting events as well and he's there it feels like he's present in a way that maybe across all the different sporting aspects of Wisconsin athletics and maybe just Chris McAdosh wasn't quite as present is that a fair statement.

Yeah and that's been honestly the critique you know of McAdosh for quite some time both internal and external to the program is just he wasn't always available it's not really his personality either he wasn't the guy that would you know get up in being the front or go show up to a lot of things he's he's a lot more analytical you know he was very intelligent you know but he was a lot more.

And so I think with I course you see a little bit more of that forward facing person and I think that's going to go a long way in terms of bringing a lot of people back into the program I mean just think about all the alumni that are now starting to come back and filter back through the football team you start to see him be more involved with events and so I think that that goes a long way and it also goes a long way in the sense of communication you know what what's going on with the program one of the things I think was lacking the last for years which is there wasn't always that communication layer between what the you know athletic department.

And I think it's almost thinking and what we were seeing on the field and I think you're going to see a little bit more openness in that regard.

Again obviously everything is still yet to be seen but I do feel that you know you're going to see a little bit more of that move forward.

The great Caroline from the discord who is an awesome person said my question is did they need to win a certain amount of did they need to get to a certain win number or certain exciting level to bring ticket sales back up so it's pretty widely reported take it sales were down which again you're coming up before one season that really shouldn't shock people.

Do they need to hit a certain number to get fans re engage excited or ticket sales just something that's really hard to.

I don't know unless you win 10 11 games you're not going to get a big joke.

Yeah you know and that's tough I because honestly I mean I would argue that if we look probably nationally trends are probably down just across the board because I honestly just attendance and things in general are just down.

And so I think you know that might play a factor in it obviously not winning doesn't help so I do think that yeah you need to see some excitement we need probably a big winner to maybe we upset you know a USC and get like a big win at home or maybe we all said we're back to you know swing in the way we were in the early 2010s and we're starting to win more games we were getting up to 10 and 2 kind of thing and I think you see the you know things go back up you really what the fans need is something to believe right they need something to see like oh I can get behind this I can believe in this right and if you know you see the vision you see.

What we're doing and we're able to maybe take down somewhere not supposed to and win the games that we're supposed to then yeah I think you see tickets sell start to go back up you know if we're exciting is and but the thing is going to be are we exciting going in the next season right that's what's going to tell you if tickets

go up because if people are like hey I'm I'm excited to see the team next year I'm excited to see these guys another year like all these guys coming back that's what will drive ticket sales you know it's not going to be did they win 10 games this year did they win four games this year it's like hey next year like this is the year that we're we're projected to do something that's where you'll see I think tickets sales go up.

Sure so my last video the video release yesterday is actually just on Plato's tail of Atlantis because Atlantis gets hyperbolized into all kinds of different things from advanced age civilizations aliens you know God's on earth all kind of crazy stuff and really the point of that video was just to say all right well let's just actually look at the

text and what does this text say right and we utilize I used the ancient Greek text from the Persis Digital Library at Tufts University which is the gold standard to anchor that assessment so just basically telling that story and explaining it to you know people so if you're ever curious as to hey you know where's the tale of Atlantis come from what is it I watched a Disney movie 15 years ago like I don't really know much about it.

I tried to break that down in a simplest way as I can so that you know you can leave feeling like hey I know what this story is I can talk about it now.
