Recession Coming? 3 Things I'd do as a Young Associate in 2023

About this episode

Layoffs are here.  Amazon, Blackrock, Goldman.  Law firms are not far behind as billing dries up.  Here are the three things I'd be doing if I were a young associate in 2023.

Why should you listen to me?
I graduated law school into the teeth of the Great Recession in 2008 and I've navigated this before from your position.

  1. Stockpile cash - Make sure you have at least 3 - 6 months liquid if you do get laid off
  2. Circle the Wagons.  Any client matter you work on should feel that YOU are their lawyer, not the firm.  This means getting to know clients on a personal level and going above and beyond for them.  This principal goes double for referral sources.
  3. Negotiate bonuses, not raises.  Raises make you a liability, bonuses tied to performance and business generation make you an asset.  Be an asset.
