All the fake games are done It's time for real baseball baby. Let's do this happy opening week to you How you doing and what are your expectations for the season here? Like did you see the ABS challenges floating left and right and wish that you had those when you were pitching?
Well first off was Hatton and boys phrase. Cratsy was Hatton Man, I do not wish to ABS was in a fair Because I'll probably be challenging everything because I wanted every pitch to go my way Um But you know it for me it's gonna change a little bit of the landscape of the Benton's Ben world here You know, I think this is advantage to the hitters a little bit more than the pitchers And um, I think we're gonna start seeing some more runs come across the plate this year than we did last year So I'm gonna wait and see what happens, but I'm gonna start tinting to some of these overs a little bit more But I do like it. I think it does give the umpires some kind of check You know checks and balances for them. So We'll see how it goes the rest of the year, but so far I like it. Yeah I can confirm and I'm gonna talk this whole time without blinking so that you know what it looked like to catch Jonathan
Papalban in the ninth inning. I can confirm That he was not going to get that correct and I did blink there Pap didn't blink the entire ninth inning and he would not blink during his post game interviews He was not the guy to challenge because he was just sitting there You didn't miss a lot But you didn't blink either so no we couldn't give you the ABS challenge system Yeah, you know, I mean for me though it all boils down to you know the hitters being able to Have an opportunity to challenge I think the hitters have a better View at balls at the plate So the advantages for the hitters But um, you know at the same time, you know, you looked at yesterday's red socks game I think the advantage was to the red socks, you know in that beginning when they were able to make that big challenge So we'll see some interesting games this year for sure because of it
All right, let's let's jump right into the game here. I gear crochet had a Awesome start got out of a big Jam there in one of the innings striking out mean gene and getting the next batter out too would strike out Spring training didn't look good and I hope people understand the spring training is there for reasons so people can get work We're not worried about that. He comes out shoves does what he does best six innings eight K's over three hits Talk a little about his performance and him being the ace again for the socks Yeah phrase This man has been needed in Boston for a while now They've been missing that ace and last year he came along and and you know There's a difference between a bona fide ace and someone that's trying to be an ace. This guy's a bona fide ace I think the biggest thing that I saw yesterday from his performance was He was able to get out of some big jams Whereas before you know those big jams tend to tend to roll over on him and you know, but for me
I love seeing that. I love seeing him be able to get out of the jams And you know, he's he was throwing his cutter to get out of his jams Well, this year in this spring training, you know, he's he's tried to throw this split finger a little bit more He's starting to Kind of tweak his his split finger a little bit more instead of a true change up Now I'm not sure exactly how he's throwing it But I'll find out come open and day in Boston. I'm gonna find out how he's throwing it Because I threw my my split as a true two seam split But I think that if Garrett crochet you can add a split finger or some sort of a split to his repertoire It's gonna take him to the moon man. It he this everything he throws is hard right and I think when a hitter gets in the box They can they can put it into one gear and kind of think okay, I'm gonna see everything hard But when a hitter has to sit there and say oh wait, I have to change gears for a 10 mile an hour pitch or or difference between a 10 mile an hour
Pitched that makes it a lot harder. So I'm looking for him to dominate this year I should have taken him from my side young candidate this year for the FT bets for within the company But I didn't I took Paul skeens instead. So that's not looking too good so far But I'm really excited to watch this guy dominate this year Well, you can take Paul skeens and crochet I took Paul skeens and crochet because you had the net NL and AL so You clearly went you clearly went scoobal in the AL you're such a chop. You're you're so chop But what is that what does that pitch need to look like for for for fans to say okay this Change up splitter whichever whichever he's gonna call it What does that velocity change need to be because I completely agree? I think he throws Everything just so freaking hard and if you can just square it up You'll be able you'll be making able to make contact but he we're talking about a guy who's going from like A number one to like an ace like not that he's washed to like a number one
What is that was that splitter need to look like early in the season for him to trust it because that's the biggest thing Is pictures don't trust their new or their pitches that they're throwing a different way coming into a new season Yeah, well first of all, I think he has to start throwing it in situations that matter and gain that confidence in it, you know um, but for me There has to be eight to ten mile an hour difference and you know From from crappy to veritech to chew to any any one of my catchers I used to tell them you know Make sure that I throw my change up with some velocity that that has less than what my fastball does So because I wanted to look like my fastball, but um, you know, I think at the end of the day If he stays between that eight to ten mile an hour range difference he'll be good um But that's the key is for him to start throwing it in situations that matter and the catchers
Sometimes you're going to have to make him throw it in situations where you know the catcher may know It's the right pitch to throw there But he may not have confidence in it But let's build the confidence in it and make him throw in situations where it matters and he can gain more confidence in that pitch And I think that if he does that Shoot man by all star break he should be cooking Hey, it might be time to have a heart to heart with your phone and be like I love you, but you cost too much Yeah, I'm not paying this much anymore. This is a name. I feel like we're gonna be talking about for a long time Go over his day and what you expect to see from him this year Well, I think number one is as you look at this kid and he's not a rookie anymore He is a proven veteran and goes about his business like a veteran I think that the WBC for him was a huge step forward Facing all the great pitching that he saw in the WBC and had a phenomenal WBC at that But you know, we talk a lot in Boston about his plate discipline and and that's gonna have to continue I think he's one of the best guys in our lineup that has plate discipline and for me as a pitcher Whenever I saw a hitter that had great plate discipline I always knew that I have my work cut out for me and meaning that I had to come with my best game in order to beat him So I think that has to continue
But secondly, I mean, this is a man child. I mean this dude is ripped up. He's shred He's not nowhere all this Chapman, but he's a man child and I think that you know with with him producing more home runs this year I look to him to be close to 50 home runs this year. Yeah, I said it 50 home runs This kid can really put him out of the ballpark and especially with the short porch and fanway park and right field I think he can do it and You know, he's gonna be hitting lead off So we're gonna see a lot of lead off home runs from him this year, I think I'll take the under I'll take the under considering that Jonathan Pavlovon picked Sit on Raphael last year to be the MVP of the league So I'll take the under, but thank you for that easy under that I just got Should he be the lead off? Should he be the lead off? You know crats. That's a great point um I would rather see somebody else at lead off even even into two or three spot. I like him
But I think that's something that you know Alex Corrin these managers today Are all going towards is putting their best hitter number one, you know in the lineup and hoping that they can roll that line up over That one extra time so that the ninth inning you can get him back up You see show how Tony back first and you know like will should he be a three or four whole hitter But that's what the managers are doing this these these these times of the year and and so You know, um, I like it a little bit But I'd like to see him in a more run product producing spot in the lineup And I get it you only hit lead off once and Kyle Schwarber hit lead off and I feel like it's Everybody's trying to make it their own stick. I'm going to go to a guy that didn't even start yesterday But was in on a lot of the action fortunately didn't fall going around third base on that on that one play Marcelo Meyer Is Marcelo Meyer going to be an every day guy after
May because clearly The lefties on the mountain and you have it We're going to go ahead and start Isaiah Kiner for left and you didn't bring him in to You didn't bring him in to sit the bench against lefties will they let Meyer play every day By the end of the month of May By the end of the month of May um That's a tough one for me crats I'm going to go with yes just simply because I think that they're going to eventually Hand this kid the torch and what I mean by that is they're going to want to see what he can do every day and Isaiah Kiner for left is going to start into a role playing position and and come off the bench You know the biggest the biggest difference between him and Romney Anthony is that is Marcelo Meyer Doesn't have the plate discipline that Romney Anthony does and that's the reason why Romney Anthony is is where he is
And so for me, I think swinging at bad pitches and some plate discipline for Marcelo Meyer will be key And in order to see if he can take over that every day role because I think he has the ability to take that role over every day It's just that let's clean some few things up here like swinging at bad pitches And a little bit more plate discipline and I believe that the job is his and I believe that he can handle it I just think that this is the last part of his growth in order to become an everyday starter and an everyday big leader I got one more question from the about the lineup If we put that if we put that graphic up of their lineup projected lineup for the year Are they a little short? In your opinion are they a little short? I get it. They open they want opening day But is that lineup short for you for an entire 162 games? Well, you were just talking earlier crats about staying healthy I think it's a lineup
that Has to stay healthy in order to succeed Because what they have Behind them is not very much And as you get down towards the bottom of the line up Yeah, you're looking at Marcelo Meyer and Raphael and Raya's but to me, I'm not worried about Narvaya's You know, he's a catcher that can do it behind the plate and control the game and control the staff So I'm not necessarily worried about him hitting I need say don just finally step up and I need him to to be able to start putting the ball out of the park because I know that he can And and being able to stop getting himself in situations where every time you look up It seems like he's either O2 or one two You know, it's just it's just the young Say Don that we've seen so much and this needs to be the improvement in his game Um, but you know crats if they stay healthy
I think this lineup has some fortitude to be able to make it through the entire season Um, and really carrying themselves into the playoffs season because Not only do I expect a lot out of them this year, but I know a lot of Boston is expecting a lot And to me, it's it's world series or bus this year. I really do think that they have the pitching staff and And the lineup if they stay healthy to make it all the way to the world series and win it Hey, have you hit the age where everything feels a little bit more difficult? Do you legal Disclosures at Kraken.com slash legal slash Disclosures terms and conditions apply Wow, they get there. They can do it. There's a chance they don't even get there I mean, we'll see just because of how good the AL East is. That's how crazy the division is and how competitive it is
Right, you're gonna have a team we talked about it yesterday out of the Yankees Blue Jays Orioles and Red Sox that doesn't make the postseason I mean most likely we're most likely not getting a division winner plus three wild cards out of one division It's it's not highly likely so we'll see but yes I'm with you. I think Boston's gonna be good I got two more for you one is as we're talking about the line of in depth because injuries will happen Where we add on Christian Campbell? I didn't follow him much. I would say I know he's still trying to crack it in the minor leagues right now But do you think there's a pathway for him to eventually become an impactful big league player? You know, they signed them. I think it's 60 mil is is the overall guaranteed money and is this going to turn into a Scott Kingry situation or do we have to be very patient with a guy who kind of took a burst with some Analytics helping him in his swing and then all of a sudden he's up in the bigs life came out of fast and now he's learning All kinds of different positioning. What do you got on him? Scotty, that's a great point man. I think that you said it best I think that life in the game of baseball came at him too fast
And I think that the Red Sox kind of jumped a little bit early at this position And tried to say hey, let's lock him up Because he had such a great start to his career Um, but as we know it's it's not how you start it's how you finish and he wasn't able to finish so um For me it's it's it's one thing he came out of Georgia Tech Didn't play much in the minor leagues. They they tossed him into a big league situation right away And now you're almost get you know they almost gave him the keys to second base last year And to me he didn't really prove much so um I don't know what their plans are for him. I'm in the long-term, but I know short-term He will be in AAA and he will be playing there for a while Um, it's just you know, it's it's his maturity and his plate discipline and his ability to play every day
Is just not there yet um, so I think not only him, but another guy in my opinion that that The roads that there's no roads anymore for him to to to go now is Yoshida. I mean Yoshida is stuck I mean there's nowhere for him to go. I don't see him playing very much either And yet he's still gonna be at the big league level. So what do you do with him as well? So maybe there would be some trades come trade deadline uh this year But it's gonna be hard to get rid of those guys now that you know, they're not producing Right Yeah, and they're making good cash. You're gonna have to eat money if you're trading away Someone like Yoshida and a team wants to take him All right my last one for you is an interesting you know player slash media dynamic question So this comes from a minute ago at this point probably six-eight weeks ago at the starter spring training Where hi kf said that nobody approached him after the world series game seven About the lead off of third and that whole deal. You remember that right where where he was criticized the blue jays were criticized
So spin it forward our our show has had over 800 player appearances We ask people we we get noticed sometimes we respectfully say okay when we did red sock spring training We got to his team and his people and we got a hard no So my question to you is when a guy is kind of calling out the media for not giving him a platform But then we try and ask him and maybe it wasn't the right timing what are we supposed to do as media members, right? So like I felt like Like my group got called out for not approaching someone and also like in today's world you know this you could get your story out in five minutes Via article you know via going on a show whatever so I don't know the guy well and I'm not calling him out I'm more just asking like on to defend the media side What are we supposed to do when someone says oh? Well, no one got my side of the story and then we ask and I think others to two and then you get a no Yeah, listen, you know, in today's world. I think you said it best if if you have a problem or you want to get a story out or you want to get your
Side of the story out It's not it's not that hard and then when someone approaches you to get it out and and make it that much easier and you still want to blame them I've got a problem with that. So to me um It just continues and and you know he wants to have problems with the media especially in Boston This ain't gonna fly brother this ain't gonna fly because you will get chewed up and spit out like gonna other and so to me The best thing for him to do is just shut up and produce right just shut up and produce and then Whenever you want to get something out then you have all the opportunity and all the media in the world in Boston to do that with Then do it but to me I KF man, you got to shut up and produce right now nobody cares about anything else buddy Well, I cared but he wouldn't come on and talk to us and we were like let's share the story
That's why I'm with you. You can't you can't play in both ways. That was my point I'm like if you're gonna cry. Oh no one's giving me the platform Then you're there and like you said now you're in Boston So if you want to get anything out at any point ever You're going to have an opportunity there are begging to talk to players and get access.
